you don't need to use a 1st round pick to pick up a very good Center. Like Mickey Spagnola said, this team has too many holes to fill. Best to use our 1st round pick on a game changer type of player.
Problem is the cowboys are picking just high enough to where your most likely not going to get a game changing CB or DE

I'm not a huge fan of center first round but if we can get an immediate high level starter then i'm not going to complain. Can't really cry if we have a high level center for cheap for 5 years
I don't care where they take him from 17 on as long as we take him. Plug and Play 6'4 320lbs
Agreed.

High level day 1 immediate starter at a position of need. What exactly are we complaining about ?

What's funny is all these forum users crying "we need defense, we need defense" are gonna throw a fit if we draft a DE or CB at 17 and it takes them a few years to get high level. There basically gonna pull a d-law and byron attitude and go "we'll i'm glad they decided to wait till there final year of there contract to ball out"

I would trade down in the first round and take CB Fulmer. That would give us 3 3rd round picks. I would trade two of those and get another 2nd rounder. Then I would trade our 4th and 3rd and move up to the top of the 3rd round.

I would take a DT and Center Cushenberry with our two 2nd rounders. Then go WR with that high 3rd round pick.

Then call it a day with 3 day 1 starters and that DT can be a big rotation guy and start next season.

Very impressive, but it's much easier said than done, when doing it in the real world.

You'd definitely be the envy of every team in the league if you were able to pull it off.

Meeh.. you are describing a philosophy that does not happen to be used by the Cowboys. Only 1st round picks out 5 starters are Tyron 9th, Zach 16th and Frederick 31st.
Travis has retired. Neither Connor not McGovern are first Rd caliber players. If Ruiz is worthy of 17th overall pick then highly likely he'll have a HOF trajectory with this Cowboys Oline recent history.

We haven't even seen McGovern yet.

:dance:This is my guy! I want Ruiz! He'll be the best player available at a position of need. Connor, McGovern and Looney can figure out LG or Swing Tackle.

Great, so after passing on players like Zach Allen and Maxx Crosby to take McGovern last year we need use another first round pick replace center.

How about this for the sake of discussion. A small trade down from 17 to say 22, just enough to get an additional 3rd. Then use that 3rd and a 4th next year to move up from #51. Could maybe net you a Diggs and a Ruiz.

Yes we have..... McGovern got injured! It's part of the game.

Why would I pass on drafting a position of need at Center when I can possibly get a premium pick to solidify that position for next decade?

Because I have Connor McGovern an injured 3rd RD Pick 90th overall whom played both Center and Guard...

Zach Allen was long gone when they drafted McGovern. Lot of teams missed on Crosby who didn't go until the 4th round.

Yes my mistake Allen picked at the top of the third and after picking Hill we weren't looking at DL but I would trade hill for him in a second. Crosby was a late climber rated highly and the Raiders got a really good player. In fact along with the 49s they had an excellent draft. Who would have thought Mayock and Lynch former network analyst and player GM masterminds.

Ruiz graded as the 17th rated player in the 2020 draft.
Highly unlikely.
An equally rated, or a slightly above graded player than Ruiz should be available at 17.

With that being the case, given the deficiencies at every level of the defense (secondary, LB corps, & defensive line), & an opening for a 3rd WR, how is selecting a C at 17 productive at an overall team development?
Continually saturating high picks as investments on the OL exposes high risk/failure at other fundamental positions of the team.

More like 39th.

If they do that then then I hope they use the extra pick received and their #2 to to get a second #1 at the end of the round.

I am a big believer in taking care of the lines. We don't have the same line we did a few years ago...at all. I don't follow college ball, but if this is the best center in the draft, I take him at 17.

If teams ignored the differences in position value, an interior OL would most often be the BPA in terms of being the best player at his position.

In other words, if the 3rd best pass rusher and 3rd best interior OL are available, teams will take the pass rusher. They generally won't take that 3rd best interior OL over a pass rusher until it's something like 6th best pass rusher vs 3rd best interior OL.

Having said that, I put a higher value on OC than OG because most OCs can play OG but many OG can't play OC.

Because it's not possible to field an offensive line that's not made up of all first round picks.

No team has ever had any success without that strategy.
We could draft D-Line and have 3 1st rounders there ...

I agree with the idea of trading back and getting a center. I don't want to see Tyron Smith go down while we are playing those Connor boys right next to one another.

Perspectives suck some times,, and yes the knee jerk suggests we suck.
