Step One in having a great off-season plan

Micah wants to sign now to free up money for free agency.
That's one way to look at it, or conversely, maybe he's just tired of the waiting he's had to endure, and wants to put a positive spin on it.
I hope it actually works out to the benefit of free agency, though. I'm not counting on it, knowing our FO, but it's certainly a nice thought.

There is an old saying in the NFL: Championships can be won or lost in the off-season. We saw that last season with the mystifyingly bad off-season we witnessed with our Cowboys vs the aggressive, targeted moves of the egirls. Before you can have a great off-season you must have a great plan.

The first step the Cowboys need to do this off-season is decide what kind of team they are trying to build. In fantasy football the focus is acquiring the best skill position players available. In real football it’s all about knowing what kind of team you want to build. You must have outstanding player talent evaluation of your current roster and what kind of talent is needed to fill the holes you have.

So what kind of team are we supposed to be building?
  • Is this supposed to be a finesse/speed team on both sides of the ball?
  • Is it supposed to be a smash-mouth physical team that can run the ball and stop the run?
Those are just two simple examples at both ends of the spectrum. Obviously there are many more styles. Honestly, I don’t know what kind of team our FO has been trying to build. That must be established in order to have a great draft and FA period.

One of the only good things about having multiple holes in your roster is there will be very good players available at multiple positions in the draft and FA. I am confident we can grab some talent.

But if we don’t know what kind of team we are building, how can we match talent to need? A great off-season plan starts right there.
From what i hear our plan is as follows:

- spend around 90% of salary cap money as players salaries to be conform with the rules
- have a 53 player roster at the beginning of the season
- have a designated starter and at least one backup at each position
- have ten players on the PS

- dont be too drunk during draft days
- dont have the stadium occupied by other events during home games
- have enough free timeslots for interviews and podcasts for Jerry and Stephen

They seem to be keeping it a secret. Maybe the FO wants to avoid looking stingy, again?!
Yeah, I think he basically took the job and said. Thank you very much and accepted a very low pay
The guy's a 25 year failure. In the NFL who's been fired everywhere he's been, so there's that.
He comes in introduces a new system has a little success in the beginning, but when defenses adjust he's toast.

A 25 year failure? A bit harsh…:even being an assistant coach in the nfl for a short period of time is a big accomplishment.

There are many great coaches in the N. F, l, who are not head coach material, it's a different breed. Ask Norv Turner and a hundred others. However good coordinators rarely get fired. It's a bad sign.
I'm just saying, don't get too excited folks.

I still wonder what kind of team we are trying to build. If there’s a plan it isn’t obvious yet.

This FO seemed to understand what they needed 2013-14 when they built a great OL around Romo. It seemed like they finally awakened to the fact that almost no QB can carry a team without a strong running game. Hopefully that revelation is back.
I think RB1 in the 1st is a must have. That would give us a top tier RB for 5 seasons.

RG1 is a problem. Bass would be an option. He was All Conf in NCAA and has played T also.

RT1 is another problem. Steele might hang on for another season. But the post june 1 cut saves the team a ton of $$$.

LT1 needs a lot of work too. Hoping the OL coach gets him on track.

LG1 and C1 are locks.

Hoffman, if he returns, should add depth.

My top 3 picks: RB1, RT1, DT (replacement for Osa)

A while back I made a thread about defining our philosophy. It was the main reason I didn't want Kellen as coach because of his 'non philosphy'. Last season MM said we were going to be a run game oriented first team and we didn't actually try to do it until week 15. Our legacy has always been strong defense and great running backs, the very things we've been missing the past 30+ seasons. Pick a lane Jerra!

Maybe.

OTOH, he's never had a HCing chance. There are many coaches in the NFL who are good at one and not the other. There's a chance that his forte' is quite simply being a HC, and he wasn't great at the others.

Not gonna happen

The Joneses are football idiots and have no philosophy of team building
They are purely reactionary
That is why we are only now trying to build a run game, because running teams are having success
Thats right , all we can hope for now is this new coaching staff bringing a culture change and new ideas ,and a more aggressive approach to Dallas.

It appears like they are looking to run the ball finally again. Having said that my bet is the Jones get bored and want to see Dak air it out.
I hope they come to their senses and use play action and motion ,so they don't get bored and reduce the need to have Dak air it out as much as he has .While they build a more balanced offense .Dak needs some help here ,and I think this coaching staff knows it.

The HC is selected only because he has no balls

Nothing will change
Just lip service
I agree,it has been sad for Dallas for quite some time .Maybe Shottenheimer and his new staff can bring some disipline to this team ,that sorely needs it.I am looking for a positive change and hope to see it next season.Shottenheimer looks like he knows how to build a coaching staff that is a positive start in my opinion.

Yup. If Dak is still throwing 50 passes/game, we'll know nothing's changed.

Does BS know that a 2 yard run can be effective? And that a 25/78yds stat line can be effective? Look at Barkely in the super bowl. 25/57. That's 2.3 YPC. Soooooooooooo, was that effective? Why did they keep running him? Yes, and because you must run the ball to win against good team. Philly already tried a buncha passing w/ Hurts vs Homes and lost.
