Sturm/PFF: Osa contract projection

We had this discussion yesterday in the draft zone, Draft one of the top DTs that looks like he could be a good three down player and sign a vet FA (preferably for less than $21M) until he gets acclimated. Braden Fiske was drafted in the second round by the Rams last season and put up good numbers as a rookie.

Context ..........PFF grades and stats
Overall grade.....68.1, ranking 38th of 219 DI
Pass rush grade...78.5 11th of 219 DI
Run defense grade 50.8 116th of 219 DI

15 solo tackles ..........15th of 219 DI
7 sacks ....................12th of 219 DI
5 assist tackles.........110th of 219 DI
39 hurries ...................5th of 219 DI
14 hits..........................4th of 219 DI
60 pressures ...............3rd of 219 DI
859 snaps ...................2nd of 219 DI
No doubt you need interior pressure but it won’t matter if we cannot fix our run defense. OSA and his 280 frame cannot hold up and remain productive throughout a full season, especially with zero depth behind him, which is another concern

I say no, not for that price. I would give him something in the $16 to $17 million range and choke at it.

If I was going to pay a DT $21.5 million it would be Milton Williams, and even that would make me hesitate.
For that money, I want an electric elite option, not a solid starter

Dallas has backed itself into a corner with all these 1 year deals. The DL talent is paper thin with no depth. Hence Odiggyziggy could get that deal here.

Cowboys (per Cap Boy) won't see Osa as a key core must re-sign vet ... they won't see him as a criitcal Parsons, Diggs Bland core player - so they won't go " all in" to re-sign Osa.

they will let him walk, depend upon a comp pick, and swing/miss on another 3 tech draftee.. or a band-aid cheap vet DT.
This was discussed when interviewing Eberflus, reportedly they both believe he should be a priority signing, which I disagree with. We shall see if they meet his price. If they do, really hope they don’t think the position is filled

I just looked up the contracts for DTs on Over-the-CAp and found Leonard Williams is getting $21.5 per year. Osa is no Leonard Williams. Maliek Collins is getting $11.5 million. Osa is better than that. I think that puts Osa in the $16 million to $17 million range.

The problem is, we cannot rely on every team to be rational. All it takes is one team to offer Osa $22 million and that becomes his salary.

I think he is just a little better than Collins was here. We are red alert status defending the run, think with that money they could potentially improve dramatically then paying for a ok interior pass rusher that tends to ware down each season

I'd prefer we give him the non-exclusive tag, which should be around $19 million for DTs. We don't have a replacement, and there's no guarantee that who we get in the draft based on how the draft falls is going to be good enough. So sign him for this year and try to draft his replacement. It is possible some other team will offer him a contract under that tag, but then we can see his true market value and decide whether to match it.

I don't prefer that we give him a big four-year deal because that almost guarantees that we will do nothing else at the position. The front office will consider it done and only add a DT or two late in this draft.
Agree completely with your philosophy here, but reality is the NFL needs to fix the transition tag in the next CBA as its mostly useless. I think a transition tag here basically means OSA is gone, and if you do lose him after giving him the transition tag he would not be eligible to get the Cowboys a comp pick coming back. Plus even though they fixed the "poison pill" issues with the transition tag its still not as easy as just matching the years and dollars.

I wouldn’t even tag him, just take the comp pick which could be as high as a third.

Hopefully they don’t waste it on Nashon Wright this time.

No thanks. I can sign 3-4 starters on defense for that
Yes 3-4 scrubs on the backend of their career. I am not saying he is wroth that money but there is a reason that if you were to list the Cowboys needs in the draft it is pretty much everywhere. OT, OG, TE, RB. WR, DL, LB, S, and, due to injury, CB. That is not me being hyperbolic by the way, those are literally the positions of need.

I mean if you do that that means you aren't gonna be a player in free agency and bargin shop. Which is probably what will happen anyway...

Take the comp pick and we need two high dt picks in this draft
