Remember a few things:
1. We don't make excuses for current and past coaches ever. It's always their fault when it comes to performance.
2. Nobody has any clue the talent he had around him- good, bad, or indifferent.
3. Saying "couldn't be worse than X" is an ignorant statement.
4. On the forum Richard was the second coming of Christ

For me it is simple, McCarthy want him here to run his defense. This is not a Jerry or Stephen hire this is McCarthy putting his staff together. What Nolan did or did not do at any other stop means nothing to me, only thing that matters is how he puts this defense together and coaches them.

I'm not going to say that I would be willing to try anything after the Marenilli experience, but.....
Rod inherited one of the worst defenses in the league, improved every single season, then it dropped off again once he lost DC duties to Richard. Not sure your point.

The above doesn't look appealing. One thing I believe is that we need the defensive scheme to complement the offense. We are an offensive team, we are loaded on that side of the ball with talent and have had more resources put in on that side. Last year's bend but don't break defense did not complement well with our dynamic offense. That style of defense complements well with our 2014 & 2016 style of play, which was centered around ball-control. This kept the defense fresh, and we were deadly when we got on a lead.

If Nolan truly does bring an aggressive scheme, the value won't be shown by the finish in yards and points. If we can be within the top teams in turnovers and 3rd down percentage, our dynamic offense will have more opportunities.

McCarthy and Nolan have never been on the same coaching staff. Not once. This is without a doubt a Jones hire.

It should mean something to you, past performance is the best indicator of future performance. Way better than hoping and praying.

I recognized the name, but was unaware of who he was when they announced him as our new DC. Everything I've read since then has been about the same as what you posted. Nothing blatantly calling him bad, but no glowing endorsements either.

Great point about the style of defense needed to complement our high-octane offense.

Dak threw for over 4,900 yards and Zeke is still Zeke. Let’s speed up the game and get these guys more possessions.

The main issue for me isn't the raw stats, it's the fact is the amount of times the team let him go and then the defense turned into a dominant force after he was gone.

Not really understanding your rankings. Cant tell is some are before he left or after he left.

Nolan is a high risk, high blitz, confusing defense. If you don't have the personnel you get roasted.

Can you give the turnover numbers for some of these defenses?

You're right they did spend one season together in 2005.

I'm meh about the hire too. Remember his time in Miami and while he ran the 3-4 there, to me it seemed like he would call the game right in quarters 1-3 then go too conservative in the 4th. The team found ways to lose in the 4th quarter and IMO defense played a role in that.

But, hey, as with most things, willing to give it a chance. Not much else to do.

Man Mike Nolan is the first DC Coordinator where I have zero expectations. I want to expect the worse....I want to expect the best.....I have no idea what to expect. I haven't felt that way about a DC in awhile. Rob Ryan, Wade Phillips, Kiffin, Maranelli....I knew what to expect to say the least.

I think there is definitely some reasons to be concerned about Nolan. He's never really consistently fielded good to great defenses. That's not to say it might not work here but IMO, people are acting like he's a slam dunk hire and I am not sure that's the case.

Then again, maybe they aren't looking for Nolan to field some Baltimore level defense. Maybe they just want him to dial up a defense that gets to the QB and gets turnovers to pair with an elite offense. So if we give up 25 points a game and 390 yards, great........... as long as we create turnovers and sacks.

He's a bum who was coaching linebackers for the last few years because he's always been a bum. If his last name wasn't Nolan, I doubt he would even be coaching, to be honest.

With that said, it is clear that this was a Big Mike move, and not a Jerry move.
