Ya like stats? This harkens back to the good ole days

Yes, that's the other side of the coin.

No, we aren't going over this again, offensive TOP per drive is the smart way of telling the offenses ability to keep the defense off the field, total TOP for both offense and defense tells you absolutely nothing. But you've already been told this so no reason to rehash that topic.
I don’t agree with your conclusion that Total TOP means absolutely nothing.

I’ll let others decide for themselves.

Too much emphasis being placed on the offense. We should be looking at how KC has 26 return TDs (def/ST) and we have 6 since 2015. 20 more freaking touchdowns!?!?

I wanted to pass more because I believed it would lead to more points being scored. I put the number at 30 ppg. Achieveing this number would make this team hard to beat and favorites, not just contenders.

But the offense has been inconsistent. Putting up points against lesser competition and sometimes not showing up against other contenders. If the offense scores at 30 ppg against the remaining contending teams that are left on the schedule, Dallas could still attain the goals that most had at the start of the year.
there has to be some balance or you have to be so good and so loaded at WR and TE that its pick your poison for the other team...despite our WR crew, we are not that...we are not patriots...

They were right.

We are passing more and have improved in damn every meaningful offensive statistical category, and elite in some too.

If you didn't want to pass more it seems like you were wrong. Hmmm
I think we need balance.....given we are 6-6, #1 passing offense doesn't necessarily translate to wins....just looking at the top 5 teams, they are all pretty bad......

I don't care about where we rank passing but how many wins and what does it lead to.....and collecting stats against Miami's of the world is meaningless when we struggle mightily against decent teams...

Back in the day, you didn't need to know the record of the team to know where they were in the standings, just look at the passing yards.

The top 4 passers, in yards, in the NFL are DAL 6-6, TB 5-7, LAC 4-8 and LAR 7-5. That's an impressive 22-26. 1 team with a winning record.

In case you're interested, the top 4 run teams are BAL 10-2, SF 10-2, SEA 10-2 and IND 6-6. 36-12.

That's a cause and effect statistic. Teams that win run more because they have a lead more. Teams that pass a lot are behind and have to pass. Look at yards per rush and Dallas is tied for 7th (believe it or not). Ahead of them are the Ravens(1), Cardinals(2), Panthers(2), Browns(4), Texans(4), Titans(6). Who do you think are the top teams in rushing attempts? Baltimore, SF, Seattle, Indianapolis, Buffalo and Minnesota.

Being able to run the football is a good thing and teams that want to win need to be able to run in certain situations. But stats can be misleading.

At the same time, it cannot be denied that the Cowboys are struggling running the football at times. Against the Vikings the run game was pathetic. Against Detroit, a team with a poor defense, they ran 24 times for 75 yards. They ran better against Buffalo but went away from the run to soon, characteristic of the Garrett era. Against the Patriots the running game was okay but in that weather they should have run it more. I think they lost confidence in the running game, especially after failing to get a 1st down against the Vikings late in the game.

2016 time of possesion; 3rd in the league

2019 time of posession 19th in the league

Every year since 2016 averaging lower and lower and our Win to Losses getting worse. Maybe there is something to having a dominating rushing game

Wins to loses may be a meaningful category too

Good thing we gave 12 carries on Thanksgiving to the guy that averaged 6 yards a pop:facepalm:

They weren't scoring before he went out either, because they can't throw the ball with any consistency

He's probably a bandaid until they can get another franchise QB. JB has shown some flashes but yeah youre right hes real inconsistent. He also relies heavily on TY whos been in and out of the lineup.

Yea. I don't think we know what JB can be because they don't have many weapons in the passing game, and they're pretty conservative by design. Another playmaker to open things up and maybe the offense changes.

He's probably a good game manager who needs things right around him to win consistently. Not sure if that's what the Colts want to invest in, but I think they have the same reservations. Who knows if they think he's a bandaid, but he makes sense if they draft....say Tua or Love and want to wait a year for them.

I really don't care.
I’d be interested though in how you evaluate and what the effects with us being #3 in 2016 with Total TOP versus #19 this year thus far as revealed in an above post.

I’m curious how your TOP per drive measures up this year to Total TOP in comparison from 2016 to 2019? Is there as much contrast as with Total TOP.

And that’s basically how stats should be evaluated as a mechanism to what led to victory or defeat. Without associating them to the success of the team they hold little meaning except to those playing Fantasy or voting on All Stars.

Generally though we associate great QB with the success of the team. Unlike how we evaluate all positions. There’s some exceptions of course.

For example we might hold Elliott in high esteem if he leads the league in rushing on a losing or non playoff team but not a QB who led the league in passing yards.

Interceptions by the defense - Dallas is dead last
Net punting - Dallas is dead last
Average starting field position for their offense - Dallas is dead last

And how could I forget, we've missed more field goals than any other team.

We're perfect on extra points, so I guess there's that.

More stats:

Offensive yards per drive - Dallas is 2nd (BAL is first)
Offensive points per drive - Dallas is 4th (BAL, KC, MIN)

Interceptions by the defense - Dallas is dead last
Net punting - Dallas is dead last
Average starting field position for their offense - Dallas is dead last

The Cowboys have to drive further than any other team in the NFL in order to score, yet see the offensive numbers in spite of it. This team is killing itself with poor special teams and the inability to intercept the other team's passer.
Thank you posting those stats, there are three phases to a football team. Most fans simply don’t look deep enough to determine why the team is failing. That being said, coaching is a major culprit in this teams failures.

Baltimore is a passing team. The other 3 offenses are terrible.
Baltimore is a passing team? 339 pass attempts and they rank 25th in yardage and 31st in attempts. 445 rush attempts, 1st and 1st in yardage. They're a 78% run team.

By contrast, the Cowboys are 8th in yards and are a 42% run team. They were 43% run in 2018. The perception that Moore has changed the team into a passing team is incorrect. The team is not as effective running the ball this year. The blocking and the running are not as effective.

Everything the Ravens do is RPO. Their whole run game is designed around making defenses dedicate players to stop the pass and exploiting mismatches. You can't do that without the threat of throwing the ball.

What? They are a passing team because teams load up to stop the run. It's part of why the Cowboys have more passing yards than anyone else.

In today's game, it's stupid to be one or the other anyways. It's literally line up and run a play based on what the defense does. Jason Garrett is incapable of doing that and has put the reins on Moore to do that, exclusively. Once the Cowboys offense tries to stop forcing the run, they will be very, very good.

You and I both know we loaded up our stat sheets on crap defenses.
Up until two weeks ago,our schedule vs weak pass defenses may have been the easiest by any team in a decade. It was unbelievably flukey
.
But, as stats usually go, things tend to balance out.
We finally played two pass defenses in the top 10 the last two weeks.
Didn't go well...at all.

We get two more that are more in the the 10-15 range in the Bears and Rams.
Then its back to NFC East teams.

but last year everyone complained we run too much and we should be passing passing passing. hmmmm
And "everyone" was correct.

The NFL has been a passing league since early 2000's & is never going back to the way it was. The passing game is king and will be from now until the end of time, and teams built with an outdated run-first approach in mind will always be playing catch-up.

Ring a bell in who that would be? Here's a hint.
