Basically what I’ve been saying.. Dalton will get us Dak like results and he doesn’t need 40 million to do it.

I've been thinking along those lines for a while now -- let's see if that holds up, from here on. There's plenty of games left to tell. ;)

Yes, Dak is good enough in his own right but does the Dallas FO have him rated just a bit higher than is warranted? We'll soon see.

we all can admit Daks better but how much better? its very true the gaps not as large as fans want to argue.. we have 11 games to prove this out and only have 4 to compare as far as the 2020 team is concerned as Dalton will virtually be playing with the same players and coaches ..

these arguments are best left after game 16 is final..a lot of answers will be right in front of us..

Hmmm.....tell Jerry and Stephen that. They're paying one $3M and the other one $31M but there's not a wide gap.

I've said functionally, Dalton will be fine......for now, as in this year. But give me Dak long-term coz we're getting a high-level player who locks down the most important position for the next 7-8 years. Turning this team over to Dalton, risk starting over or resetting the position within the next 3 years.

And BTW......IF Dalton comes even close to forcing a decision or closing the gap, it means he would have had a hell of a year, as in Super Bowl appearance. Who you think will now ALSO be asking for $35M plus.

Thats correct we will get to see what the diference is, if it's little to none then why would the FO not re evaluate the Dak contract....if this thing goes to hell in a hand basket (I mean even farther than the defense already had it going) then Dak might be better than some on here thought.

There are questions for me about whether Dalton can perform better than the norm for his career with the players we have. We get to see that directly. We've got evidence this season of Dak's play with the current lineup (and limited evidence on Dalton after he had to step in).

However, Dalton as a quarterback has had only a couple of above-average seasons (90-plus) while Dak has had only one average season, with the rest above average. We get to find out if it's the circumstances or the player that is responsible for that. If Dalton has his best or one of his best seasons, then it's the circumstances (and how we move forward from that should be based on that). If he finishes with another year in the 80s, then it's the quarterback (and it would confirm what many believe about Dak and that the front office should pay him accordingly).

It's a better litmus test than 2015, when Romo was lost to injury and the backups were so bad that it was clear how much Romo meant to this team. With a better backup option, maybe it wouldn't have been quite as clear or possibly it would have elevated Romo even more if a quality quarterback couldn't have similar success.

Yes I think most are not getting this, if he keeps this offense at #1 he is going to ask for some real money...and he will get it from someone..

Daks injury sickened me. I am glad though, that we have Dalton. I suspect there's some validity towards what your saying but I can also see Dalton crumbling under constant pressure. I truly am intrigued to see how he performs, and it should go a long ways towards or against Dak regarding his next contract.

For a long time I've argued Dak needs to separate and prove he is not just the product of a loaded offense, but the engine that drives it.

This year when our oline and run game fell apart Dak was showing he can step up. It didn't translate to wins, but it showed me he is likely better than given credit for.

Now that he is gone and Dalton comes in we get a unique opportunity to see just how much of a difference maker Dak has or hasn't become.

lol.. We will be lucky to win 8 games.. This team is terrible.

If it were up to me we would lose every game the rest of the year but the downside to that is Dak has all the leverage even though we were terrible with him.
Not sure about Daks leverage.

That was a nasty injury and he has A LOT of rehab ahead. If he has any setbacks..what happens?

The FO has to place it's chips to decide if it can afford to bet the house on Dak. I would think they will not.

Just look at Alex Smith. He has been out a longtime now with his injury. It was a bit more than Dak's but you can not assume Dak just returns to where he left off.

Do you still just go ahead and pay Dak his big contract not knowing if he returns to form? I can not see that. Tag him again and see what happens but if Dalton leaves then you better get DiNucci ready quickly.

Actually, we came close with Kyle Orton.......

Dallas Cowboys[edit]
On March 14, 2012, Orton signed a three-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys to replace former backup quarterback Jon Kitna, who retired after the Cowboys' 2011 season. In week 4 against the Bears, his former team, Orton replaced Tony Romo late in the game and threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jason Witten, though the Bears still won the contest 34–18. The Cowboys went on to finish the season 8–8, losing to the Washington Commanders in a do-or-die week 17 contest.[32]

In the 2013 season, Orton had seen minimal time on the field with a total of 40 passing yards which all came during week 14 against the Chicago Bears. On December 27, 2013, head coach Jason Garrett announced that Orton would be the starting quarterback for the week 17 game against the Philadelphia Eagles after Tony Romo underwent back surgery.[33] He threw for 30 completions and 358 yards on 46 attempts (65.2%) and two touchdowns. He threw an early interception by Mychal Kendricks which was dropped by his tight end Jason Witten, and another interception by Brandon Boykin on the Cowboys' last drive which secured a 24–22 victory for the Eagles.

Buffalo Bills[edit]

Orton during the 2014 season.
Prior to the 2014 NFL season, Orton threatened the Cowboys with a possible retirement and did not report to any of the team's organized team activities or workouts. Besides accumulating $70,000 in fines, quarterback coach Wade Wilson reported that Orton did not maintain any communications with the Cowboys during this period.[34] Orton, who risked losing part of his signing bonus by holding out, eventually showed up to training camp. The team released him on July 15 and promoted Brandon Weeden to the backup quarterback position.[35] The Cowboys were relieved of Orton's $3.25 million salary in 2014, but still had to pay him a signing bonus.[36] He would follow Jeremiah Ratliff as the second player in two straight years to force the Cowboys to waive him
