Zach Martin's deal was smart, and here are reasons why I say that. Firstly, it's a reasonable amount for a guard. He was below the average salary, despite being one of the best guards in the league. Secondly, he's insurance for Dak. If Dak, being the QB, is the most important player on the team, then it stands to reason that the oline is in the top 5-6 of importance to a team. A happy and capable oline means that your QB will be better protected, thus allowing him to do his job more effectively. If you lose your QB, then your season is likely done. Thus, making sure Zach Martin is happy is insurance for Dak. Thirdly, it's not like it's going to impact Parsons this year anyway. Parsons can't be extended this offseason. Additionally, with the NFL finding new ways annually to boost their revenue, it stands to reason that the salary cap will increase. Thu, Zach Martin's deal will be a drop in the bucket.

All in all, it's reasonable amount that helps to ensure Dak is protected and able to do his job more effectively. Thus, Zach Martin's deal is smart.

He has been named to eight Pro Bowls and designated as All-Pro six times. He was elected to the 2010's All-Decade team.

His importance to the OL in terms of production and leadership are unmeasurable.

This wasn't about the money at all for Jerry, it was the statement it would make to other players in the future about just ignoring your signed contract and demanding more money because their feelings are hurt. No one put a gun to their head to sign the previous deal. Were they also willing to give back some money if they didn't perform at an All Pro level? Doubt it.

Jerry bit the bullet like we all knew he would and caved in. It's history now and Zack better get back to his All Pro level again. Stay tuned for the next player though.

Alternatively, it's an acknowledgement and 'reward' for a player who a) plays to the highest level for the position b) exceeded the contract he signed c) exceeded all expectations at the time of signing.

Fine if you want to stick to the argument "you signed the contract", however, you'll need to accept that that player may well (especially if he's top in his position) be disgruntled.

The design of his contract (when signed) was in the eventuality that in 2023/4 he "MAY" not be able to perform and would be cheap in 2023 and cut prior to 2024.

Or whoever the next QB is after Dak. Martin has probably about another 5-6 years in the tank. So, whoever the next QB ends up being will likely benefit from having Zach Martin.

It's smart in that it gets Martin onto the field, but it's a horrible contract for the team because they couldn't add years which A) ups the cap hit and b) means they're still having the extension conversation next year.

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say he is among the all time greats. You don’t let a player like that leave when he is still making 1st team All-Pro rosters.

One day when he walks away from the game, Zack will have earned his seat in the pantheon of offensive linemen, but the Cowboys were wise to bring the big dog back for a final run at the Super Bowl ring he deserves.

Tyron, DLaw, and Zack are the last men standing from the old guard. Unlike Witten, Dez, Frederick, Sean Lee, DeMarco, and Romo I’m hoping they can achieve that elusive championship and go out on top.

Exactly, and I hope that we can win a championship for Martin.

Yup, and I think the preseason game showed just how much we need Zach Martin.
I'm not convinced it really did. The OL was mostly backups. All very very young inexperienced players.

Had we entered the season without Martin then whoever filled in would be 1 of 5 non starters.

We needed before that game, it didn't do anything to change that.

Its not a great deal. They got nothing out of it other than him reporting to camp. Which he would have done anyway. Now if they had gotten him to extend his contract and agree to play another year or two, that would have been something. But all they did was give him more money for the seasons he was already signed on to be here.
