Gotta Say, I don't love the new 42 look on Defense

I absolutely hate what I saw on Sunday from this against the Rams. We really got pushed around, right up the middle against the Rams. I hate this 42 look we are running.

We got abused in that first series against the Rams. They pushed us all over the field. In the second series, we changed it up a little bit and were able to defense things a little bit better against the run but still not good enough. Smith, he looked horrible. If he can't improve on his ability to play against the run, we are going to get torched this year. Really, really poor against the run, Jaylon Smith.

Rams countered with 3 TE sets. Interesting to see how they set us up lining up tight and then fanning out and creating lanes. We have terrible discipline here. We should really be better with 5 DBs on the field, defensing quick screens, bubbles and flares. Any stretch to the outside etc. but we aren't. We get sucked in to these tight formations and get out of our lanes, creating hugh areas where nobody is covering. Tailor made for a QB who can set up quickly, find the soft zone and deliver the ball quickly and accurately. That's Goff every day.

Is it best for them to run a 3-4 defense with in essence a 5-2 hybrid?

Obviously I am not a defensive expert but just trying to figure out how Dallas can get the right players on the field in a defensive scheme to allow for some flex pass rushing without compromising run defense.

I guess I figured with the above defense it allows both Griffen and A. Smith to jump in on the DL to in essence form a 5-2 scheme.

Not using that as an excuse. As they did look like the same old Swiss cheese defense. They settled down some after that 1st drive or 2. But still was not enough.
Waiting for adjustments in the next game. It will take 4 to 6 games, maybe even 8 to get it to. where they want it.

20 points to a very good Rams offense that was not going through any major changes. For the 1st game, not a total disaster.

I don't know about that. Really hard to install an new defense with no real Off Season or Pre-season. I don't know who came up with the idea that Pre-Season is not really needed but those guys, stupid. It's pretty clear to me that we were not recognizing and reacting quickly enough. This looks like a reps thing, except for Smith, who was just plain bad in this game. I don't know what we are going to do at LB. That's a real issue with LVE out and Smith seemingly lost. IDK.

Plain and simple that our Offense should have put up way more than 17 points. No getting 3 and the tie was a dumb move. Elliot should have 25 rushes per game. And the refs need to let the WR and corners play. That was a ticky tack call all day.

they gave up 7 points in the 2nd half and led at the half and picked off Goff... yes they gave up too much TOP and yards but the offense was more to blame i mean 17 doesnt cut it..

We saw the pats handle the rams perfectly running a 5-2 look in the SB. Why we didn't do the same thing after they ran roughshod on us in the same playoffs. We ran a 4-2 look all game then too. I swear coaching in the nfl is just bad.

A big part of what I saw in first half was Crawford starting at DT even though he has the build of a DE. I’m tired of seeing him tbh. I feel they trusted him due to being a vet and maybe the conditioning of the bigger guys. But I would rather see Hill, Poe, Gallimore and woods taking all those snaps even if it’s just for stopping the run.

not sure whats "new" about the defense.

Looked like a lot of cover 2/2 man looks before the snap. A lot of off man coverage. And we are still playing a lot of 4-2-5.

I guess thats new.
