If you were Jerry Jones, how would you approach Dak for an extension?

This is all about money and not years like the media keeps saying. If it were about years who wouldnt want a short term contract with Dak. He has proven nothing except he can play in the NFL with a great supporting cast. Jerry should yank those previous offers off the table and replace them with a 3 year 25 mil a year contract that expires in 15 min and say take it or leave!
Shorter deal favors dak and longer deal favors cowboys. The idea is to spread the guaranteed money over a period of up to 5 years. That's a lot better than 4 years. Imo, Stephen is doing the right thing by wanting a 5 year deal. He has more than one player to consider.

This comment doesn't make sense. If the Cowboys didn't think Dak was worth a long term deal why would they be talking about $320-35 million at all?
The question was if you were Jerry Jones how would you approach Dak for an extension. I think Dak has one helluva lot if nerve asking for the money he wants. And I don't believe for one minute length of contract has nothing to do with it. The op asked for responses and I gave one so it makes perfect sense! The shorter the deal will expose he isn't the guy to take this team where the fans want.

Huh?

This makes zero sense. The Cowboys want the longer term deal for cap purposes. It's their MO and you can see that in most of their recent big contracts. They want Dak under contract for 5 years so they can spread signing bonuses over a longer period and then they will have the luxury of converting base salaries to bonuses and spread them over a few years to manipulate the cap in a given year.

Dak wants as short a contract as possible because he wants to cash in as often and as soon as he can.
I wouldn't give him a long term deal and get saddled with him for that long. He isn't the guy to take this team where the fans want it to go. And the op asked what you would do so YES! My comment makes perfect sense for what I want.

Nobody thinks years have nothing to do with it, but it’s team that wants the longer deal, not Dak. From reports Dak is asking for something over 4 years around the price or maybe a litte above what Wentz and Goff got. How does asking for that take a lot of nerve? Seems like the going rate.

I expect some players, and their agents, can rationally assess the value that Jerry brings to the table.
The value agents see is in the paycheck. They aren’t going to short change themselves on that hoping to make it up in endorsements. Besides, the endorsement opportunity is an added incentive for Dallas to attract free agents, but if free agents see they have to rely on endorsements to make up for being short changed in a contract then it doesn’t actually add that much incentive.

And, are we really seeing a lot of national endorsements across the Cowboys roster above what we see with other teams?

I'd look up the Naked Eyes song and sing...
"Dak..Never had a doubt, In the beginning"
"Never a doubt"
"Trusted so true, In the beginning"
"I loved you right through"
" And you made me, Promises Promises"
"Knowing I'd believe"
"Promises Promises"
"You knew you'd never keeeep"

I don't have a chart of money, but the Cowboys get the nationally televised games and the media talk. Cowboys get the eyeballs. That translates into marketing money.

Look at the ranks of broadcasters. It's half Cowboys. Last two Dallas QBs are the lead color commentators for Fox and CBS. Moose. Irvin. Deion. Woodson.

There shouldn't be any excuses for Dak this season. Loaded offense, better overall coaching with McCarthy on board. Anything less than the NFC Championship game this season would be a big disappointment.

Jerry to Dak : look son , I was at the Philadelphia game in philly . You couldn’t throw one TD , and missed many . However , I stuck up for you against many detractors and critics who told me you ain’t worth More than 22-25 mil . Heck , I could have had Brady for 25.
Look son , i just about had it with this negotiation process and you agent . No more games . I will leave you this contract averaging 33 mil for the next 4 years . In the morning , it i don’t see a signed contract on my desk , you better hit the market and find another team next year . And by the way , don’t think for a moment I won’t have you benched this season if you mess up again . Andy looks mighty good in drills and I would love to see the Italian stallion I just drafted get in there . Good luck to you . We won’t have another conversation on this . Trust me !!

Tell him 5 years, or he can play on the tag for two years, then if he doesn't like the deal, he can walk.

The man's good, but Jerry ain't getting any younger, if Dak doesn't at least get to the NFC championship game this year, or the next, with this team, then like Garrett, he's had his chances, time to move on. Realistically in two years there will be so many good core players that simply can't all be signed, the team's going downhill anyway.

Take your best shot for two years, if it doesn't work out, start over. Go back to 1989...

I still think this deal gets done in 15 minutes
if both sides want it.

Just sit down and talk it out.

Bingo!!!!! .......I'm no longer sure BOTH SIDES wanted a long-term deal at this time. In fact, both can make a strong case for holding off until 2021. Just me but it defies logic to think a one-year gap would be a killer for a contract of this magnitude which is why I think there's something deeper going on.......perhaps related to the V word.

  • DAK PRESCOTTQB, DALLAS COWBOYS

ESPN's Ed Werder reports that Dak Prescott's "decision to sign the franchise tender is not an indication that a long-term agreement is close."
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Prescott will sign his franchise tender on Monday. That will ensure that he shows up to training camp on time and play the 2020 season in Dallas. Beyond that, things need to be worked out and time is ticking. The Cowboys and Prescott have until July 15th to sign a long-term deal this season. The two parties understand that the deal will be highly lucrative, but the structure of the contract is still being ironed out. If the salary cap shrinks due to loss of revenue from COVID-19, the Cowboys will have issues keeping other key players in 2021 if they sign Prescott right now. Of course, Prescott is their most valuable player, so he should be the priority. Expect contract rumors to leak constantly over the next month.

At this point, I wouldn't approach him at all.
Let him prove himself under the new regime.

Resume negotiations in 2021.
same for me. i would be scheming on a draft strategy for QB if i felt Dak wasn't worth what he wants. i like dak, but business is business. if he proves under the new regime that he is worth it , then he gets it.
