Letting Dak go will be the best thing Cowboys can do

I like Dak as I do all our starters. I'd love for us to extend him. But, I think he should be a bit more willing to consider a 5 year deal. I think we can win with Dak, but I'll concede he's not Brees or Mahomes.
That’s fair. The bottomline is are we prepared to let him walk next year over a dispute and start over at QB.

The one area that concerns me is how easy it is to end up with a bust QB. And we all know well the pitfalls of that (see between Aikman and Romo). You can have an excellent team, but a horrendous QB will sink your team. We have an excellent team and coach now, let's see what Dak does. I think he'll do well. I really do. I think he should take the deal though because I don't think he's worth more than $36. I had him around Wentz's money, which it sounds like is what is being offered to him. So I don't think he has any reason to hold out longer.

I hear ya and agree to a point. I’ve largely been a critic but if we are intent on retaining him and if we think we can get it done with Dak then we need to be more flexible.

We had an opportunity to sign him last year probably easily for what we’re offering him this year but we wanted to wait and see. Guess what, it’s going to cost even more next year. Overpaying guys you want to hang in to is part of the business. But not if you aren’t sold on them.

And if we don’t cave in then that’s what this ultimately will be about and we’ll lose him next year or he’ll cost more than we can even imagine now.

No, letting a top 10 QB who is only 27 years old just walk and get nothing for him, is not in the cowboys best interest. Not at all, not even a little bit.

+1 ......You find a way to get a min 1st rd pick. Honestly, I probably would not have said this a few months ago but if he plays on the tag, fine. Let him play the tag year but if we can't get done before the 2021 draft, maybe we should move on.

Exactly, and the QB market is only going to go higher. What Mahomes just got is the tip of the iceberg. I expect Lamar Jackson to go higher with it, for example as I think Josh Allen, Tua, and Burrow when their times come. So, that's where I think we may need to sign Dak to a new contract. I think it's safer to sign him versus drafting a new QB and hoping they turn out to be great QBs and cheaper than the best options next year imo.

Stopped reading at "Giants fan". Your opinion is irrelevant on the Cowboys.

In fairness, @Shunpike usually is a fair fan. I may disagree with him on American football team choices, but I think he has a history of making fair choices, and I'm open to hearing what other fans think as long as it's reasonably presented. I think Shunpike has done just that in this thread. I don't necessarily agree with letting Dak go being the best for us, but I do agree that we shouldn't overpay him. We do need the cap space, and he's not as good as Patrick Mahomes. I think he's a top 10 QB, but not top 5 in the NFL atm in all honesty. I think he's somewhere up with Goff and Wentz. Thus, I think he should be paid around that much, and that's what Slater seems to reckon is the offer. Therefore, I think it's a fair offer. If Dak turns that down, then I think it may be in our best interest to let him go as the QB market is only going to go higher. Apart from anything else, then we'll find it even harder to retain Dak if COVID causes the cap to go down.

drafting a QB in 2021 isnt very smart or appealing at this point. For a multitude of reasons. Dak will sign a long term deal. Mike M wasn't brought in here to conduct a revamp deal at QB. He came here because OF Dak. He is an admirer of his game. He watched film on him for a long time, not so he could be let go next year to the highest bidder, but to win championships with HIM.

He’s a lot better player than he gets credit for. And our OL’s pass blocking is overrated. So is the importance of an all-pro RB. We’ve only really had good WRs one of the three seasons he’s been in the league.

You can win with Dak at the right price, but he seems to want top tier money and he is not worth that.
In order to win with him he will need a great defense, and paying him too much with see to it that that doesnt happen

LOL. How'd Aikman do playing with average defenses that didn't create turnovers, few sacks, and were bad on 3rd down? Give Dak those SB defenses.

The All Pro RB and Offensive line are the focal point of the damn team. Each week the other team comes in knowing they have to stop the all pro rb and the offensive line or they will get run over. Every week. For the FOUR years he has been the starter the goal of the other team was to stop the all pro rb. That is a huge advantage for our offense in the passing game. If you think the all pro rb and o-line are over rated go watch the 2017 stretch without the all pro rb and get back to me on how your under rated qb played, particularly the eagles and chargers games.

its unbelievable reading stuff here. The offensive line has been over rated but the qb under rated! LOL the 2016 offensive line was as good as a line can be.

The way you feel when Dak foolhardily moves on to play for JV AFC team...

Let Dak go, start Dalton for 1-2 years while we draft Dalton's replacement. In the meantime, sign every good defensive free agent you can get with the $40 million per year that Dak would have wanted.

Dalton + strong offense + strong defense
> Dak + strong offense + weak defense.

We already drafted a QB with good potential last draft. But for fans , unless the QB is a high draft pick, they suck.
