I don't understand why the Cowboys fear 'cap hell'

They're not? A 4th for a 3rd string Qb isn't a waste? And now a 4th who has been a complete bust for 2 years? Hey, maybe Mingo will work out, he's got some tools, but that's a high price for a draft bust.
I don’t know if most of our fans know what a disaster having Trey Lance was to our cap last year. To keep our “3rd string QB” on the roster last year, look at what his total cap hit was last year:
  • Trey Lance 2024 Total cap hit: $5.1 million
  • Saquon Barkley 2024 total cap hit: $3.8 million.
We have two cap morons leading this organization. They can’t admit mistakes so they double down on them in hopes of looking better later. Stupid. Just plain stupid.

I'm not sure they actually fear CAP HELL. How many teams have ever been in real cap hell? How long did it take to get out of it?
Some would say that the Browns are in CAP hell because they can't do anything about that Watson deal, and he really fell completely off the podium after his legal issues.

I think the Joneses just like to make money, get attention, and build a franchise to support generations in the family.
Jerry was only burned by free agency twice that I can remember, and frankly, while Carr wasn't Deon and CB, he wasn't awful either, just overpaid. Zeke just ran out of fuel too soon.

Jerry wants to win, but he wants to win while making as much money as possible.
Every team has dead cap money to deal with. A year ago, the team that was considered to be in the worst cap situation was the Denver Broncos because of the Russell Wilson deal. They made the playoffs this year. In fact, 7 of the top 12 teams with the most dead cap money entering the 2024 season made the playoffs.
  1. Denver Broncos: $85.21MM
  2. New York Giants: $79.57MM
  3. Minnesota Vikings: $69.83MM
  4. Buffalo Bills: $68.47MM
  5. Carolina Panthers: $68.28MM
  6. Green Bay Packers: $65.53MM
  7. Tennessee Titans: $62.89MM
  8. Philadelphia Eagles: $61.95MM
  9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: $60.64MM
  10. New Orleans Saints: $59.44MM
  11. New York Jets: $59.24MM
  12. Los Angeles Chargers: $58.62MM

And then refuse to play the guy they gave up a pick for!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just insane crapp.

Trance was not only a waste of a pick. It was a waste of $5M. Most expensive Emergency QB in the history of the NFL. Then we had an emergency and still did not play him.

Every GM in the NFL would have been fired over this stupidity.

Neither move made any sense whatsoever.

That seems a pretty limited take.

Lance cost that pretty much the whole way and we extended double figures of cap space to this year so there wasn't an opportunity cost from a cap availability standpoint .

In comparison, the Eagles gave Barkley 4 voided years in his 7 year deal. $10m, most of his SB, won't be accounted until he is a free agent after two more years.

They guaranteed themselves dead money three years ahead of time. It's not all roses.

This seems to be a similar policy to the one they have with coaches. They will keep a coach under contract even if they want to replace him because of the potential spent cost.

Similarly here they are extremely risk averse towards free agency and contracts in general because of the potential dead cap.

It is one thing to say they only care about the bottom line it is much better to point to policy. He could leverage his 10 figure yearly earnings for a competitive advantage but he keeps it for himself. Jerry's greed is remarkable.

Mingo and Lance are not wasted picks.

Now Mazi….
Acquiring Mingo and Trance, when you consider the Cowboys’ circumstances, represent an unprecedented waste of picks. Neither will ever play a role in any Dallas Cowboys’ success. They are the poster children for why this franchise needs new leadership. No number of your ignorant posts will ever validate adding them to the team. Another such trade may necessitate the commissioner having to step in.

I don't think it's stupidity so much as arrogance, stubbornness, and a pathological desire for control.

Say what you want about Jerry, but he's a self-made billionaire. He's not actually stupid. He knows how to get things done. If he himself isn't smart enough to do something, he knows and can afford to hire people who do.

The problem is, he doesn't want to. He's going to be in control, just like he told John in Plano on that Ticket call years ago. And as long as they lead the Forbes list and he gets plenty of camera time and attention, he isn't going to change.

Jerry is NFL stupid.

Just because a guy can rebuild an engine doesn't mean he can build a house. Different skillset. Jerry is money smart, NFL football idiot. I mean, he's a complete t ard when it comes to NFL football.

Yep, whilst CAP HELL is a real factor. How and why we struggle is that Jerry is incapable of expediting the CAP situation, by have a PROPER 'reset year'.....he has to relevant in EVERY season and as such that elongates the effects on the CAP. 2024 should of been a hard reset (helped by trading some of those Vet's that were on the last year of their contract).

No one is happy about the cap.

Paying a QB mega millions doesn’t help.
I don’t think the cap itself is a big issue. The cash layout is. Jerry doesn’t like to throw all his cash out because he has it invested in other things

We wouldn’t have signed Barclay. Jerry kept him for ego. The good news is it’s just one year with no future costs. He didn’t want to admit the trade was bag. I honestly thought the trade was a somewhat reasonable risk. But keeping him was really dumb once you’ve seen him a year
