What about letting Steele and Guyton battle it out for the starting RT spot?

What about letting these two battle it out, hoping these new coaches can get something out of the both of these players. Who wins the spot, hoping they don't just give it to Steele because he's owed more money! Please give your thoughts
First off it’s not like the rest of the OL is filled out so I’m not sure what your plan is here or the premise for the topic. Second you can say the same thing about hoping they don’t just give a job to Guyton because he was a first round pick.

Then we have no one at OLT. And Guyton played ORT for a Lefthanded QB, so he is a blindside protector by nature and by skillset. At this point, we simply need him to get his technique ironed out. That's his only issue.

Are you sure about that, does he actually love the game??? There were some low key comments from reporters about his love of the game games he missed he could have played in

I really cannot comprehend why so many don't know this. Do they just ignore all facts and spew?
The issue isnt that we didn't know Guyton would be a bit of a project and have his ups and downs during his rookie year. The issue is Guyton really wasn't even close to a starting NFL caliber Tackle this year. He had a couple decent games, SF comes to mind, but his stretch of good play was extremely short. He started the season horrible but with some signs of life. He shows some growth mid year for a couple of weeks, and then absolutely fell off the charts showing significant decline in play and was benched to end the year.

Guyton started off bad and ended up worse. His progression was going the wrong direction. He still has time to improve into a starting caliber LT, but I see no reason to pencil him into the starting lineup before camp. Its the same mistake they made with Mazi. Elite athlete, horrible rookie year, but assuming pedigree and a new coordinator will fix him. Its possible, but not a smart bet.

Big red flag to me is how he ended the year....7 snaps against TB, 32 snaps against PHI, and 25 snaps against WAS. He was clearly healthy enough to get on the field, but the coaching staff didn't want him out there the whole game. Could be a disciplinary issue. Could be they didn't have faith in him to perform for 60-70 snaps in these games. Either way its not a good sign for your 1st round pick in games where the team was out of the postseason chase.

If he is on the roster after 3/16 Steele's money becomes guaranteed. If that happens I'm 99% sure he will be handed the starting gig. Honestly if there is going to be more of a focus on the run game Steele isnt a horrible option. Would I like to see the position upgraded? Yes. Was Steele nearly as bad as people want to make him out to be? No. I think Steele is closer to league average than people think. Guyton was significantly worse in 2024, and I think the real battle should be between him and Richards for the LT spot if they keep Smith at G.
The problem with Steele is pass protection.

Terrible.

Big Mike…

The kid will be ok.

Your expectations for him as a rookie were too high.

On draft day we knew he needed work, and it wouldn't all be fixed his rookie year.
The problem is three fold. Bad technigue, not strong enough and too many mental mistakes. We drafted him knowing there would be a learning curve, but no one expected him to be that bad.

Bingo. This wasn't just growing pains, this was a guy who was not ready to play NFL level football in multiple ways. Hes young enough that he could have a decent career still, but he has a loooong way to go and should not be guaranteed a starting role in 2025.
