WRs reportedly positive for marijuanaComment Email Print Share ESPN.com news services

Wide receivers Percy Harvin and Brandon Tate tested positive for marijuana during February's NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, two sources told FOXSports.com.

The news could be potentially damaging to the wide receivers' stock during this weekend's NFL draft.

Harvin was considered a first-round pick after leaving the University of Florida following his junior season. Tate was considered a possible second- to fourth-round pick after a solid college career at North Carolina.

Joel Segal, the agent who represents both players, didn't return messages from FOXSports.com seeking comment.

NFL teams received the drug-test results earlier this week, according to FOXSports.com.

Sources told FOXSports.com Harvin and Tate were the only two high-profile players to flunk their combine drug tests, and one of the sources said that fewer than a dozen players tested positive for recreational drugs.

Players who failed the tests are subject to entry into the NFL's substance-abuse program.

Harvin finished his college career with 133 receptions for 1,929 yards and 13 touchdowns and 194 carries for 1,852 yards and 19 scores. He averaged 9.5 yards per carry and 11.6 yards every time he touched the ball. He also posted a strong 4.39 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the combine.

He was at his best in big games, earning MVP honors in the 2006 Southeastern Conference championship game and totaling 171 yards and a touchdown in a victory over Oklahoma in the Bowl Championship Series national title game in January.

He lined up at receiver, running back and quarterback for the Gators but expects to do even more at the next level because several teams have already talked to him about returning kickoffs and punts.

Tate finished his career with an NCAA-record 3,523 career combined kick-return yards. Before tearing two knee ligaments midway through his senior year, he averaged 23.5 yards on his 16 receptions.

Tate, still recovering from his injury, didn't work out at the combine.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I think that Harvin was off our draft board, though we had serious interest in Tate.

We'll have to see if these rumors are true . . . .

This is probably one main reason that Robiskie is going to go higher than a lot of people think. Robiskie is among the "safe" picks in this WR class.

Why would someone with the skills and big play ability like Harvin be off our board  We probably wouldnt have a chance at #51 to get him but I dont know why he would be off our board

I like Percy Harvin as a player and I hope he can turn his life around... But I have a friend who is a policeman in the City where Percy went to HS. And he told me that Percy was arrested several times for Minor offenses.. Drinking in Public, Creating a public disturbance ect.. And The mayor called and told them to let him go because of his future star status.. So this kid has been protected since a early age... That being said Jerry does love a talented project..

He's off our draft board, so it appears.

Personally, I don't want to draft players with failed drug tests. I think the team needs to go another route.

Thankfully for us then you arnt calling the shots at VR.

He'll probably be suspended within 18 months...not to mention the fact that reportedly he is a coaching nightmare. When you are as talented as he is physically and the coaches and boosters are glad you leave early, something is wrong.

The problem with drafting Percy Harvin is that you never know when he's going to fail you when you need him most.

Sure, he may give you game breaking ability. But what if he fails a drug test going into the playoffs?

If he can't be trusted to stay clean when millions are on the line, why would anyone suspect he'll do it when he's in the NFL?

Besides, I don't think Harvin can thrive in a place like Dallas. He needs to go some place low key like Green Bay, Buffalo or Jacksonville.

I agree, he was smoking pot? I dont smoke it, but I hardly find it a crime. The chance to get this guy should not limit Dallas.

Ok...So it sounds like you would not take him at 51...I will give you that, but would you take him in a later round?

Cowboys scout said Dallas is going after Intelligent tough football players. Smoking a blunt right before combine testing pretty much eliminates him.

Percy Harvin reminds me of Peter Warrick. Off the field issues will slow down his on the field contributions. Plus I just don't see Harvin as a star. He can be a good player and I welcome good players. Every team needs as many good players as it can get. I just don't see star material. That was the same thing with Warrick.

I like Harvin a lot more than I liked Warrick, but thats a pretty solid comparison.

I'm not that down on him though, he's a burner with great wiggle. He's stout too, benching 405 for a guy his size. He may have character issues but if Harvin takes the DeSean Jacksonesque fall, you really think Jerry would pass on him at 51?

Harvin will drop, but I don't think he'll drop out of the second. Some front office will be too enticed by his talent.

My guess is that his contract will be laden with clauses regarding forfeiture of large sums of money if he tests positive in the future for any drugs.

They better sure about this. Unlike the false rumors reported on the following player who should sue the hell out those reporting false information, in doing so they could have caused harm in where they get drafted as well as hurting these players reputation as many people will continue to look at these players with doubt.

And so the truth continues to come out regarding the players who supposedly tested positive at the Scouting Combine.

Per a league source, none of the players who reportedly tested positive and then denied testing positive actually tested positive.

This means that Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis did not test positive for marijuana, and that USC linebackers Clay Matthews and Brian Cushing did not test positive for steroids.

And it could mean that Davis and Cushing and Matthews soon could be the new co-owners of NFLDraftBible.com, the site that reported that each of them tested positive.

and no

Its not a matter of it being illegal that makes teams not want to draft him.

Its a matter of poor decision making.

They know they are going to get tested and still cannot stay off the stuff long enough to pass the test.

They know the rules, know what is at stake and know the test is coming. If you're looking to draft guy who is dirty you either think he's a complete idiot or just doesn't care. Either way, why invest in someone like that?

They don't care if it is illegal. They care about making the smart decision for the franchise. Wasting a pick, time and money on a guy who just displayed some of the worst decision making that anyone could just isn't worth it to the team. If a player can't stay clean long enough to pass the test, odds are he won't be very clean after the test and in the future.

If I am making the pick, I wouldn't pick any player who tested positive.
