What about letting Steele and Guyton battle it out for the starting RT spot?

Big Mike…

The kid will be ok.
Not sure I understand the connection there. McCarthy is far from perfect, but hes typically had pretty good OL play with his teams going back to GB. Even in Dallas he did OK with Tyler Smith, got a UDFA paid in Terence Steele, and not many people are complaining about Cooper Beebe after his rookie year. A lot of people are even high on the development of Hoffman, Bass, and Richards. Not sure why when one player is a total trainwreck its a coaching issue?

I hope the new OC and line coach slaps some sense into the team and puts their best lineman Tyler in the most important position LT. Then Guyton, Steele and Richards can fight for RT. Bass best spot is RG, let Bebe's former coach decide if he stays at center or guard. Easier to add another quality interior lineman to add to the competition.

The problem with Steele is pass protection.

Terrible.
I don't disagree, but if their focus is on building around the run game for 2025 why would they move on from one of the better run blockers in the league? Keep the plus run blocker and look for better results by slowing the defense down with shorter yardage passing downs, play action, etc.

Then we have no one at OLT. And Guyton played ORT for a Lefthanded QB, so he is a blindside protector by nature and by skillset. At this point, we simply need him to get his technique ironed out. That's his only issue.
Good point.
Plus with the new coaching staff, and year 2, he could make leaps forward.

There you go believing stupid media people.
those stupid people are more connected than you'll ever be, so i'll keep an ear open to what they're saying especially the LOCAL guys, why would they make this stuff up, if it were Shefter or rappaport i'd agree

But some do make stuff up. They must justify their jobs.
Broaddus is the worst at it.

So fans on here are allowed to make things up, or leave out certain info, so they can make something stick to their agenda and narrative.
But the media is not?

Let every man on the team battle for his position and let the best man win regardless of draft status.

IMO, the offensive line is in much better shape than the defensive line. I would focus my attention on the DL this offseason. Some people are advocating for using another 1st round pick on OL. I understand why. But they used two of their top 3 picks on OL last year. Playing the rookies did not work out, did it? But we drafted them, now it is time to develop them. Make them better players. Let's see how much they improve in another offseason. If Guyton improves and Beebe gets better, then Steel will be good enough for now. The only hole in the line would be RG. All they need is Hoffman, Bass, or Richards to step up into that spot. Or they can draft a guy in the 5th round to compete as well.

My point is, they have some options, and the probability of improvement on the OL is much higher than on the defensive side because the only DTs they have signed are Mazi,, Justin Rogers, and Denzel Daxon. They should use at least 2 if not 3 draft picks on interior DL, and maybe one more on the edge.

We have a bunch of young guys on the OL. If none of them turn out to be good players then there is a major failure in the scouting department. It's tempting to snag another OT for the OL, especially the way Guyton disappointed last year, but do we give up on a first round pick so quickly? If the scouting department is that shaky that only high first round picks can be trusted to improve the team then we will never get better.

Steele's contract is a problem. I understand that. He is not that expensive for a starting OT, but is he expensive compared to his level of play. Still, he played better the second half of last season. Why not stay with him again this year and let's see how he plays. They can always get rid of him next year. Cutting him creates a huge hole in the lineup going into the draft. His CAP number is over $18 million. They could restructure him a little bit to reduce that while still making it possible to cut him in 2026.

The issue isnt that we didn't know Guyton would be a bit of a project and have his ups and downs during his rookie year. The issue is Guyton really wasn't even close to a starting NFL caliber Tackle this year. He had a couple decent games, SF comes to mind, but his stretch of good play was extremely short. He started the season horrible but with some signs of life. He shows some growth mid year for a couple of weeks, and then absolutely fell off the charts showing significant decline in play and was benched to end the year.

Guyton started off bad and ended up worse. His progression was going the wrong direction. He still has time to improve into a starting caliber LT, but I see no reason to pencil him into the starting lineup before camp. Its the same mistake they made with Mazi. Elite athlete, horrible rookie year, but assuming pedigree and a new coordinator will fix him. Its possible, but not a smart bet.
Yes, we did. It was all over his scouting reports. It was extremely clear that he was a project and needed technique work. He should not have been starting this year, but was forced into action due to Jerry's personnel mismanagement.

No idea if he'll pan out, but he does possess the physical skillset to play at a high level.

The hate for MM is weird. He did a decent job here as a HC, especially considering the Jerry Chokechain.

Good stuff.

Guyton was a reach in the first due to him being extremely raw. Hard to say where he goes from here.

If we keep throwing 1sts at the OL, we'll end up like the 8-8 Romo teams w/ the worst D in the NFL.

Agreed. Hes not perfect, but MM was a solid HC. I think he gets dumped on so much this offseason just because the coaching change is the main reason for optimism people have as its unlikely Jerry starts seriously churning the roster.

He wasn't hired to do a "decent" job. And all the blunders from player management to time management to bad play calling to having the team wildly unprepared in big games is what's driving that hate. That's not weird, it's expected. In Dallas or anywhere.

Guyton was drafted to be LT.

Steele likely won't be a Cowboy at some point. Depends on what the Cowboys do with his contract.

So there won't be any battle for RT between them.
What’s wild to me is they traded down and took guyton. Meaning they were totally ok risking losing him. And then trusted him to play 17 games on the blindside starting out with Myles Garrett .

At no point did they think about the young players future and his confidence and development going forward? They did him a disservice

That was their fault not his
