- sucks to see Phillips go down. Forget about the ‘pushing Bennett’ stuff…he was simply a better TE than Bennett. That’s why he got all the playing time at the end of last season. Unique blocker too because he can pretty much block from the F-Back, TE, and H-Back spots. I would probably categorize him as a guy that reminds me a lot of Moose Johnston as a blocker, but obviously he’s at the TE spot. He’s that good. And he showed solid receiving ability. Would’ve given defenses a very tough time out there.

- I’m not convinced that McBriar’s placeholding is any good whatsoever since he’s stunk at it the entire time he’s been here. I don’t think kickers miss that wide unless they slip or the hold is bad.

- McGee started out well, struggled and then finished decent enough. He’s got the ability, but the game and the blitzing moves too fast for him right now. I’ve seen good QB’s look a lot worse than McGee at this stage (Aaron Rodgers, Romo, Pennington, etc). But, to me the #1 thing I look at in a QB is their pocket presence and their ability to feel the pressure, but look downfield and anticipate the receivers. Those QB’s I mentioned struggled with that as well at the stage McGee is at, but sometimes QB’s never develop that skill.

- Tepper looked pretty good blocking when I focused on him, but his shotgun snaps were horrible. Almost reminded me of playing Madden where you get screwed on a poor shotgun snap and almost always get sacked.

- Sicko moves very well and has good hands.

- Cricket’s not going anywhere unless he gets injured. He was on the first team special teams kickoff coverage. Until somebody at Fullback or LB can outperform him there, he’ll find his way on the roster.

- Free looked really really smooth out there and very well coached. I know it’s the first preseason game, but that’s straight up one-on-one stuff with Antwan Odom and he dominated him.

- I’m very happy with Roy’s play. He made a good catch in between the numbers and that was something he usually drops. I think he knows that is the scouting report against him. He also got open nicely against a good CB in the red zone, but Romo had to rush his throw.

- Not worried about the red zone. Felix was close to getting a TD, but fumbled. And it’s not like we are running our regular season running plays out there.

- The DB’s looked good and well coached last night. Good job by Dave Campo.

- I’d be surprised if McQuistan stays on the team. Geno Adkins pimp slapped him all game long.

- I’m a believer in Brandon Williams and the INT had nothing to do with it. He just looked impressive when he was out there. Victor Butler played a nice game as well.

- Joe DeCamillis is going to work over the Special Teams this week. The Shipley punt return was bad coverage and there were a couple of other times where guys were not filling their lanes.

- Overall I’m happy with the performance. Not a lot of penalties for Dallas in the first preseason game. Tackled rather well. Backups looked very well coached and getting that first win out of the way is nice. And if I wanted to look at the silver lining, I could say that it’s good to have Beuhler struggle now because if he struggles next week, we’ll know that he’s not the solution at placekicker. Still bummed that Phillips got hurt, but hopefully we’ll make the best out of it.

Calling all tape gurus. Please concoct a tape of all of David Buehler's field goals from the HoF game.

I would like to inspect the "holding" on the part of McBriar. Was he in fact to blame for the poor kicking?

Hi, I'm looking for Ray Finkle....and a clean pair of shorts.

We won't be running any goal line draws this year? News to me.

With respect to McGee, I think he did pretty well given that he hasn't had much/any real game experience the last couple of years.

As we should all expect, he isn't seeing the field quickly enough and not setting his feet all the time and his mechanics are inconsistent. But as he gains more experience, those flaws should start to smooth over.

He did take care of the football, which is a big plus. And he did make several good throws. He just needs more game experience and work on mechanics.

He seems like the type of guy who takes his profession seriously. I expect him to continue to improve.

I am not a UT homer but I really think we missed on this guy Shiipley.I have seen him play and he is one of those guys that should have been drafted higher.Dallas toyed with drafting him and I wish they had.He is plain and simple a football player. He may not time out but he's quick.

We took Dez in the first and Sean Lee in the second. We didn't draft again till AOA in the fourth. He was drafted in the third round. When exactly where we supposed to draft him?

We are pretty loaded at WR. Granted the kid looks good, I just don't think the Cowboys actually had a chance to get him. If we were to go back and do it again, I draft Dez, Lee, and AOA all over again vs drafting Shipley.

David Buehler 'a little upset with myself'

By Tim MacMahon

CANTON, Ohio – David Buehler wasn’t pleased with his preseason debut as the Cowboys’ placekicker.

Buehler made field goals from 20, 23 and 34 yards. But he was mad that he missed a 49-yard attempt, hooking the kick way wide left.

“I was just a little too quick getting there,” Buehler said. “I’m a little upset with myself. I’ve got to make those. I’ve got to make any one they put me out to kick. I expect to make them all.”

I wish I had gotten to see Brandon Williams play. I got to see a bit of the game, but wasn't focusing on him.

Good stuff there.

Brandon Williams was a better player in the Big 12 than Brian Orakpo. I will gladly repeat this every thread by the way:)

He is going to be a really, really good player.

I will disagree about Bennett versus Phillips. Bennett is a top 10 blocking TE in football. His underachievement as a receiver and his attention-whoring make him far less likable but he is a better player overall.

Phillips was insurance for another Bennett injury or self-destruction but outside that he wasn't taking his spot.

The guy who benefits most is probably Deon Anderson. Phillips is a far better and more valuable player. Gronkowski versus Cricket would be a tough call because Cricket is a very experienced ST guy but costs more and has less upside.

A lot of us wanted Shipley. But some on here just think he is a slow white guy.

But getting Dez really ended the whole Shipley to Dallas talk.

Why exactly was Orakpo drafted 13th overall and Williams drafted 120th over? :muttley:

Bennett is a great pass protector and a good run blocker. Phillips is an excellent run blocker and a good pass protector. I don't really care for Bennett's attitude, mainly because I think you need to earn that type of attention and I don't think he's mentally as tough as I would like him to be. But, I don't hate Bennett...I just think he's not as good as Phillips and last year at the end of the year they were playing Phillips more than Bennett. Hopefully Phillips will comeback fine from this injury, but I think people are selling his potential and ability as a TE in this league woefully short.

Placeholding is more than just having the laces out. It's about the placement of the football in a certain spot, the tilt of the hold, etc. So I don't see any of us being able to tape it and see it. Beuhler did blame himself, but most kickers do that these days. I have no idea if the hold was bad or not, but McBriar's past holding problems have me thinking otherwise.

I liked Shipley as well, but the punt coverage on that return was lousy. Good returners make teams pay for lousy coverage. Great returners make teams pay, period. Cricket may be more expensive, but he's staying on the team unless he does something stupid or gets injured. Plus, it's not a cap year.

Say what? The only time Phillips got more than a handful of snaps was when Bennett missed two games with a concussion. Bennett was on the field for more than half of the snaps when he was healthy.

Orakpo projects to a better NFL player based on measurables and body type. And he will be very good. It's unfortunate for him that he was picked by such a pathetic franchise.

But that Orakpo projects to a being a much better NFL player does not foreclose the possibility that Brandon Williams was a more effective college player, which is what the claim was, I think. (I don't know if that is true or not, I'm just pointing out that there is not an inconsistency).

There are most successful college players who fall all the time to late rounds as measureable guys get drafted. That's why Toby Gerhart was not the #1 RB taken. And why Jimmy Clausen was taken before Colt McCoy. And why Thomas was picked rounds before Jordan Shipley. And why Tyson Alualu was drafted 10th over about a dozen more productive DTs in college.

So, without addressing whether B. Williams was or was not a better college player, I will just note that pointing to their draft position does not refute such a contention.

He couldn't even crack the top 9 WRs on the Cowboys. Holley, Hudgins, and Manuel Johnson are all better. You do realize the Cowboys also have Roy, Miles, Dez, Ogletree, Crayton, Hurd.

So, tell me again, why should the Cowboys have drafted Shipley?:)
