When I was a kid, there was not a better burger anywhere. Pure beef. Huge. It was that way for years. Been a while since I had one. Not sure if they have changed or not.
Whataburger is good but it’s overhyped . 5 Guys and several locals blow this franchise out of the water.

But Whataburger is probably best of big chains like McDonalds , Jack and Burger King which isn’t really saying a lot. Lol

Ok, true story...
When I was 10, we took a vacation from Ohio to Texas to visit family. Plano and Houston.

We stopped at a place to rest and eat. I do not know where it was at for sure, can't remember, but it was not Texas.
Got a hamburger. I took the top off to add some mustard. I said, where is the hamburger. Lifted up a few pickles, and said, oh there it is.

We got to Texas, and got a hamburger to eat. I said, dang, did they give me the whole cow. :lmao:
I could not eat all of it. I do not know what the place was, the name of it.

Quite sure you nailed it. It was the best at the time. I've eaten far better burgers at many places. What's that little place off of Hwy 157 at Green Oaks south?

How coincidental. I live in Ohio now and lived in Arlington as a kid. We went to the Rec Center in Meadowbrook Park next to the golf course. We played football on the big expansive lawns just outside the building and ate at Whataburger afterward. Their burgers were seriously bigger than than the competition. Double mustard burger with fries and a coke. What a memory.
Last time I had one was about 10 years ago.

Yep, only close were the Belly Bombs from Krystal.

One thing that has always impressed me about Whataburger and I've eaten at probably 30 different ones when I used to travel Texas, DQ's too and they can be special, are the onions. They're perfect, rarely are they too hot and dominate the burger, just the right balance and I have found that in every one of their restaurants.

Which has made me wonder if they use the technique chefs do to "unheat" an onion. After it is cut, soak it in cold water for just a few minutes, drain and put on paper towels to dry and I can tell you this works like a charm as it is that white stuff that comes out when you're cutting an onion that is the culprit.
Maybe they use sweet Vadalia onions or Walla Walla brand. Less sulfur in the soil they say.

Oh yeah, Al's Hamburgers. Might have been called something else years ago. No, on second look, it was owned by a guy named Al Matthews.

Agree but 5 Guys, Mooya and Smashburger don't really compete with the national ff chains.

Remember when Chili's started up? First, they were a burger restaurant designed to take on The Filling Station and they nailed that big burger and then began to expand the company and the menu, much like one of my old favs from Dallas, Steak & Ale. I read that they were planning on a come back with the original menu but that was before the situation we're in now for restaurants.

Some of the best burgers I've ever eaten were in small towns when I traveled by car a lot. They would put ff burgers to shame. This was back in the late 60's-70's and the Interstates were just beginning to take over and some of those magical diners were losing that traffic and began to die out. It's a shame, it was progress but I loved stopping at those little places and getting treated as if I was a regular and called "hon" when I was lonely on the road.

When I was growing up in Little Rock, my Dad travelled the state of Arkansas every week and sometimes took me on a trip with him in the summer. He had a little black book but not of women, it was a list of the restaurants that he loved and what they specialized in and we'd stop for lunch or dinner and that food was remarkable and some of the most incredible cobblers and pies I'd ever eaten and even to this day they can't match those diners. Here in Marble Falls is the place famous for pies, The Bluebonnet Cafe and they've been around for 90 years, but even those pies, and they are very good, can't hold a candle to those I remember.

Those are seasonal so they can't be using them and they are more expensive than a burger chain would want to spend. They're only available here in Texas for a few weeks out of the year and in short supply.

Really ?? lol they have gone downhill the last decade or so.
I quit eating them about 5 years ago.
That depends on the one you visit. I have one within walking distance from my house that is still amazing. :)

A family owned Texas burger chain that sold out to a Chicago based company, sounds about right.
It's still damn good where I live no matter who owns the company. Different strokes for different folks, right?

We’ve been by that Bluebonnet Cafe a few times but always a waiting line out the door. Must be good.

first off you dont compare a fast food restaurant to more traditional sit down burger joints.. WB is to most the best fast food burger..one of my faves is Twisted root, original chophouse and Toms all in arlington but im not comparing them to a WB..

I only do breakfast there and I don't have to wait more than 5 minutes. I think that line is all about the reputation and a lot of people that long for that old diner feeling.

But I will admit to having pie for breakfast on more than one occasion. They do 3,500 for Thanksgiving and 3,000 for Christmas every year.

I grew up when Whataburger wasn’t considered like the big franchises . Just a small local Texas chain.

I wouldn’t agree “ most” consider Whataburger best. We had a local poll recently and 5 Guys won. In and Out was 2nd, Whataburger 3rd for Franchises. Personally I like WB better than In and Out but it’s not drastically different.

And not sure why you wouldn’t compare them to the local joints which beat out several of the Franchises.
