If Jerry really wants to be competitive then they have to be smart in free agency and the draft. They have to look at the current new coaching staff to see the best guys at the right salary to help and the guys that the coaching staff can coach up.
So this is what I would propose for free agency and the draft.
1. Jedrick Wills OT - should be a quality LT under Adams and move to his natural position at RT and then you can use Steele in a trade.
2. Will Hernandez OG - if Martin retires he helps strengthen the OL as RG or backup.
3. Chase Young DE - still immensely talented but needs the right coach and still young.
4. Javon Kinlaw DT - another guy who needs a coach that understands him, has the talent but needs coaching.
5. K'Lavon Chaisson OLB - a guy with immense talent but needs a young coach.
6. Amari Cooper WR - would be a 3rd option if draft goes well.
None of these guys are going to break the bank.
Draft:
1. Tetairoa McMillan WR - big guy with speed, should be a great #2, could be available at 12 once trades are done in top 10. Cooper would be a great help to him.
2. Ashton Jeanty RB - trade back into middle of 1st with 2nd, 3rd, and Steele and maybe another player. Very weak OT class so Steele worth a 3rd round value. Gives Schotty good offensive strength with those 2 selections.
5. Yahya Black DT Iowa
6. Kobe King ILB Penn St.
I appreciate the effort here. I do have some thoughts and questions, not meant to come for you or anything, just conversation.
Jedrick Wills OT - should be a quality LT under Adams and move to his natural position at RT and then you can use Steele in a trade.
If Steele is so bad that we simply must trade him and get rid of him, who then would you suggest would want to trade for him?
2. Will Hernandez OG - if Martin retires he helps strengthen the OL as RG or backup.
Not a huge fan of the player, however Klayton Adams did get the most out of him, this is a type of signing that I could see us making. Either him or Evan Brown would be good pick ups, I'd probably lean more towards Evan Brown myself, just because he can give you some Center play if needed, maybe even move him to Center and let Bebee man right guard, but that's an discussion for another day.
Especially since Steele graded out better than Willis especially in run blocking. On top of that there are questions about his willingness to play through some things. Willis projected cap cost about 3 mil to trade Steele you'd save about 4 mil in cap space, so netting 1 mil savings for a lesser player. Especially in an area of focus moving forward. Now trading him post June 1 makes more sense financially, but that is a risk of adding on 3 million more for a player that isn't the same caliber. I guess what I'm asking is why would a team trade draft capital for Steele when they could just sign Willis?
Chase Young DE - still immensely talented but needs the right coach and still young.
He is going to command a contract upwards of 70 mil over 4 years. Not the type of signing we need right now. He has under performed, and I agree has talent and may just need the right coach and situation. I just don't think Dallas is that place at that cost right now, when you consider our biggest need on the DL is interior DL which will not be cheap to replace.
4. Javon Kinlaw DT - another guy who needs a coach that understands him, has the talent but needs coaching.
This is the kind of signing we will probably see. And Id not be against it, but would like another DT added via FA as well. Injury history is a little concerning but if Whitecotton signs off on him I'm down.
5. K'Lavon Chaisson OLB - a guy with immense talent but needs a young coach.
Another good choice and option, if he doesn't resign with the Raiders, I could see us targeting him. We had interest in the draft for him too.
Amari Cooper WR - would be a 3rd option if draft goes well.
I do not see him coming back to Dallas, at all. We don't need a #3 WR option we need a #2 and/or 1A option there. at #3 we have a host of dudes who fit the bill.
Tet I would love, I'm not giving up draft capital to move up for him, but I do love the player. there will be 2 runs on the top end WR's one in 1st and one in 2nd. Likely will need to "overdraft" one but hey CeeDee fell and no one thought he would so never know. But I do like the player, just not enough to give up extra capital for him, not when we have so many needs to fill.
Jeanty.. this may be the most flip flopped choice talked about this year. I think most people are all in on him one day and the next are okay to let him slide. Either way, he is not a guy you give up a player and a 2nd and a 3rd pick for, especially in a draft that has over 30 draftable RB's and can grab one in the 5th who can help the team.
Love the Kinlaw and Chaisson idea's though. Don't see Young being a fit for us at his projected salary. Only trade Steele if you've already signed or drafted his clear replacement, then only after June 1st, but still think keeping him is the smarter decision right now with his strength being our new primary focus on the OL. Would not mind Hernandez or Brown signing for Guard spot I think either one makes sense with my nod going towards Evan Brown.
Now,
5. Yahya Black DT Iowa
6. Kobe King ILB Penn St.
I don't know enough about Black to really over much of an opinion on him, what about him do you like though? I do like his size, but he seems to project as a strict 1T
Kobe King Im a fan of, not sure he has the coverage ability that Eberflus likes but as a run stopper he would be good piece to draft solid work there..
