He is an upside guy to me. He is a guy who could be a bit feast or famine very early in his career of he gets major playing time. He is a football player though and he will grow. His ability to both play the run and be a playmaker in the back end is very intriguing.

I think he could be the favorite in a 3 man race to be that 3rd safety. Never count out vet experience with Blanton and the Cowboys really liked Frazier coming out. However unless Woods will win out unless he is undisciplined in camp and preseason.

Could be a high snap volume role, it was last year. Although they may use 4 CB's more now in subpackages

and the Cowboyzone hype continues....would love to see him do well, obviously, but he lasted into the 200's...noone in the league saw him as a starter, but this team and many in CZ see him as the next Woodson (he is missing those last two letters and they are IMPORTANT)...

....prove me wrong Woodsy, earn the respect of the ON and become the starter

Why be a Debby downer?

It's one thing to be skeptical of a player. It's another thing to feel the need in calling someone out on being excited about a player they liked before the draft.

I believe most people believe we got excellent value on Woods. He's far from a sure thing but he has a lot of traits that you look for In his position. Nobody will be surprised if he doesn't turn out but a lot of us are justifiable excited.

Just because a player is taken later in the draft does not mean anything. Front office make mistakes every single year.

As a fellow graduate from Louisiana Tech University I'm delighted that he is a Cowboy.

There are some aspects that I'm concern about with Woods. However, I like his upside and if the front four can provide a good pass rush and the secondary coach can guide Woods correctly I like his chances of succeeding with this team.

When I think "hype" I think highlights. The attached video shows both highlights and lowlights. He has a steep hill to climb, but he does have Playmaker traits that can be developed.

Meet Xavier Woods

The Dallas Cowboys engineered a trade (of next year's fifth) selected Xavier Woods with a 6th round (No. 191 overall) selection. Find out more about him below:

Height, Weight: 5’11 197 lbs

Rankings: CBSSports.com ranked Xavier Woods as the 156th overall prospect, and the seventh overall safety in the 2017 draft.

The skinny: After drafting two corners on day two of the NFL Draft, the Cowboys were still looking to add some help at safety to replace Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox, who they lost in free agency earlier this spring. Woods is a three-time First Team All-Conference USA selection, and was a major player for Louisiana Tech since the beginning of his rookie season.

What Cowboys are getting: Woods’ college coaches are on-record as being enthralled with his work ethic, intensity and leadership skills. In those regards, he definitely fits Jerry Jones’ wants in the “War Daddy” department.

But Woods also has a tremendous amount of high-level physical measureables, and was extremely productive at the safety position throughout his career. Woods runs a 4.54 40-yard dash, has a 33.5-inch vertical leap, a 10’2 broad jump, ran the shuttle in 4.13, and the three-cone drill in 6.72 seconds. So the Measurables are there.

As far as production goes, in four years at Louisiana Tech, Woods notched 272 total tackles, and 20.5 tackles for loss. He also had four career sacks (three in his senior season), has five career forced fumbles, and had 14 career interceptions to his name. That’s some pretty major production too.

Woods has great ball skills, can track the ball well in the air, and has good instincts in coverage. He can also dish out a lot of punishment in run support, as well as on receivers coming across the middle. He is drawn to ball carriers, and can really rack up the tackle numbers at a high rate.

As a safety, Woods is a little bit on the smaller size, and tends to be a better hitter than a tackler overall. He needs to find a way to improve his speed between the boundaries, and also can be a bit slow to change direction. Finally, he tends to focus on the quarterbacks eyes a little too much at times, so he can be fooled if a quarterback looks off his receiver down the field.

Brian Broaddus, Jeff Cavanaugh, Kevin Turner and the rest of our favorite guys at 105.3 The Fan are all big fans of Xavier’s skill set. ... and thought of him as third-round-worthy. So it's a "steal'' on paper. They do their homework, so Cowboys Nation should be pretty excited as well.

Grades: CBSSports.com gives Dallas an A for their sixth round selection of Woods.

Galatzan’s Take: Dallas continues to make excellent picks with the selection of Woods here. As I stated before, they desperately needed to find a viable replacement for J.J. Wilcox, and Woods has the Ball Skills, talent and production to be exactly that. He will be a ball hawk, and solid run game defender for the Cowboys, and Dallas fans should be extremely excited that Woods fell into their laps here.

Overall Grade: A

Certainly should be considered a solid prospect -- not a project or a developmental reach.

I think Heath has earned the right to start. That being said, if Woods out-plays Heath, then yes, he should start. Heath is a lot better than most on here give him credit. He'll show this year that he belongs on the field. He's got speed and a nose for the ball.

I think Woods is going to be really good down the road. But there will be growing pains. Heath is finally coming in to his own and the Cowboys patience with him over the years is about to pay off.....

There are always Brady's and Romo's to be found in later rounds or UDFA's. Even Brady just admitted he's a product of the system they run in NE. The Cowboys obviously feel Woods in right for OUR system. He is a 6th rounder with a lot of upside. Hell, everyone thought Claiborne was the next Deion. We'll see how he does as a NYJ. Now that was hype.....

I'd be inclined to start Heath early in the season, mainly due to his experience and much-improved play in recent years. That doesn't necessarily mean Heath's performance is a certainty to remain preferable to Woods' performance over time, however. It'll be a competition that should attract a lot of long term attention to see which one qualifies as the favorite to live up to the team's hopes and expectations. May the best man win.

as a UTEP fan, watching these Xavier Woods highlights, he reminds me of Quintin Demps (SS-CHI); 4thRD pick (117) in 2008.

Demps has spent his career alternating between being a starter to a backup. He's talented enough to hang around for 10yrs and gives teams good depth.

Even at 30, he had a solid season at HOU last year w/ 6INTs (Dallas had 9). He's always been a ballhawk.

Xavier Woods appears to be a more athletic Quintin Demps. If all he can provide for Dallas is equally solid depth w/ the ability to start, he could be a heck of a steal

It will be interesting keeping tabs on Mo'
This year, BTW, which one of our guys rolled over to the Ravens? (Not going out of my way to watch either of them though)
