I tend to believe it. I remember listening to Ex Raven Bart Scott on his show around 4 years ago or so. He went on and on about how basically so many of the modern NFL players are so stupid that you have to keep modern defenses so simple or everything falls to pieces in short order.
He really hammered home the point,....said he was appalled at what he was seeing on defense in the modern NFL. I wasnt a big fan of the Nolan hire to begin with and this is just one of the reasons why. You have to walk before you can run and he's expecting a bunch of mental paraplegics to run the 40 yard dash! :D

As you can see........It doesnt work.

Been watching the NFL since 1974. IMO the league is so degraded now that its an unwatchable mess. The difference just between 90's football and this fiasco we watch today is dramatic. NOT talking just the Cowboys either,....Im talking league wide.

They truly need to go back to the base 4-3 defense.

When Tom Landry developed his Flex Defense, it was said, it was very hard to learn. And it took about 3 years for the players to truly grasp its entirety.
I think this is where Tom's 3 year rule came in effect. They were going to get it or not.

Nolan's stupid Hybrid plan kind of reminds me of this. Back when Tom coached, they had the players rights forever, so a player could have time to learn and stay. Now, a team can't do this, as half the players move on by year 4. Has nothing to do with if the are smart or dumb or in between. It has to do with time.

Crap can the stupid concept and / or crap can Nolan if he can't or won't change.

Something needs to be done about it because like you said, it ain't working.

Those NE Defenses and others use more advanced schemes and their coaches seem to relay that into something they can swallow. It does take some knowledge on who you're drafting.

Players who are illiterates can still be football smart but I can see Bart Scott's point too. Takes some foundation to receive/process info quickly.

It also "didn't work" for at least the last three years that Nolan was a defensive coordinator in Atlanta. His defenses were consistently at the bottom of the league. And he's brought that here. I'm nit making excuses for loafing players and their mistakes, but at least some of them have a track record of being good at points in their careers. They didn't all just suddenly quit or forget how to play.

The previous scheme was paint-by-numbers basic, and that wasn't any good either. But what Nolan is expecting to do - with no offseason and a bunch of new pieces - is even worse.

Defense may improve a little this year,....but nothing major IMO. Im just hoping someone like Fangio in Denver or Zimmer in Minni gets fired after this season and we scoop one of them up. Defense would get fixed in short order. Zimmer would be the easier fit and he would do fine,.....but in truth,...Fangio is far superior. IMO he is the NFL's best with a long track record of superior defenses.

it took years for other teams to figure out how to beat the flex. just throw on first down. then after everyone figured it out, tom never figured out how to adjust to what others were doing to beat his brain child. biggest issue is, to me, we just lack the talent. particularly on the defensive side of the ball. football isn't hard. cooper figured out our offense in just one week in 2018. gallup figured it out quickly. lambo seems to have it figured out. schultz, when finally given an opportunity, figured it out.

Honestly? I don't think ANY personnel "match this scheme". It does NOTHING WELL.
That's possibly true too....I'm not even sure how we sit here with Nolan as our DC after what he did in Atlanta......Maybe Jerry and co. should've hired the DC too.

i agree. good coaches come up with schemes that augment the talent they have on the field. they don't design a system and tell everyone to adjust to it. he's not looking too good in my opinion.

So why does Nolan keep getting hired? He was even a HC for a time!

I'm already questioning why McCarthy hired him. I know that they're friends and there's a sense of loyalty, but qualifications have to come first.

In researching McCarthy, it was clear that he did struggle to field a good defense, and finding Capers is what helped him ultimately win a Super Bowl, until the league figured out Capers defense.

So why does Nolan keep getting hired? He was even a HC for a time!

He is a well respected coach and is considered knowledgeable. The thing is, they need talent, his schemes need talent. Obvious once again this talent is vastly over rated.
Most coaches need talented players, or a good part of the team needs to be. Take away talent, and even Bellicheat can't even win.
Yes schemes and systems mean a lot as well, but once figured out, then you still need better players.

Some teams just get hot and get lucky. Such as when GB wins with injuries, as well as the Eagles did also. GB has AR, Eagles just hit lightning in a bottle.
NY had 2 very fortuitous plays in 2 different SB's that helped them.

I would love for us to have this happen, and if someone wants to call us extremely lucky, go right ahead. I will still take the SB win. :D

This is a very good breakdown of how Belichick shut down Mcvay's offense in the superbowl. It doesn't appear to me that it takes a unit full of rocket scientists to play in this simple but brilliant scheme.

Not at all, especially under the offseason constraints. That forces you to keep things as simple and basic as possible, until everyone can get better adjusted during the season. And for a staff that was stressing 'players over scheme', that's not what's happening at all. Ditch your trash scheme and work on getting your fundamentals right.
