Stephen Jones has been groomed by Jerry as his successor when he eventually gives up control. That's wife Stephen has such a big role in negotiating contracts, handling things at the new stadium while it was under construction, etc. Also, Stephen has been quoted (heard the interview myself but don't recall who did the interview) that he would hire a GM to really run the Cowboys.

Will he hire a GM to work with him or will it be more of a "consultant"?

Will he have final say like daddy?

My bet is he hires someone but keeps final say on most if not all things concerning the Cowboys roster, trades, etc. and will have the official title of GM.

Sadly it will probably be like AL Davis the other day with a drool towel on his lap.

I have faith in Stephen. He doesn't seem to be the attention-seeker his father is. Jerry was a 47-year old "oilman" when he bought the team. Stephen was only 25, so in my mind, he grew up in the Dallas Cowboys business.

Everytime we hear about Stephen it's because he is trying to calm down his father or talk Jerry out of one of his ideas. Stephen has been credited with some clever salary-cap manuevering as well.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Stephen hired one of the 1990 era Cowboys (Aikman, Novacek, Irvin, Darren Woodson) to be the GM or assistant GM.

Out of that list, something tells me that Novacek or Woodson would make the best GM.

I wouldn't mind seeing Darren Woodson as a head coach either.

Hopefully Stephen takes the approach like Jim Irsay did when he took over for his dad and hire a accomplished respected GM like Bill Polian to run the team and stay out of the way.

Best post of the day, and i mean that!!!!!!!!

Irsay was hired by his dad right out of college like Stephen. Difference is Irsay's dad was a drunken ******, but still, the similarities are there.

Jim is quietly one of the better owners in the NFL!

I live in Indy and have met Jim a couple of times. One time when I worked at Blockbuster and he came in and rented a video. He is a very nice man, unlike his dad.

Look at Al Davis. Same mold. Jerry won't give up control until the day he dies. It's nice to think that Stephen will take over one day soon but it will be 15-20 years. Jerry is healthy and the buck will always stop with him. Period.

Future phone call...Ringg Rinngg

Stephen: "Hey Dad."

Jerry: "Here's what we need to do. I say we call a press conference and you announce that I have come out of retirement and then we make a trade for [insert primadonna name here]."

Stephen: " Okay Dad, we talked about this. This isn't healthy."

Jerry: " Look I already have it all worked out. I just got off the phone with Al Davis and he is willing to trade us Herschel Walker Junior."

Stephen: " Dad, Mr. Davis passed away, several years ago. Remember? The Raiders are good again? "

Jerry: " Wait, what? No..I ....I.... uh oh, I'm cold."

Stephen: " Dad, did you...?? again.."

I agree.

I am sure he loves his father.
I am sure he admires his fathers GREAT success.

BUT I am also sure he knows that, as the Great Michael Corleone told Kay,

Michael: I'm working for my father now. He's been sick, very sick.
Kay: But you're not like him, Michael. I thought you weren't going to become a man like your father. That's what you told me.
Michael: My father's no different than any other powerful man – any man who's responsible for other people, like a senator or a president.
Kay: [laughs] You know how naïve you sound?
Michael: Why?
Kay: Senators and presidents don't have men killed.
Michael: Oh, who's being naïve, Kay? Kay, my father's way of doing things is over, it's finished. Even he knows that. I mean, in five years, the Cowboys Organization is going to be completely legitimate. Trust me. That's all I can tell you about how I am going to run this Cowboys business.

Absolutely! You've heard everyone here. He will be so much better than Jerry. You've heard everyone declare their undying allegiance.

That is... until some player pulls a hamstring. Then they'll curse the incompetent training staff and doctors of this team, swear that the player will never be the same because when they were playing in the over 50 city league they also pulled a hamstring and KNOW how deadly those can be. And yet somehow the idiot Cowboy coaches and trainers act like its no big deal and that the player will in fact recover.

At that point, they will have no choice, no choice at all, but to call for Stephen's head. They gave him time to prove otherwise, but obviously Stephen is just like his old man.

Yup, Stephen Jones. That's the ticket.

I imagine that he'll probably hire a GM, but as much as he's been involved in the organization, I think he'll reserve the ultimate decission making for himself, at least on the larger issues.

I think he's as much as said that he'd hire a GM.
He said this year's ago when he was very much in the shadows and still learning the ropes. I can swear he something a little different in the last couple of years as he has got more and more involved as Jerry Jones has been distracted with the stadium.

I think he'll end up wielding the final say in the role of owner and GM, just as Jones does. He just might end up being a little less visable. Like most other GMs. He certainly won't be making appearances in Jay Leno like his father. He doesn't appear to have the burning desire to be the center of attention.

He's also parrotted a lot of what he has said in recent years.

Everyone loves the backup QB until they see him in action.

I don't know enough about his football acumen to make a sound judgment. About all I can say is that he got us out of a financial mess in the late nineties, is excellent at handling negotiations and contracts and apparently engineered Owens' path out of town.
