Gene Roddenberry produced two pilots. NBC disliked
The Cage, which was presented to the network as a black-and-white print but was also filmed in color. The second pilot,
Where No Man Has Gone Before, appealed to the network but was officially released as the third episode of the series' first season. It was filmed in both black-and-white and color print also.
The colorized version of
WNMHGB was released in both early re-runs and syndication of the series. Colorized portions of of the
TC was incorporated into the first season's two-part
The Menagerie episode.
Oldtimers like me remember
The Menagerie visual defense in Mr. Spock's court-martial showing Captain Pike's ship and crew, beginning as a black-and-white presentation on the court room monitor, then morphing seamlessly into a colorized presentation. Those scenes were derived from
TC episode that did not get past the NBC cut.
The entire black-and-white episode version of
TC did get limited replay, especially in the early days of the series syndication, before it was permanently replaced by its colorized version. I could not locate a black-and-white video of
WNMHGB anywhere but did find this still photo taken from the episode:
The shot is taken from a scene, where Kirk was apologizing to Gary before attempting to bash Gary in the head with a rock, in order to save everyone from Gary's superhuman power rampage.
