He just did it for fun. Machining is not only his job, but his hobby. So, he made a solenoid boxer engine. Pretty cool if you ask me. You could even put it to use, but I don't think that was his point.

I've seen people build mini-gas engines too. They are cool too, but not really that useful for real world applications as an electric motor would be more useful than a mini-gas 8 cylinder gas engine. Most many engines are dual fuel engines. (gas and oil mixture) For things like RC helicopters and planes.

This guy is cool. He basically teaches you about different electric motors and crap and shows you have to take them and build other stuff with them. Here, he takes a rowing machine and adds electric motors to it. Not to power it, but for the kids to row and generate power to power their gaming console. hah No exercise! No gaming! rofl. AWESOME!
