Nothing is better in the hot summer months than a nice watermelon.
What say you, salt or pepper on it?

We dice up watermelons and stick it in the frig. After it cools down it makes a great snack. Just sprinkle a touch of salt on it.

Also, JMO, but watermelons taste better than the seedless watermelons. Dealing with those pesky seeds is no big deal to me.

Follow the guide, and you will always get the best watermelon available at your store that matches exactly what you are looking for and want.

Very interesting thread, thanks for posting. I’ve always wondered if there was a trued and true way to pick watermelons, I’m going to have to test it out.

I agree that regular water melons have better flavor than seedless but not enough to justify dealing with those dang seeds though. I also much prefer boneless chicken wings over chicken wings, streak with no bone over steak with bone, turkey breast over leg...you get the picture. When I throw down I don’t want anything getting in my way, all of those things obstruct my feeding frenzy.

Cantaloupe is another one that can be tricky to pick.

The two things I look for are:
  1. Smell the rind. If you can't smell cantaloupe, put it back. If you smell a slight scent of sweet cantaloupe, Odds are much better you've got a good one.
  2. If it's extremely hard, keep looking.

Anyone else have any insight?

Maldon Sea Salt, the crunchy morsels are perfect for watermelon. S&P on cantaloupe.

I infuse liquor with a variety of fruits and vegetables. The watermelon infused tequila is my favorite. The salt, my favorite substance to abuse, and a Melonrita were made for each other, just like pickled jalapeno halves and peanut butter.

I stopped thumping them. First of all, didn't know what the hell I was listening for and dependent on my mood, I could go all Keith Moon on them and have to buy battered and bruised melons.

Speaking of melons, and everyone in this thread should be, where is our favorite melon head Melonfeud? Where has that rascal gotten off to?

We're growing some watermelon this year. We will have to watch them like a hawk because our garden is next to a walk path and it's been known people will stroll into our garden and help themselves to some of the items we're growing.

Ummm, whereabouts do you live, an address would be helpful. I will try and keep a lookout for those unscrupulous melon thieves.

The thumping is about telling how hard they are, but you can also tell by squeezing them. Thumping them tells you if it's starting to soften inside though. Though if you can feel it, then it's ripened quite a bit.

As for @Melonfeud, I'm sure he talked himself into a box and is trying to figure out how to escape!

I have to give credit to my wife. She found that chart. I've followed it since she did and have a success rate well above 90% in finding a good watermelon.

Growing up in East Texas we were not beyond going into some fields we knew for a treat. Yeah we had ... rock salt sprayed at us.

I can thump 'em, grow 'em, and fight the coons for 'em. Grandma liked the yellow meated ones. Me, I'm a red meat guy ... thrown into a cooler overnight with 20 lbs of ice and water. I'll take a Charleston gray too 1st.

wow...that's ...ugh people. We grow stuff and end up losing things like watermelons to the squirrels and other wildlife. The Texas spiny lizards that inhabit our yard generally keep the bugs at bay though.
