The question is, who are those elite QBs? Outside of Brady, Rodgers and Brees at or near their peak, and Wilson and Mahomes, it seems to me the rest of the NFL is left with less than an elite QB. And that kind of "elite" QB obviously is hard to come by, otherwise we wouldn't have to go back to draft classes between 15-20 years ago to come up with 3 of the 5 elite.
It seems most teams have to find a way to build a team around a good, but less than elite, NFL QB, the way the Giants did with Eli, and the Ravens did with Flacco and the Eagles did with Wentz/Foles. If a team decides it cannot win unless it finds one of those rare, needle in a haystack "elite" QB's, they might be undermining their own efforts to win by neglectin other areas they need to improve chasing what they are unlikely to find. After all, the odds are much greater of coming up with another Blaine Gabbart or Jake Locker than another Pat Mahomes. Think about it, the elite QB that is the next closest thing to Patrick Mahomes in age is Russell Wilson, and he is 31 now. I don't think the odds are even that good of coming up with another Wentz or Cousins, and even if you do, is that really an upgrade at all, much less enough of one to make it worthwhile to risk being stuck with Paxton Lynch?
