Zac Martin

The argument is useless without mentioning the actual salary cap figures.

The $$ is purely in relation to your cap and market value.

And yes, we have plenty for him.

Paying him is a no brainer, it does suck that he’s made it clear he’s setting the market and “letting his agent handle everything”.

I wouldn’t be surprised if things got mildly contentious.

Finally get a good draft. Second contract comes. Too expensive. Go back to draft hoping for some more luck.

No.

Pay the player.

You NEVER let all-pro players in their prime leave. This team should have absolutely no salary cap problems. They paid for the past spending now with years of much stricter frugality (despite a couple of overpays in hindsight in Dez and Crawford although those are still 2 good players), and now Romo will be off the books in another year. Our starting QB is on a rookie contract. We have signed very few free agents for a couple of years. All this talk about having trouble signing Lawrence, Irving, Hitchens, and Martin is silly IMO. Transition or Franchise for a year or two if you have to (Lawrence makes sense, because he has had PED suspension and injury issues in past, and only 1 monster year of production - although I like him). They can give solid signing bonuses, and smaller early year salaries, and stretch out contract - no problems.

This team can't afford to lose consistent, pro-bowl players that don't have trouble off the field........This guys should be dominant for years yet - why would we ever give that up for the unknown?

I agree in principle, but you cant over pay for anyone, including an ALL PRO. The trick is knowing when too much is too much. Its an inexact science.

Everyone screamed PAY THE MAN when Dez' contract was being negotiated. Dez cost us Murray (a better, more reliable, more mentally stable player) and Leary who is a hell of a lot better player. There are always trade offs even if they are not immediate.

Then transition tag or franchise tag him until you can negotiate a better deal. Not injury prone, consistent high level, no off-field issues, smart - umm I would take a chance on that. Guys they have overpaid have had mental or injury worries......or we had to get them from outside the organization. If his cost is market cost - then you pay it.

No guard before Martin in NFL history...not John Hanna, not Larry Allen has been named All-Pro in his first three years. He is young, in his prime and never misses a game. He has a very aggressive agent in Tom Condon otherwise they would have wrapped up a new deal in the pre-season. You have to pay the man.

Martin is not getting anywhere near $20M. He will get the highest salary at his position nothing more.

Sometimes you have to overpay - or your left with the Paeas, Thompsons, Carrolls, etc of the world.
