The plan is and always has been to build the team with a part-time GM with ultimate job security. A full time GM, without that job security, must constantly monitor the plan, as it might need modification or a complete change, and filter every move through that plan. The Niners had some curves thrown at their plan but it looks like they were not caught flat footed.
The team's management is just like the team strategy, counter puncher. They wait for something to happen to respond.
Does anyone here think the plan going into the draft was to take a WR with that 1st pick? Oh, I hear ya, can't pass up a player like that falling into your lap but other full time GM's did just that and stuck to their plan. Their plan was to make their team better, not get attaboys for snagging a falling player.
There is no grand plan, it's a year to year let's wait and see what we need to do and let's take these one at a time instead of weighing them against the overall effect on the cap and ability to change.
If you put any faith in the lucky sperm's responses, the plan is to wait until the players get this defense. The plan is to let time fix their problems.
The problem with not having a plan is you're not ready to respond when your plan is not working. Part of planning is the anticipation that there could be problems with your plan. Every plan should have some Murphy's Law built into it. Ole Murphy likes the best laid plans of mice and men.
