You really miss my point. Jerry "Dumbo GM" Jones had 4 years with rookie deals for Dak, Zeke, and did not keep the defense in place or improved the defensive talent to when a championship. He let those players go to the other team with a QB on a rookie deal to take those defensive players and signed other talent to go for a Super Bowl.
You have to do both draft and sign impact free agents. Example of Jimmy Johnson as GM was 1990 Cowboys draft Emmitt Smith, signs Jay Novacek, James Washington, trades for John Gesek. 1991 drafts Russell Maryland and trades for Tony Casillas. 1992 drafts Kevin Smith, signs Vinson Smith, trades for Thomas Everett, and Charles Haley. Aikman gets his extension during the 1992 season, Irvin end of 1991 season, and Smith plays out the option year 1992. Dallas wins the Super Bowl 1992.
The league is not stupid, Jerry Jones is a stupid GM. You had a team that was 13-3 in 2016 with a rookie QB that was rookie MVP and a rookie RB that lead the league in rushing. Did he sign/trade for that "War Daddy", resign his veterans on defense, or sign more weapons in 2017? He did nothing through the draft or free agency to take advantage of it. Kansas City was 10-6 in 2017 (Mahomes rookie year), 12-4 in 2018, and Super Bowl Champions 12-4 in 2019. Cowboys with Dak and Zeke on rookie deals went 13-3 in 2016, 9-7 in 2017, 10-6 in 2018, and 8-8 in 2019. Please go compare Dallas Cowboys acquisitions vs. departures from 2016-2019 and you will see the obvious. Does Jerry Jones really want a Super Bowl or just keep the Cowboys relevant through the media?
25 years and counting........
