Obviously you didn't learn from the Amari Cooper trade.

When you trade premium picks for someone nearing the end of his contract, you need to extend him likely before the trade. Like the Bears did with Khalil Mack.

Otherwise, you give ALL the cards to the player. The team has given up valuable draft capital and would have nothing to show for it if he walks. Cooper knew this and took full advantage of it. As a result, the Cowboys were forced to overpay.

Now you want to repeat that mistake for Adams. No thanks. I think he's terrific and would love him on the team. But you would have to agree on an extension BEFORE you give up the draft picks to obtain him.

That's the right way to do it.

:hammer:

Hopefully, this helps those who still don't get it.

I'm glad that you brought up Jalen Ramsey as that trade is yet another example of what not to do in this league. Because they gave up so much for him, like the Texans for Tunsil, the Rams are bent over a barrel and now have to pay Ramsey anything and everything he wants in order to justify the draft picks they gave up.

Thank you for showing everyone exactly what the Cowboys shouldn't do.
I mean, anybody who pays attention to the NFL would think this is common sense.

They now lost all leverage. Connor Williams a second and a 4th.
Dexter Coakley and Chad Hutchinson straight up plus a 7th.

Glitter done Jerrah.

It's a cautionary tale for the rest of the league on what not to do.

The Texans did it because they had no general manager.

Jerry Jones will never fire his GM.

I expect the Rams GM to be fired fairly soon.

While I would love to add an alpha like Adams to a defense that sorely needs one, in looking at the cap for the next couple of seasons due to the ravages of the pandemic on league revenues, the Cowboys may have a very hard time fitting a new contract for Adams in along with the long term deals currently held by Lawrence, Cooper, Elliott, Martin and Smith, and the even bigger one coming for Prescott. This has to be a consideration with the timing of this.

What is this I hear. A "star" player is unhappy and wants to be the highest paid in his position in the NFL? Well my man you have come knocking on the right door. We will even give up draft picks for the privilege to do so.

Now that the freckled puppet is gone, gone are the days of being given a high slot on the dept chart because Garrett fancies you as a man! Now we have a coach whom is looking to put players in positions of their strengths and not seniority. There is no doubt that these players are going to be used where they're needed most and if Aldon comes in beastin it up, he will get ample opportunities to play high on the depth chart.

I honestly believe that we're all going to be pleasantly surprised to watch our team compete now that we don't have coach who pampers the players and makes them feel safe. Big mike is more no nonsense and the players will pick up on that and play accordingly.

This board as a whole underestimates how great Jamal Adams is. He's a borderline Top 20 player in the entire league.

Yeah, he's a safety. But he's a gamechanging safety.

Adding Adams to this defense not only makes the team better because of his play, but because he is the War Daddy, the dawg, all those things you want from a vocal leader that sparks a defense to be nasty. The edge that Charles Haley brought, that's what Adams brings.

He's well worth a low 1st round pick and a midround pick, which is what I think will get him now that the Jets have lost leverage.
This. The safety position is so underappreciated and a true War Daddy who will challenge the rest of the D (which we have not had since Ken Norton Jr. or Darren Woodson) would be worth at least a first and 3rd or 4th.

Adding to the Jets’ frustrations with Adams is the fact that, if he is traded to certain teams, he would not demand a contract extension. And further compounding the problem is that Adams may not be content to be the league’s highest-paid safety, which would give him an AAV of roughly $15M. Instead, a source who has looked into acquiring Adams tells Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com that Adams is actually seeking a contract that would put him among the highest-compensated defensive players at any position, which would mean an AAV in excess of $20MM (Twitter link). Given his youth and skill level, it’s not surprising to see Adams shoot for that goal, but it would be surprising to see him achieve it.

I'm less concerned about the draft pick we give up should Dallas pull the trigger on this deal the real concern is the contract demands Adams is looking for.

You will lose either Gallup or Cooper in two years probably. You also probably let Lewis, Woods and Awuzi walk and go cheap on corner.
The plan after hitting on Lamb absolutely BETTER be to drop Cooper and his 20M in two years and spend that money on defense.

Are we REALLY going to pass on getting an All Pro player because of wanting to resign those three scrub DBs??

First, if you acquire Adams, theres no need for Woods.

And if they dont retain Lewis and/or Awuzie, it's not "going cheap" at corner.

They just drafted 2 in the top 4 rounds. Those guys arent back anyway.

Back to my point.....theres NO one that must be retained that we want to give a second deal to until we are able to get relief from the Elliott, Cooper and Smith deals after 2021.

Cap space and acquiring Adams are not a related issue.

i'm all for letting a player and his agent test the waters for whatever deal they can make, but only if it's solely acceptable to me. let them do the work. if they come up with a deal i can't refuse, make the deal. if they get a lesson in humility, so much the better.

100% pass on him

You'd have to give him the money of two starters plus the draft pick or picks of another starter

I'm not giving up what is essentially the overall worth of three upgraded starters for a box safety regardless of how good he is

I believe our offer was a 1st and Brown. Not sure if we offered any other pick.
IMO a first and Brown is a better offer than a 1st and a 3rd.

We know Brown is a useful nickel corner.

A 3rd round pick may be something special, but the bust rate is higher than people think.

People tend to think every draft pick is a guaranteed hit. It's very far from that.

If that's the kind of money he's really looking for, it's an absolute non-starter.

I doubt anybody would pay it, but if somebody does it better not be the Cowboys.

He is an All Pro. They tend to make more than "starters," about double, so that's a wash.

If you call him a "box safety," you haven't seen him play much.

And if you think a first round pick is a guaranteed starter, I'd like to introduce you to Taco Charlton, among many others.

My God why can't this go away! Cowboys would be morons to even entertain this. He's not worth the trade value or the contract he'll be looking for. Can't keep trading away first round picks and thinking that's how you build a team.

Yes because rolling with 6th rounders back there has worked well for us, just as long as we dont PAY him, and push money not used to next year, OR heaven forbid trade a 1st rounder and make the draft not so entertaining next year.

At some point it has to be about making a move that puts you over that top, not carrying over cap dollars or keeping picks to have fun with the draft, when they are far from guarantees.
