With what looks to be an improved defense, what’s your best “guesstimate” for ppg we’ll need to score to be a legit playoff contender?

I must say, I’ve never gone into a Cowboys season with so much uncertainty of what this team is or will be. None of us have any idea, really.

If I’m being a complete fan optimist, this young team is talented and capable of being a real force in this league. This collection of talented, athletic defenders could develop into an agressive bunch, capable of imposing their will and holding opponents to less than 20 a game. Offense? With my fan glasses on, it’s capable of controlling the clock on efficient drives and winning games 24-20.

If I’m being a complete pragmatist with no “fan glasses” on, this team looks mediocre. Talented in several areas but talent that hasn’t been forged into a team. Talent alone does not win in the NFL, especially in the playoffs. With the fan glasses off, my biggest concern frankly is not about the players. It is the culture of this team that has been made at the top that is responsible for the last 22 years. It’s that culture that winks at mediocrity and excuses failure that has crippled this team in the long run.

Will they finally break through? I don’t know, but it’s going to take more than talent.

Think theres 5-6 teams that could hang 30 on our d. That's not counting the giants because that offense has been trash for 2 years. If it comes around itll be bad.

I say the defense scores more points than the offense this season. And we win the SB.

A whole new way of doing it.

Our offense was garbage last year and we scored 22.1 PPG, 28.3 before Zeke’s suspension & Tyron’s injury. Let’s go conservative and say we’ll only score 25 PPG.

Our defense was also pretty bad most the year and gave up 20.8 PPG. Difference is, I think we’re going to have a top 10 defense, maybe even top 5. And if so, that’ll put us in the 18 PPG range, which is an average margin of victory of 7 PPG. That would have been top 5 last year.

So, to answer your question, I think we need to score around 19+ PPG to be a playoff team.

Read all offseason the defense will carry the team and be top 5, so offense should be able to produce like 2015 and be good. Let’s go defense.

To beat most teams, 24 should do it.

To beat really good teams, it'll take 28.
That is why we have been horrible in elimination games. Offense is typically trash and can’t score.

I wouldn't say that is going conservative.

I like an offense that scores points and isn't limited by the number of points that our defense surrenders. We face some damned good offenses and it looks like the Giants may have straightened out their woes. I'm going with 27. If our defense can limit points scored and our offence can score points we're gonna win some ball games and make it to the dance. That's all I ask for. I have more faith in our offense than some though

12. All points courtesy of Realtime Maher. He's just that good.

Points per game isn’t always a good measurement of a defense.

The Arizona preseason game is a great example with 8 Cowboy turnovers which led to most of their points.

But if your just looking for a per game average of points then I’d say 20 in this era.

Landry stated to Lilly” Bob, if we can hold them to 17 points we’ll win 90% of our games”.

do we have a team that can put up those numbers.
If the D can give us some short fields to work with I think the O can do it. We've just passed the era of offense carrying the team and I think the coin may turn over. If we can field a mistake free O with a dominate D we may go to an NFCCG for once.
