Does this front office have a plan?

The plan is and always has been to build the team with a part-time GM with ultimate job security. A full time GM, without that job security, must constantly monitor the plan, as it might need modification or a complete change, and filter every move through that plan. The Niners had some curves thrown at their plan but it looks like they were not caught flat footed.

The team's management is just like the team strategy, counter puncher. They wait for something to happen to respond.

Does anyone here think the plan going into the draft was to take a WR with that 1st pick? Oh, I hear ya, can't pass up a player like that falling into your lap but other full time GM's did just that and stuck to their plan. Their plan was to make their team better, not get attaboys for snagging a falling player.

There is no grand plan, it's a year to year let's wait and see what we need to do and let's take these one at a time instead of weighing them against the overall effect on the cap and ability to change.

If you put any faith in the lucky sperm's responses, the plan is to wait until the players get this defense. The plan is to let time fix their problems.

The problem with not having a plan is you're not ready to respond when your plan is not working. Part of planning is the anticipation that there could be problems with your plan. Every plan should have some Murphy's Law built into it. Ole Murphy likes the best laid plans of mice and men.

So true. Jerry and Stephen manage this team like a fan would.

Reading our forum on a daily basis, there’s no shortage of fan opinions about how to fix this team. And it usually aligns with what Jerry has tended to do over the years: React to obvious holes instead of establishing a plan for what kind of team you’re trying to be and then draft and sign people accordingly. Good leaders have a proactive plan, then is prepared for worst case scenarios. I don’t even think the Jones boys are capable of that.

Jerry’s front office is always run like a fantasy football team. And worse, as you pointed out Coach, he doesn’t even do the “GM thing” full time. He’s too busy negotiating the next big money making deal, or setting up the next big concert, boxing match or tractor pull at his beloved “stayjum”. It’s pathetic.

There are some old sayings about planning and leadership that apply to the Cowboys these days- “When things don’t go as planned, you find out the quality of your leaders”, and “The best leaders are the ones prepared for both good times and bad.”

It’s always easier when the plans you’ve made work. But what do your leaders do when the plan doesn’t work? Or even worse- What if your leaders never had a plan to begin with?

After watching 4 games with this 2020 Cowboys team, it’s obvious things haven’t gone as planned. But I have some questions:
  • What is this team built to be?
  • What is the plan now?
Thoughts/questions about what this team is built to be NOW:
  • The 2016-2019 teams were seemingly built around the offensive line and the running game’s ability to control the tempo of the game with Zeke and the defense’s ability to bend but not break.
  • In those days, Dak’s role was to be an efficient passer who doesn’t turn the ball over. But we don’t have a dominant offensive line anymore. Zeke is a very good RB, but he doesn’t look as explosive as his early days.
  • Travis Frederick’s retirement has had a big impact on the OL.
  • Is this year’s team supposed to be a pass dominant team now?
  • Did the FO drop the ball in the offseason planning for this defense? Haha Clinton-Dix was signed in the offseason and couldn’t even make the roster. Dontari Poe seems like a shadow of what he used to be. Gerald McCoy was injured before pads were put on.
  • Now what?
So what is this FO’s plan to right this sinking ship? Here’s another old saying that applies- “Hope is not a strategy”, although with Jerry and Stephen Jones, that always seems to be the plan- hope things work out. And if they don’t, find someone else to blame for their own failings.

What do you think is the plan this year? Is there a plan?
they had the mike tyson plan, bob. then the players got punched in the mouth. no fight in these dogs. imagine if tank played with the fury with which he tells the fans where to go.

Ksboys originally coined the phrase on the old forum years ago” Jerry runs Cowboys Football thru the eyes of a fan”. An accurate depiction even before fantasy football.

And Coach has also characterized Jethro as a “ follow the ball GM”. Another great characterization.

KSboys also has said” Jerry still believes it was the Triplets who won those championships “. Never giving enough credit to those defenses.

These are some of the best descriptions. But most of all he doesn’t really care enough to remove himself. And we the fans have never forced his hand and doesn’t look like we will. He provides just enough spark to keep us hanging on the street corner like junkies waiting on our next fix. And the first good taste we’ll be hailing him how things are looking up.

I did all I could years ago to warn everyone. And was bashed for it. It is what it is. It’s never too late to do the right thing.

Jerry and Stephen aren't "football guys." Football guys create teams with a idea of direction.

The Cowboys haven't had any plan for the last 25 years and counting. It's all done willy-nilly.

Gone are the days of having a competent GM, like we had during the reign of Tex Schramm.

There's no way Jerry tolerates having someone of his ilk around. Jerry needs his recognition.

...when JG was at the helm, it was all hope. Lets see what type of influence MM has. If Jerry wants to win, he'll listen and advocate what plan could be better.

1) make money
2) continue to market/sell the brand
3) place the brand in the news/ sports cycle no matter what that news is - remember any mention of the brand is good whether it be positive or negative.
4) repeat 1-3

the football plan falls way down the list, if at all
The first words out of Jerry's mouth for the Training Camp press conference was about fans in the stands. Jerry is about the $.

Cowboys are a family business and business is good. They already won...no biggie if they don't make the playoffs, still the #1 franchise in sports.

Hard to fully evaluate this team given all the injuries. But extremely disappointed the FA signings on defense.

Annoying that we beat the Falcons now looking back.

If we were 0-4 would we tank? Start Dalton, try to trade Prescott and blow it all up. Start all over keeping Lamb and not many other players. Trade away any other assets.

1. Hire a coach people think is a big name but still lets you play Football GM
1a. Tell him that your own version of Sean McVay will call plays
2. Have a great draft
3. Sign free agent "names" people have heard of.
4. Sees some media people picking Cowboys to play Chiefs in Super Bowl, start celebrating your assumed success

5. Fail miserably

They are stupid when it comes to football
Nope they know better.. In 2013 they recognized where they needed to invest resources and decided to restore the Oline. They did this with drafting and coaching and the oline and ball contol became our identity. So they shown the ability to build this team in the right direction in the last decade. We just have to hpw they can do it again.

Yes they do. They're planning what color to make the airplane tow banner than says "Thanks suckers for helping Jerry Jones make another Billion." to be flown in a circuit over the stajum.

I appreciate the time you put in to crafting this post.

No offense, but most of the questions you ask don't appear to have answers.
