LOL.

Geezus, doesn't it get old constantly slurping at the nibblets of the Jones'?

His new deal was for $36,850,000. It doesn't strike you as odd that the "change" on the new millions given to him is exactly the same amount as the fine? That contract number is precisely what it is because the Cowboys agreed to cover the fine.
If you were willing to work with him, why not do it immediately so that the $850K isn't just given away?

I mean regardless of who pays, it's no longer in either pocket right?

Now that it's in salary, it counts against your cap, right?

Seems avoidable all around.

Keep in mind starting C Tyler Biadasz is a free agent next season and will be looking for a nice payday, and then there is starting LT Tyron Smith who will be in need of a new deal if Dallas is going to keep him and lastly starting HB Tony Pollard will be seeking a new deal after the franchise tag this season.

So Dallas has 2 OL starters and their starting HB to figure out.....not to mention starting WR Lamb will be on his 5th year rookie option at near $18M and starting DE/LBParsons will be starting his 4th year of his rookie deal and could be holding out for a large new contract....plus Dak will need to rework his $59M contract hit....oh, and starting RT Steele will need a new deal....lastly there's starting CB Stephon Gilmore and S Jayron Kearse in need of new deals.

Long story short this could be the make it or blow it up year in Dallas.

The talent level is different for sure but it’s the ability to keep good young talent like these guys for the future

If we are looking at a 2 year window and then blow everything up, than I wouldn’t mind redoing Martins contract, but the fact that we are among the youngest teams leads me to think that’s not the FOs philosophy

Rustoleum, I’m thrilled that Martin is back but I was just concerned about mortgaging the future because I like what I’m seeing with the youth movement here

I can see both sides of people reactions to this, though

Oh, I can see both sides as well. I'm just thinking that, at least in the meantime, it's important that the oline is taken care of as they are the key for how Dak stays healthy.

OK. They did guarantee his base salaries for the next two years. Martin told Mickey Spagnola, "The guarantees sealed the deal. Didn't want to have to go through this again next year."

That means if they want to extend his deal, and move that money, which I assume they will rather than paying him $28 million, they will have to make Martin an offer he can't refuse. No leverage.

This year, the guarantees don't matter because Dallas essentially got a good deal in that not much was added to the contract. Next year will take some work if they want to make it palatable.
And that’s his leverage in addition to the obvious leverage they’ve given Dak Prescott given his cap number.

They’ve done a good job of keeping a talented team together, but there’s a significant cost yet to be paid.

They’ve ‘borrowed’ huge amounts from the future with the voidable years they’ve kept adding to these deals.

Eventually, the bill comes due.

Always a lot of guys to sing of course, but none of those players in the bolded are even close to Zack Martin. Biadasz has been average maybe he steps up this year but he isn't likely to be a top OL in the league. Tyron is always injured and needs to be replaced any way soon. Pollard is a RB and we all know the story with RBs in the NFL right now. Gilmore and Kearse will be key players this year obviously but neither will be here long term. Dak is a QB so always going to be a different animal. I don't extend him uunless he earns it this year (and I hope he does). Extending him will actually reduce his cap hit

Micah and Lamb will both get monster deals. That's part of why we have over $20M in cap space right now to roll into future years. But with the backloading of deals, Lambs big cap hits won't start until at least 2025 and Micah's 2026. We are in pretty good shape with our cap and certainly not in a make it or blow it up year this year.

It does, but it is usually mitigated by other contracts and restructures. I don't worry too much about it. The Cowboys have not been in cap hell since the 1990s when they had one of the NFL's most talented teams and had no idea how to manipulate the cap to retain them. When they want to pay a player, they do, even when it takes one of the top contracts for a position. When they don't, they blame the cap and move on.

I do. I’ve never been a fan of their kick the can accounting style.

Yeah but they’ve been in ‘Cap Heck’ plenty, having to lose good players because they couldn’t afford to keep them.

And many fans go right along with that. And suddenly, the player - say Amari Cooper - “isn’t that good” or is “not worth it”.

An old story.

Same. Should of at least had a few "real" years to it. I mean, they could restructure right away next year to lower the cap hit in March, but that dead cap in 2025 will be a beaut if they can't extend him prior to that. And this time he holds all the cards and is the dealer.
Definitely, I suppose it was discussed but he wanted too much on an extension and the Cowboys figured they would wait because a guard in his mid 30s isnt likely to get top dollar.

They didn't cut Cooper because they couldn't afford him. The cap numbers show that. That cut him because they were paying him to be a No. 1 and he didn't perform like one. They cut him because Lamb was taking over as the No. 1 and they preferred to invest in a younger player in Gallup as the No. 2 over him. They may have cut him because of his vaccine stance. If you think they cut him because they couldn't afford him, then you are the one who is going along with that.

Great. More revisionist history. Just like I mentioned earlier.

Sure thing. I’m not going to waste time revisiting this again.

OK. As I told another poster, I'm not in the mood to argue today.

People say this is not true but they do not pay attention. The bill always comes due and has been coming due for a while now. This year we are paying Lael Collins 8 million and Zeke 6 million. These guys are gone. Last year 33 million in dead money featuring manly Jaylon Smith, Lael Collins and Amari Cooper. The year before that is was 27 million in dead money featuring mainly Jaylon Smith and Travis Frederick. Every year we are paying for players that are long gone because of poor management.

Yep, star players have the team over the barrel. Just like the teams have the rest over the barrel.
Personally I do not believe this to be the case. Our 2 best seasons in recent memory involved a major purge of overpriced "stars" that for years we could not live without. We filled the team with youth and low priced free agents eager for a new pay day. Both times the team exploded. I will use the NBA as an example. IMHO if you are a team like Golden State you do what it takes to run it back as the guys are proven and they deserve the chances. If you are a team like the T Wolves you gotta just accept the fact that your "stars" are not stars get what you can for them and move on. Jerry loves his boys and stands by them for far too long. It takes a nuclear level melt down for his to react. no anticipation. No fore sight. Just swatting flies.

And the fact is the cap rises each year, which is why teams kick the can down the road because they will have more money down the road.

Do you think Dallas is coming to a crossroads of sorts given the contracts of Dak, Lamb, Parsons, and others are due? While of course, they can work deals in a way to afford them all, at what point does it stop in terms of the 'nucleus' of the team simply having to change? I for one sadly do not think JJ allows that to happen primarily due to his age and role as GM.

We are stuck with Dak for better or worse. Parsons and Lamb deserve their shot as the highest paid guys. I would be trying very hard to get out from under guys like D Flaw and Tyron Smith and Zack Martin before it is too late. Probably already too late for D Flaw and Tyron. Martin is now a best case break even player and getting older every year.
