I can't link the article b/c it's from the ant-CZ newspaper in Dallas, but the paper assembled a panel of Gil Brandt, Babe Laufenberg, Brad Sham and Kevin Sherrington to assemble a list of the top 5 QBs in Cowboys history. Here was their list:

I never saw Romo as a great QB. But to put Dak in front of him is not OK.

Even from a contract (money) demanding point of view Dak still could learn a lot from Romo.

OMG, did you make this up? So, you don't know about Don's knees? Sad, dude. Go read about it and come back and apologize to his kids.
I saw Don in shorts at Sears in Valley View Mall a few years after he retired. Dude was struggling to walk and the thing that really struck me was how incredibly skinny his legs were. Looked like bird legs.

Those were NFC Championship games. Three more than Romo played in. I get the stat comparison. Playoff success goes to Danny. Losses or not. One was to a guy named Montana by a fluke catch no less.

why are so many posters so defensive of White? If someone prefers Romo and Prescott, why do so many get so upset?

What a bunch of mularkey. Bashing Danny White to prop up Romo? Something seriously wrong with you Romosexuals. Danny White led the Cowboys to not 1 or 2 but 3 NFC Conference Championship Games... and back-to-back-to-back. When did Romo ever sniff even 1 conference championship? A big fat 0.

Have some respect for those Cowboys greats who at least took the Cowboys to some championship game(s).

You and your ilk don't seem to understand what "team" means. Danny White was not a Cowboys great.

BTW, Brandt and these radio guys are getting slaughtered both locally and nationally about this ranking.
Even Cowboys haters think its really bizarre to have Dak ahead of Tony. Mind-boggling even
Maybe Brandt was thinking long term career?

anyway....

At this stage
  1. Staubach
  2. Aikman
  3. Romo or Whaite
  4. White or Romo
  5. Meredith
  6. Morton
  7. Prescott

Let me ask you this, even in the 1980s, if your quarterback was 12 of 25 for 190 yards, 3 TDs and 3 ints. in a playoff game, would you consider that leading your team to victory? The defense held Los Angeles to 13 points and we advanced out of the first round with an easy victory, despite White, in 1980. (White played well in the second game before a stinker vs. Philadelphia.)

How about when your quarterback is 15 for 26 for 143 yards and a TD (no interceptions)? The defense shut out Tampa Bay and we advanced out of the first round in 1981. (White actually put up better numbers in the next game, but we lost to San Fran by a point.)

1982 is the only year when it can be said that White pulled his weight in the opening playoff game, going 27 of 45 for 312 yards and 2 TDs, but he still had 2 ints. The defense again kept that from being an issue, holding Tampa Bay to 17 points.

Drew Bledsoe? Testaverde?

Yeah true... it was really hard to come up with that list. Actually took hours upon hours of film review, etc...Matt Castle was up there too.

It was unbelievably tough... But these guys just edged those others out.

I think Staubach was around 8th, Aikman 9 or 10... Romo and White were in the top 15 to I think...

Love the list without the ors...lol. White 3. Romo 4 and then a big gap between 6 and 7.

Gil Brandt deserves all sorts of credit for his scouting work 30-40 years ago.
He truly does.

But over the last several years he has started trying to evaluate talent in the current NFL and draft.
You can look up his predraft work if you like
He's one of the very worst...especially regarding QBs

Start with 2014 if you like.
Just Google Gil Brandt’s 2014 draft prospect rankings where he had the best player (not just QB but player) in-the entire draft being Johnny Manziel. Nobody had that. And its one of so any examples.
Loved Blake Bortles more than most too. But liked Aaron Donald less than everyone else.
Loved Trubisky and Desean Kiser more than most. Like Mahomes a bit less than many.
On and on and on.

He's got some right too. Its tough work. Just saying, he sometimes like to go out on a limb to be different and stand out.

It doesn't mean he wasn't very good 30-40 years ago though.
He was

Finally a realistic opinion on our quarterbacks. I couldn’t agree more with the list. I’d put Romo as 6th on my list.

I keep coming back thinking about ranking them, but I couldn't be unbiased.

Don took over as QB when I was 9/10 so I was impressionable. In those days of black and white television you never heard a commentator give their opinion of the team or the play. Gil Brandt, Tex Shramm, the gang were all PR so everything they did was to promote the Cowboys in a positive light. And I never remember ever thinking we weren't going to win.

The biggest disappointment for me was the Eastern Conference Championship in 1968.

The Browns won the Century Division and the Cowboys had won the Capital Division.
The Western Division was Baltimore vs Minnesota.

The game was tied 10 at half. Then Cleveland picked off a Meredith pass for 6. And Leroy Kelly broke a run for a TD. Suddenly we're down 24-10.

Tom pulled Don for Craig Morton who drove the Cowboys for a FG just before the 4th quarter.

The Browns scored again pretty much sealing the game.
Walt Garrison scored on a pass from Morton, but it too little to late.

Baltimore beat Minnesota. And the big story was Cleveland was the only team to beat Baltimore in the regular season. So this was going to be a classic.

But Baltimore had other ideas. They annihilated the Browns 34-0 and went on to meet the Jets in the Super Bowl.

For a while I was glad we didn't meet the Jets. The NFL was the superior league and I wouldn't want the Cowboys to be embarrassed by this upstart inferior bunch.

But then I realized the Cowboys would have beaten the Jets, if they had just gotten passed the Browns.

So Danny White was a 50/50 QB during the playoffs? Half of the time the team carried him, and half of the time he carried the team during the playoffs? He still was a part of the team that reached the NFC Conference Championship game 3 years in a row, so you should at least give him credit for that since that is not easy to accomplish, something Romo never accomplished and something Dak has yet to accomplish. Have some respect. Sheesh.

He was greater than most other Cowboys QBs. When you help your team reach 3 NFC Conference Championship games and all in a row, show me which other Cowboys QB has accomplished that?
If he’s so great, why did he only make one Pro Bowl and is not even in the Ring of Honor? If he’s so great why did his numbers go down once he got into the playoffs, not up? If he’s so great, why did he throw more interceptions (123) during his 8 year run as a starter han all but one QB? He didn’t accomplish anything, he was carried to the playoffs by his teammates. Stop pretending you know anything about football that far back, troll... you can’t even get your facts straight about 2013. You’re a joke.

LOL, you are having a mental breakdown... don’t even try to defend your arguments anymore. What happened in 2013 troll? Don’t worry... there’s still time for you to cry to a mod for help and get a hug.
