are you sure Houck was Garrett's pick - I tend to think it was Jerry's
That's what was talked about at the time. That was 2007-8 when Sparano left and it looked like Wade was just marking time for RJ to take over. That was also when Garrett supposedly pushed for Capers for DC, which is just completely bizarre and an indication of how much pull Garrett had with Jerry.

Probably below average to average. I've long argued that Romo makes our line look much better than it is.
Our pressure-to-sack ranking was 11th, and that's all Romo.

Here's a look at PFF's formula excluding the "AVERAGE BLOCKERS / PLAY" statistics, which I just don't know enough about to include at this point. Ultimately the results are pretty similar, but I would certainly argue that the revised statistics are much, much better. I've gotten each variable with virtually the same variance.

Under the revised system, we actually fare worse.

PFF System:
Code:
1	*Tennessee Titans	33.25
2	*N.Y. Jets 44.19
3	*Cleveland Browns	52.19
4	*Cincinnati Bengals	56.18
5	*Chicago Bears 57.26
6	*Baltimore Ravens	58.16
7	*New Orleans Saints	58.24
8	*New England Patriots	59.17
9	*San Diego Chargers	59.25
10	*Carolina Panthers	60.21
11	*Indianapolis Colts	60.23
12	*N.Y. Giants 61.20
13	*Denver Broncos 61.23
14	*Philadelphia Eagles	63.20
15	*Seattle Seahawks	67.17
16	*Miami Dolphins 68.12
17	*San Francisco 49ers	69.19
18	*Houston Texans 69.21
19	*Atlanta Falcons	70.16
[COLOR="Blue"][B]20	*Dallas Cowboys		71.29[/B][/COLOR]
21	*Tampa Bay Buccaneers	73.27
22	*Minnesota Vikings	75.16
23	*Pittsburgh Steelers	77.18
24	*Buffalo Bills 79.22
25	*St. Louis Rams 80.16
26	*Kansas City Chiefs	83.23
27	*Detroit Lions 85.21
28	*Green Bay Packers	86.24
29	*Jacksonville Jaguars	88.25
30	*Washington Commanders	89.22
31	*Arizona Cardinals	96.23
32	*Oakland Raiders	98.27

Revised PFF System:

Code:
1	*N.Y. Jets 18.80
2	*Tennessee Titans	20.00
3	*Cleveland Browns	21.28
4	*Cincinnati Bengals	22.69
5	*Baltimore Ravens	23.16
6	*Miami Dolphins	23.94
7	*New England Patriots	24.24
8	*Carolina Panthers	25.07
9	*N.Y. Giants 26.27
10	*Atlanta Falcons	26.67
11	*Seattle Seahawks	26.87
12	*Philadelphia Eagles	27.02
13	*Minnesota Vikings	27.23
14	*New Orleans Saints	27.42
15	*San Francisco 49ers	27.52
16	*San Diego Chargers	28.15
17	*Indianapolis Colts	28.32
18	*Denver Broncos 28.45
19	*Chicago Bears 28.85
20	*St. Louis Rams 29.09
21	*Pittsburgh Steelers	29.48
22	*Houston Texans 29.75
23	*Buffalo Bills 30.02
24	*Tampa Bay Buccaneers	32.10
25	*Kansas City Chiefs	33.25
26	*Detroit Lions 33.37
[B][COLOR="Blue"]27	*Dallas Cowboys		33.58[/COLOR][/B]
28	*Washington Commanders	34.28
29	*Jacksonville Jaguars	34.49
30	*Green Bay Packers	35.98
31	*Arizona Cardinals	36.61
32	*Oakland Raiders	37.61

The new divisors are 3.5 for sacks, 4.5 for hits and 10 for pressures.

I think it is more of a philosophy then it is the individual players. Jerry seems obsessed with trying to duplicate the offensive line from the 90s.

I honestly think we need to look for smaller, quicker more athletic players, similar to the offensive line philosophy Shanahan had in Denver. I truly believe it would be a much better fit for JG's finesse offense.

Ouch. Nice work, anyway.
Just to be clear, I wasn't assuming we'd do better. I just noticed that there was an obvious flaw in their formula, which could possibly create some odd results.

i agree with this.we dont really need these big linemen that we are stuck with right now,we should streamline with the draft.

I don't see how anybody but the most delusional of homers could believe that the 2009 version of the line was adequate at pass protection.

The lines from the 90`s were not only big, but they also were able to move. They all were fast and had good feet. Getting those type of players these days require good scouting and investing with draft picks. The Cowboys have a big line but they are slow and not that athletic. I like the big linemen that can play smash-mouth football , but if Jerry is not willing to invest the draft picks , they need to change direction.

All I can say is that I am glad that we had this pitiful game while it's still preseason. Get them out now. Because we all know, even the coaches and the players, that the Cowboys are a much better team than the one that trotted out there at Reliant Stadium Saturday night.

As expected, there are a lot of worried threads and posts. Because after all, this was our dress rehearsal. This was suppose to be the game where the Cowboys addressed all of their shortcomings.

A blowout at the hands of the Texans is not the end of the world my friends. Preseason means very little. Basically just get out without any major injuries and get some game time in. That is all it boils down to. The game planning is saved for the regular season. And that is all that matters.

For those of you who are worried to walk past the water cooler up at work because you'll have to confront the guy who likes to rib you every chance he gets, GET OVER IT! He's is probably more clueless than anybody.

Folks, it's preseason. We all want to see perfection and execution. We all wanted a victory. Just didn't happen. We're 2-2 and heading into another meaningless game against Miami.

Just remember, it's preseason! :starspin

That is a good point but dont you think with all the draws, pitches and shotgun plays we would be better served to have a quicker offensive line? JG's offense play calling is more about finesse and keeping people off balance then it is about smash mouth run it down your throat.

You can have a quicker line without having a small line. The current line is not athletic enough. A quick, big , athletic line can impose their will on the other team . They can get the big push to convert that fourth and one. It simply goes back to the current line not being a good example of what a mauling, punishing line can do. One way or the other this team is going to have to go a different direction to improve the line play. I always believed that a good big man will beat a good small man every time , but that`s just my opinion.

Larry Allen was a 2nd round pick, Nate Newton played in the USFL before joining the Cowboys, Erik Williams was a 3rd round pick, Mark Tuinei was an undrafted free agent in 1983 (they had 12 rounds then), Kevin Gogan was an 8th round pick, Mark Stepnoski was a 3rd round pick, and Ron Stone was a 4th round pick. I think it has more to do with the scouting of players, and even more, the players driving themselves to get better. It's not like the coach can make a player care about his career.

In regards to investing draft picks, since Jerry has taken over we have drafted:

44 defensive backs
37 offensive linemen
31 linebackers
30 defensive linemen
21 wide receivers
14 running backs
13 tight ends
4 quarterbacks
4 full backs
2 kickers
