How does Patrick Mahomes' mega-deal affect Dak Prescott negotiations? It's complicated

There has been a pattern in recent years in the NFL where the next big quarterback deal tends to be a tad more money than the last one.

This one is likely to bust the charts for a while. But that doesn’t mean it likely won’t have an effect on what Prescott will eventually make.

Yes, it as affected and we will see the effect either before 7-16-2020 or at the end of the 2020 football season (if played).

I guess Jerry Jones hands does cramp up writing checks as he just saw the price of the QB franchise tag go up about $5M and the price of a franchise QB get into the $40M per year range. Jerry Dumbo GM Jones could have got Dak on the cheapest extension contract in the history of sports after the 2017 season before he changed agents. Well you can kiss that goodbye.

Dak has never had a losing season as a starting QB from Jr. High to NFL. Therefore, Dak has a track record of winning which is priority no.1 for a QB looking for a NFL long term contract. Jerry Jones needs to break out his cooper fit compression gloves and write that check.

If Jerry Jones believed DAK was the future he would of signed him in 2017. Let DAK win a Super Bowl or heck let him win a NFC Championship game then pay the man...... Making the playoffs is not the same as bringing home Dallas's 6th Super Bowl trophy....... DAK wants paid like Mahomes.... WIN like Mahomes

So the Cowboys have Dak tagged this year and can tag him next year for what is not completely out of control. Then the media deal is due and the cap climbs a lot (probably). By then on the open market Dak may be able to get $45-50 million per year.

Dak Prescott is on a one year show me deal. The team has the option of doing this again next year if what they see does not convince them to spend the money. Or if they are convinced then they can sign him to a longer term deal. Frankly a three year deal next off season gets them where both sides really want to be, I would imagine.

Everything else is hand wringing and window dressing.
He was on a 1 year show deal last year.

Prescott isn't even in the same league has Mahomes, he's a second/third tier QB, it means nothing.
Who is in the same league of Mahomes? Nobody is the answer. With that said the deal still helps every QB in the NFL that is going to get a new contract moving forward to include Dak. Again it makes Jerry look like a terrible business man not seeing this was going to happen a year ago when we could have had Dak on a very cheap and reasonable contract. We will lose Dak if Jerry doesnt step up immediately.

If we lose Dak, it will be the best thing that could happen, the last thing we need to do is pay an average QB elite money.

Not so sure of that. I would guess that tags are going to drop because the cap will be tied to revenue. Revenue in the NFL is going to drop this next season. Teams are not going to be signing QBs to short term record deals just because they are the next man up for at least the next two years IMO. I would not be surprised to see the tag numbers actually go down. In the case of Dak, his number next year is tied to his tag number this year because if I'm not mistaken, it's a percentage increase. So if he plays on the tag this year and gets tagged again next year, his number is likely around 37. So lets play this out a bit. If the Cowboys decide to move on from Dak, 37 may not be a bad number for teams, just depending. That would likely mean that the Cowboys get some first round compensation for him in a trade. If they don't try and trade him and they simply him, the team is only paying like 37 and then they are in a position to work out a deal where they might be willing to do a 4 year deal because at that point, they probably pay something like 38 AAV over the next 4 years. So you figure, 31+38+38+38+38 divided by 5 gets you to an AAV of 36 and change. That's pretty much where the club wants to be anyway. That's a deal for this team. At this point, I think it's tag, 4 year deal or tag, retag and trade. That's not a terrible situation for the Cowboys, especially under the current situation we are dealing with.

Dak is going to benefit from the Mahomes contract.

Jerry blundered by failing to sign Dak at the first opportunity.

Has he ever won a championship, no. Jerry has 3 superbowl trophies.

Interesting. A football fan whose understanding is equal to that of my grandmother. It's almost as if there are more things going on in a football game, or something.

Bottom line is Dak Prescott is going to get paid, be it by Dallas or someone else. Whether or not some of you can wrap your heads around it is of no consequence.
We pray someone else

He was on a 1 year show deal last year.

And your point? He evidently showed enough to get a second shot.

Plus, you have assembled a team that has a chance to be the best in for ever. Or at least the mid 90's, which is forever for some fans here.

So you just ignore that, dump him and hope you can get a replacement? I don't see the opposition to Dak coming up with a viable answer for what has been spent and how long a rookie would take to mature. Not saying that is your position.

Just sayin'.

Ezekiel Elliott never lost an away game since his first game in high school, until he started playing with Dak.
