With player safety at the top of the list of concerns, the Competition Committee has proposed a rule change to where the officials will blow the whistle once a player loses his helmet to avoid injury. Of course, Jason Witten ran for another 25 yards or so after being popped in Philadelphia a couple of years ago, which remains his signature play.

The vote by the league's owners could come Tuesday.

I understand the rule, but imagine it's fourth down and a player's helmet pops off after a hit 10 yards down the field but he remained upright and could have picked up a few more yards for a first down.

I agree. This rule could really screw over a lot of teams. If anything they should go back and look at improving the helmets instead of putting in a rule like this.

Let's just take off their pads and put flags around their waists and be done with it.

..........or a touchdown. I seriously do not think there is a player in the league that'll try and take a guys head off of if he's running helmetless. The NFL is more class than that.

Of course, because this doesn't normally happen. But if a helmet does come off, (oh, by the way, the helmet is not worn to show off a logo, it is worn to provide protection to a player's HEAD), I think the play should stop then. Just like forward motion. Witten's play was great, but if he suffered head trama, then everyone would have been asking why he didn't just run out of bounds or fall down. The league should look into ways to keep the helmet on, but they definitely want to be have a course of action if the helmet does come off. And for everyone who says it hasn't happened yet....all it takes is one instance for it to be drastic. It's like saying because you've never been in an accident, you don't need to wear a seatbelt. But all it takes is on reckless person to do some very serious damage.

This isn't some kind of "don't touch Tom Brady below the waist" kind of rule. This is to prevent something that hasn't happened, and now will hopefully NOT happen. If some of you guys had a true understanding of safety in the workplace, you wouldn't be against this. You would be asking why hasn't someone thought of this earlier.

Blow the play dead if there cleat falls off in the middle of a play as well. We don't want anybodies little toes to get stepped on either.

Matter of fact, blow the play dead if anybody falls down, we wouldn't want a finger to get stepped on mid play either.

Actually, blow the play dead if somebody is about to get tackled. Studies have uncovered recently that it hurts to get tackled sometimes, so let's just play that safe as well.

Sure, that's a totally realistic scenario.

Go ahead and show everyone what a big man you are. Go out there, let Demarcus Ware run at you full steam, and hit you while you AREN'T wearing any pads.

They have pads AND HELMETS to protect them. Now if they lose that protection they are supposed to just "take" the hit? I'm sure if you were a real player, and somehow lost your shoulder pads, you wouldn't be yelling at a 250lb linebacker to hit you.

Fans will ***** at anything just to *****.

thats a very good scenario, i bet if that happens in about 7 games or so all over the NFL, fans will be screaming, because if you see a player running towards the endzone, all you have to do is rip off a players helmet

So rather than address the real issue, which is helmet fitment standards as well as 4-point straps versus the NFL's "at least 1 on each side" rules, we're going to just throw it out altogether?

First of all the Witten play should've been an additional 15-yard penalty because his helmet was ripped off. Other than that, it's circumstantial, especially if a player has ALL of his straps buckled. Witten bloodied his nose on that play - helmet ripped off. Other guys are running around trying to look cool.

NFL baffles me sometimes.

probably the part where Allen just rips off Flo's helmet. I don't think Allen is going to be like, "ohh, there goes Felix for the game winning td, better rip some guy's helmet off."

See, I agree 100%. When I played, we kept our helmet buckled up, all four straps, ALL GAME LONG. Players now just snap and unsnap the straps all game long.

BUT, if a helmet does come off, I think the player's safety should be the first priority, not how many yards he could have picked up.

players are well compensated for the risks they take and havent complained about this, they are trying to prevent cheap shots at the end of the half by having the penelty enforced the next half when this has been a rare thing but now they are going to write in a rule that could prevent a team from a touchdown for something that is just as rare.

what if the safety has an angle on a runner and knows he is the last line but takes on a blocker thats out in front and at impact on the way down rips off his own helmet to prevent the ball being advanced farther? there are so many possibilities with this it is ridiculous
