The Cowboys have tried to fill the quarterback position since Aikman with free agents and low round picks, what they need to do is invest in a young quarterback out of the draft even if they have to pay the price to move up with draft picks. That's mostly how it's done.

It’s not the Cowboys fault, they were acquiring veteran castoffs who weren’t performing at a high level consistently which is why they were available. Very few veteran FA QBs have amounted to anything anywhere else. Tony Romo is the only FA QB that’s ever amounted to anything with the Cowboys and it’s because they developed him as a rookie. He wasn’t a castoff.

There’s been very few veteran castoff’s that were given up for dead that ended up winning a championship with another team. The three most prominent ones would be Doug Williams, Jim Plunkett and Brad Johnson. Steve Young won a championship after he left Tampa but I don’t consider him a castoff. He was still a young developing QB who had great potential. The same with Brett Favre when Atlanta moved on from him. The recipe for winning a championship has always been to draft a QB and develop them.

The flaw in this is none of these were meant to be a full commitment to a franchise guy. They were all either signed as bridge guys, take a chance on reviving a career guys, developmental guys, or backups. Some were solid for their purpose though.

Jeff Hostetler won a Super Bowl for his original team the Giants. He wasn’t a castoff who was brought in. Nick Foles was drafted by Philly. They moved on from him and he came back but I don’t count him. Trent Dilfer would be one. He started his career with the Buccaneers and won a Super Bowl in Baltimore. In the history of the NFL there’s been very few veteran castoff QBs win Super Bowl’s for another team. The odds are way against you trying to win a championship with a veteran castoff at QB.

Peyton Manning wasn’t left for dead he was still playing at an extremely high level. The Colts only moved on from him because he had a neck injury. Teams don’t lineup to sign a QB who’s been let go due to poor performance. You don’t seem to be following what I’m getting at.

Dalton is the best backup QB Dallas has had since Kitna IMO.

Other pro bowlers with playoff experience like Dalton and the same age 33yrs were Bledsoe and Cassel and they were signed to start not be backups.

Teams usually don't let good young QBs get away so it's not a surprise the Cowboys haven't had a ton of success finding free agent QBs. Sans the dark ages in between Aikman and Romo I don't think QB was valued much especially under Garrett.

Of those I think Bledsoe, Kitna, and Orton were solid signings at the time. We didn't need to rely on Orton much but outside of being lazy he was a capable backup. Kitna was called upon during the 2010 disaster and was pretty decent in place of Romo during a dysfunction season. He posted a better record than Romo that year.

Bledsoe didn't have much left when he came to the Cowboys but had a good first year then fell off. He was a signing the Cowboys needed to make at that time. You do wonder though if he had a subpar 05 if the Cowboys would have pursued Brees the following year?

If you look at the history of most teams success with undrafted FA QBs it’s not good. Sure there’s been a few of these QBs that had success and a couple have ended up in the Hall of Fame but it’s not the recipe for building great consistent teams especially with veteran QBs that have been released. The Cowboys 5 championships came with QBs they drafted.
