Do we blame Dak if we lose Cooper?

Dak playing crazy hardball could mean he will not have his favorite WR. If Coop hits free agency there is a good chance we lose him. Not sure how Dak does not see this? Why cant Dak at least move some on his side to meet the Cowboys?

I put the blame squarely on the front-office for this entire mess.

Exactly, their stubbornness in undervaluing coaching for years caused us to let the window of opportunity close while we could afford the most talent .
Now that the friends and family plan is history and we have a real NFL coaching staff they are going to be hamstrung with less talent to work with because we cant pay everyone

Swell!!

The front office gets almost all the blame. If I was Dak I would be looking to get paid simply because the Cowboys did nothing last season to adjust his salary.

The guy is a 4-year starter who made $4 million last year, kind of a joke when you think about what QBs are getting.

The key to the whole thing is what will Dak do if he's tagged? Will he hold out from camp and pre-season?

If not it's pretty simple, money-wise, pay Cooper and tag Dak, because obviously Coop isn't going to get $35 mil a year from any team, even if he sets the record it will be at most $20 mil a year, and tagging Dak is probably going to be at most about $30 mil, which I'm sure will make the "he's not worth Wilson, etc. money" folks deliriously happy, right?

So that's a total of $50 mil for the two, if they sign Dak for $35 mil then you'll have to tag Coop, which will be about $18 mil, total of $53 mil.

If Dak will hold out, with his already having issues with missing wide open receivers, e.g., that would be a great hurt to the Cowboys team, he needs all the practice time he can get now!

I really think both will be signed to long term deals, because at JJ's age, he doesn't have another 10 years to build the team, he has to be in "win now" mode, and I think that's pretty much everybody's view...

NFL radio had an ex-agent on this morning to discuss the Dak and Cooper contract situations. He said the Cowboys' front office made 2 critical errors:

1) They traded a 1st round pick for Cooper and did not work out an extension for Cooper immediately. He said the Texans made the same mistake with Laremy Tunsil.
2) Dak should have been signed to an extension last year prior to the Russell Wilson contract. He said this mistake could further compounded by tagging Dak and taking a risk that Patrick Mahomes signs a $40 million contract. At this point Dak's asking price could go up even more. No to the $40 million because you can't make a case that he is as good as Mahomes. However, Dak's agent may try to justify $38 million for example.

Dak is a GM now?

Big story if true lol

It's the front office's responsibility to manage the cap, not the player's.

If a player's salary demands break the cap, you move on from that player. If they don't, you pay them.

If your "GM" is a dope you dawdle while the player's asking price keeps increasing until the last minute, and either overpay, or are left with a hole you didn't backfill in advance.

Yes you have to wonder what Dak would have taken after 2018, would he still have been wanting the alleged $40 mil, or even $35?

Though a lot of Cowboys fans wouldn't have wanted him to get a deal after 2018, after doing things like the T. Crawford deal...

If we can't manage the cap then why can we always do whatever we want?

Hard to know when you're serious vs. when you're trolling, but uh the Cowboys basically opted out of being a serious player in free agency for years, so clearly they can't.

It's not Dak's fault the GM is bad at his job and ill-equipped to manage the cap.
Yep, they created this situation by trading for Amari in the first place. That trade alone made the contract that Dak is going to be getting at least 33% higher. Without Amari, his numbers would be marginal.
