No, not the same at all. I'm shocked you're struggling with this.
Please... layman's terms then.
He plays this year, what's his cap hit the next year?
He get cut this year, what's his cap hit next year?

If you play Crawford and let it play out... 8m is opened up next year.

CRAZY STUFF!!!

Next year is ALREADY OPEN! It has NOTHING to do with saving $8 million more this year.

There is no cap hit next year! There never was! You save the $8 million THIS YEAR, to use how, or roll over.

Could be. I'd say it's more about the current asking price. I think Griffen thinks he's worth more than the league currently does.
Wonder what that asking price is because I assumed it was a one year 8 million dollar deal. I guess what Quinn played on last year.....
If we cut Crawford and don't sign anyone else. The 8m he would earn this year is rolled over into next season.
But if you keep him....you still have that same 8 million next year.....

Lol... I can see your face turning red.
Awesome.

And It's still either him and 8 this coming year, or possibly noone and 8 milly the year after.
The 8 milly comes back either way.

This is why I said in my first post: unless they want to spend for someone else.

Just wow.

Lets say the total salary cap is maxed at 180m this year and Crawford is contracted for 1-year 9m with 1m is guaranteed. If we cut Crawford we have 172m (including 1m dead money), if we don't spend that 8m that opened up from cutting Crawford, and the salary cap remains the same, the 8m is rolled over into 2021 giving us 188m to spend. Crawford is completely off the books.

Changes nothing about my post.
That money comes off either way.

Like I said:
Unless the team is going to spend that money, it comes off next year.
Suck it.

Not red, but shaking my head at your failure to grasp this concept.

Here's how the rollover works, to my knowledge, in a crude example. I might have this wrong, so someone with a better cap understanding can correct me.

Let's start with a few premises:

- The 2020 salary cap is $100MM
- The 2021 salary cap is $105MM
- All Cowboys players, besides Crawford, have the same cap hit in 2020 and 2021
- Crawford is an $8MM cap hit just for 2020 as his contract expires in 2020.
- Cowboys are using all $100MM of the cap this year.

Let's say they decide to then cut Crawford. His cut results in the Cowboys cap now being $92MM. They don't spend that $8MM in space and roll it over to 2021. In that sense, the Cowboys "cap" in 2021 isn't $105MM, it's $113MM.

If they don't cut Crawford, the cap is just $105MM.

Now, in both cases, since Crawford is gone, the Cowboys only cap commitments both years is $92MM. So under the rollover plan, the Cowboys would have created $21MM in cap space for 2021. In the non-cut scenario, the Cowboys only have $13MM in cap space for 2021.

Therefore, there is an incentive to cutting Crawford from a cap perspective for 2021. The question the team has to ask themselves is Crawford (or any player for that matter) more valuable than the cap space they could have in the following year by utilizing the rollovers? I suspect the Cowboys say yes, but personally, I am not so sure.

Sean lee and even witten played for less money. Lee played quite well. Crawford needs to take a major salary reduction.

You want the player gone this year and save the money.
I get that.
I'm saying that if the team wants him gone, then spend the money.
Otherwise that money is coming off the books next year anyway.

Is that wrong?

And if it is, please don't be a punk and just say no.
I want to know where I'm going wrong so that I can be educated.

Is his money coming off the books the next year anyways, or not?

I saw a bunch of the defensive starters in Cowboys Club meeting with McCarthy for dinner a couple of months ago. Crawford was there.

I am hoping he is moved along. The Jones's have some pet cats and he is one of them.

Very pedestrian player.

Not.

It is not.

Crawford is NOT and NEVER WAS accounted on the 2021 cap. There is nothing to be saved there.

You can cut him now and save $8 million. To use NOW, THIS YEAR, or to roll it I WR to sign anyone next year.

If you don't cut him, you never save that $8 million. It's gone forever.

Armstrong

That’s already 9 linemen who are 100% making the team. (I suppose Armstrong isn’t 100%, but the team loves him). That doesn’t include Crawford, Jelks or Jackson. If we add Griffin? That’s already 10. We don’t need Crawford. Griffin is a major upgrade and we can have him for about the same money as we’d save by cutting Crawford.

Yup. It’s time to be done with Crawford.

So the same thing, but you're wording it differently.

I am not sure you really understand how the cap works.

I think what you aren't grasping is that any cap space you can rollover into the next season gets ADDED to the base league salary cap. So in essence, in Crawford's case, if you cut him today, not only is he not a salary commitment next year, you'll be able to increase your base salary cap by whatever of his 2020 cap hit is rolled over. Look at my crude example above.

Thank you.
Let me consider your work.

Thank you again.

So what is the monetary difference in cutting old boy this year, as opposed to letting him play his contract out money-wise?

You're still just as wrong as you were at the start.

I'm really surprised.

Not sure what you mean by monetary difference? Cash wise, you'd save $8MM this year. Cap wise, you'd save $8MM this year, that could be rolled over to 2021 and create more space in 2021 than you'd have if you just let him play out his contract.

So there is clearly a cap benefit in the future to cutting him now. The team has to weight that benefit against the fact they believe he's a really good player and valuable to the team in 2020. My gut says they think he's that valuable that rollover space (or using it on another FA), isn't as important.
