This is exactly the kind of post that stirs up a bunch of BS. Why even do it? I don't get it.......
BS? lol; you take this forum to serious. They messed up and that is factual when it was reported that Stephen could not believe that a 4 year contract was the sticking point with Dak.

this DLaw extension is supposedly made space room for this year ... vs a tactic that couldve been after the season,.... really can't help but
think this time around it has to be Earl -related.

He can't sign until after the season, but that doesn't mean they don't have a ballpark of what it's going to cost. Heck, they could negotiate it whenever they want, they just can't sign him during the season because of the franchise tag rules.
Correct. They know the Cap is most likely to decrease next year so they need Cap space to sign Dak.

Cause they know it’s going to cost much more than this year.

Yes and no. Restructuring now allows part of the restructure "penalty" to apply this year. So, including 2020, Demarcus Lawrence is now under contract till 2024(voidable year). Since they converted 15 mil into a signing bonus, the spreadable cap hit from that 15 mil is prorated from 2020 to 2024. Or 5 years. So, an additional 3mil cap hit over 5 years.
They do it next year, under same terms, and it's a 3.75mil cap hit over the remaining 4 years. Yes, only 750k difference, but it adds up when you also restructure 2-4 more players. Instead of 750k, you save close to 3-4mil a year of additional hits by spreading the prorated new signing bonus over longer terms.

jmo

The guys they've restructured I'm hoping they still see a long term value in. Cause with Frederick they restructured twice and he retired early biting them a bit in the butt. Same with Romo.

No, I get it. It's just dumb.

No need to " release " Crawford, as he is a Unrestricted Free Agent next year ,.. He's not a starter but yet We made out to charity with him for years
simply because we admire how he carries himself in the locker room ? Geeez

Actually yes, there would be a cap benefit to cutting him now as opposed to just letting him run out his contract.

Here's the math on a simple example.

2020
Salary cap is $100MM
Cowboys salary is $100MM
Player A has a cap hit of $10MM

Assuming all contracts stay the same for the next year and the cap decreases by $10MM, 2021 would look like this:

2021
Salary cap is $90MM
Cowboys salary is now $90MM ($100MM minus the $10MM of Player A whose contract expired)
Cowboys have zero cap space available

However if you had cut player A in the previous year, creating $10MM in cap space then, your cap for the next season wouldn't be $90MM, it would be $100MM, thus creating $10MM in cap space for 2021.

Not till the offseason begins for Dallas.
However, they are freeing up cap now to rollover into 2021 cap space calculations.
Each guy being restructured will cost more over the lifetime of their remaining years(the money being saved now gets distributed equally over the remaining years on deal), but short term it frees up cap space
Thanks for all the replies. Maybe the Cowboys figure the smoothing over of the cap might be rougher than expected. I have a feeling the league will try to keep the cap number the same next year for continuity purposes. Once the new TV contracts kick in the cap difference should spread over the remaining years.. again that is my guess.
Now let's say this Covid thing goes into next fall then the revenue at the gate could be very detrimental to teams cash flows. While the Cowboys bring int he most revenue, it doesn't equate to Jerry taking that money and spending it on players because of the salary cap all teams have to be under.

Didn’t need to sign Jaylon or Zeke. They were both paid early. Not to mention the opportunity cost of not signing Dak while every other notable qb is driving the market up, while the tag(s) are creating an artificial floor / leverage point in negotiations. It’s been bungled at every turn
how did deshaun watson look last night without deandre hopkins? you need the supporting cast? i bet if they asked watson if he wished hopkins was there he'd say yes.

He has value so dont release him. Restructure

So you agree with me............ he's not worth the $9MM cap hit and the Cowboys should, at the very least, lower his cap hit.

No, I get it. It's just dumb.

It's not dumb from a pure math perspective. It would be actually worse for future caps to wait until next year to create the space.

Now maybe restructuring in theory is dumb but the Cowboys, and other teams, have no real choice at this point unless you are OK with them just cutting guys next year (and that would include cutting some pretty good players).

Hey, @PAPPYDOG , remember to keep your promise!

You said you would stay away from here for 1 whole year if Dak is signed to a big longterm contract.

Looks like the Cowboys are making salary cap room to sign Dak by season's end.

Hope you enjoy your 1 year vacation from the CZ boards next year? We're going to miss you!!!......

NOT! :D:p:laugh:

He can't sign a contract by year end. Per tag rules he can only sign a new deal after the season ends.

They are creating space to handle the 2021 cap year, which yes, would include whatever they decide to do with Dak.

restructurings only hurt if the player gets injured and can no longer play. then it's a disaster called dead money. as long as the player restructured is playing at a reasonably high level, no harm, no foul. but if you let them go like ware or romo and are stuck with their dead money, you're screwed.

Yep . Jerry even noted as such in this report 2 weeks after deadline. My hunch is Jerry will make sure a deal gets done next year.

“Jones admitted the biggest holdup was over the length of the deal. The Cowboys wanted five years, as they've given most of their star players in the past. Dak's camp preferred a four-year pact in order to become a free agent sooner.”

Most of the Reports you refer to came from DMN which we aren’t allowed to link in this forum.
