Ok, so this http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf...nded-for-national-championship-004321519.html is what brought on this post.

I'm just curious how many out there really think athletes should be tested/suspended/punished for using marijuana. It is FAR from performance enhancing, in fact some would say it's the opposite. I say if a player is killing it on the field and is a stoner, they should(if anything) be rewarded, not punished. And I don't wanna hear "it's illegal" cuz its getting to where it may eventually be legal nation wide. Then what?

Thoughts?

Not a weed smoker, only tried it once as a kid but I find it so ridiculous that the NFL wastes its time cracking down on weed as well as the government. Make it legal, nothing wrong with smoking weed. In sports it doesn't enhance the play so why do they really care. In the real world it can stimulate the economy.

Used to smoke pot when I was in the Marines.

Somewhat comparative in that its harmless to do it in regards to you being able to do your job but its incredibly given the consequences if you are caught

Basically think it should be treated like alcohol.

if you show up to practice or a game stoned you should be disciplined as one would if they showed up intoxicated from alcohol.

As far as it affecting performance. Phelps broke Olympic record for gold medals as a swimmer and was found that he smoked marijuana so how bad could it be physically pertaining to hindering an athlete.

Though don't know if he was a regular smoker.

The problem is that it stays in your system so long. You could smoke this weekend and test positive in two weeks!

Enforcing it is a complete waste of time in sports or in terms of legality. Why do we waste taxpayer money arresting people for it?

As someone stated above, obviously a team should be able to discipline a player that shows up to practice or a game stoned just like they would if a player showed up drunk, but otherwise it should be a non-issue.

I don't smoke it but I do not care if people use it or not.....to each his own. Heck, my friend just told me about this thing called a 'jelly-bean" and it sounds delicious! I might have to try one on a rainy day

I think anyone that can't wait an extra week or so to smoke a doobie and, as a consequnce, misses the biggest moment of his young life - which could easily have been the biggest moment of his entire life - is a bleeping moron.

It's legal in Colorado and Washington, and will be nationwide soon enough, what then?
It actually kinda isn't legal anywhere in this country right now. Recreational marijuana use violates federal law and federal law supersedes state law. The reason why it is "legal" in those 2 states is the federal government announced they wouldn't bother enforcing this particular federal law so really without any federal enforcement, individual states can do whatever they want.

Regardless if it is legal in any state the bigger issue is it is against the rules. If any sports league state their players cannot use it then it is on the players to not use it. There is a time a place to protest and contest the rules. During the season is not that time.

Many places use HAIR to drug test, and will look at the last three MONTHS (they could go even further back in time depending on length of hair but stop at three months) to determine drug use, including marijuana.

Regarding OP, it's a tragedy this kid can't play in the game. SMH.

I look forward to the time when it is legal across the entire U.S.. I've tried it before and it did nothing for me. I probably won't try it again even if/when it becomes legal, but I know several people that would enjoy it.

I don't think it has a direct impact as a performance enhancing drug; however, I do believe it can possibly have an indirect effect for athletes. It can help them to relax, which can be beneficial to an athlete and others in life. The ability to calm down or come down from highly stressful situations is good for a person. Every now and then a drug can be a useful tool to help a person relax a little easier.

If the federal government were to make it legal does not mean the NFL or any other league will change their position.

It is no guarantee. They may still have some sort of policy in place just to cover any potential liability. If a player gets severely injured during a game or practice and was found to be high at the time the league will want some sort of policy in place that protects them.
