Interesting interview with Charles Haley on the Michael Irvin Podcast today. As you would expect with Mike quite a bit of nonsense but when they talked about the Cowboys in depth, Haley had some very strong views including:

1) It's not the coaches, it's the players they are gutless.
2) D Law is no leader
3) Jaylon has not recovered from his foot injury
4) Dalton was a poor signing and has never shown he can handle the spotlight.
5) Recounted a bizarre story from last season when a Cowboys coach on DEF tried to explain to a player (who I think is still on the team) what he needed to improve and the player just walked out of the room.
6) Thinks nothing can be done for this season, need a complete overhaul of personnel

He then had some critical comments to say about Tom Brady and when he was with the Patriots organisation.

Well worth a listen

OK Dalton shouldn't have been signed? Who would Haley have signed? I mean we are talking about a backup QB here. Good ones don't grow on trees.

And I don't believe the problem is just all the players on defense. We have enough evidence to conclude Nolan is a problem too. The defense needs an overhaul for sure but if Nolan is the one helping reshape the defense, we are FUBAR'd.

Got a feeling I know who the player was in #5. Most of this boils down to Jerry's rotten country club culture.

Funnily enough, didn't criticise the coaches at any point. Quite clearly implied where the buck stops

they need to start outing these players. Won’t be so fun when you’re name is put on blast while you’re looking for another job. These players need to learn their place. While I’m sure the rules are tiring, and their bodies hurt, it is an extreme blessing to be able to make so much money and play in the NFL. What a disgusting attitude. Jerry needs to blow this defense up.

Quit reading right there...
Dalton was brought in to backup Dak, that is one of the most durable QBs in this league,, Dalton wasnt brought in here to ever replace Dak.
Dalton will still prove to be one of the best BU QBs in this league when its all said and done.

I still consider Haley to be a Niner but he nailed it. This is the worst group of defensive players I've ever seen where a cowboy uniform. The attitudes , lack of hustle, lack of pride.......its astonishing. I hope Jerry cleans house. We could literally cut every single one of those players , start over with 11 new starters. and not be any worse.

No, it wouldn't.
Jerry actually calls Mike and Emmett.
He has likely not spoken to Roger more than a couple times in his life.

But this isn't a Jerry driven show anyway.
His son has been in charge for a few years and Will McClay is the GM.
Jerry is the figurehead. If/when he passes I fully expect nothing changes.

The Cowboys made a great Head Coaching hire.
It may not work out but given the coaches they had to choose form they got their guy.
Most teams hit this hard by injuries would suck and Dallas does.
Good news is you do find out who fights for the team and who needs to move on.
Mike and Emmett might have closer relationships with Jerry, but they don't have the cachet that Roger has with Cowboys fans and the Dallas business community. If he spoke up it would send shockwaves at The Star. Frankly, I'm a little disappointed he hasn't publically voiced his displeasure with what has happened to this franchise. I know he's a kind, private person, but we're approaching 30 years now of wandering in the desert with dumb and dumber.

Then it's hard to take what he says seriously. A team this bad that has looked this awful, even with personnel issues, also has some coaching issues. Again, that's not a defense of the players but to conclude that our awfulness is all players and nothing is on the coaching is just kind of ridiculous to me.

Haley has crafted a career and image out of being a tough as nails player who tore into teammates if they weren't performing like he wants. That's carried over to his post football career where he often just rails on the players for not playing like he would want. He often avoided criticizing Garrett for a time too even when it was becoming obvious coaching was a problem in Dallas.

One other point he said was that from his box he shouted abuse down at members of the DL, I assume at the Cardinals game. As he said this group of players are the last ones on the field and first ones off at the end of the game.

Leave it to Charles Haley to tell it as it really is.

Exactly ........I said in another thread, we may have to keep DLaw and Jaylon Smith ( contract reasons) but sure as hell doesn't mean they will be 2021 starters. I'm getting them some competition and make earn their starting job next season.
Jaylon should be a SAM. On this team that player only plays like 33% of the snaps.
But Jaylon in that role would actually make big plays.
DLaw is still your best DL BY FAR, but he's struggled with injuries his entire career just playing through many of them to varying degrees of success.
What players make is meaningless to me.
Just put the best players in position to make plays.

I'd call Wade Phillips to come coach this defense the rest of the year.
He was a simple, maximize his guys coach and he will use the system they know best to make it easiest for them.
Teams will learn what it takes to pick on that system but as a stop gap we'd see a huge lift IMHO.

DAL paid Jaylon and used an R1 on LVE.
The LB situation is pretty dire.
They gotta figure out a plan there to move forward.

Pretty much what I've said.......can't do anything now. But after the season......blow up the entire D ( except Hill, Diggs and LVE ) and rebuild it. Frankly, I expect MM to do just that. Would not surprise me at all to see a min 6-7 new starters on this D for 2021.
Let’s hope they slowly start the process while in season. See what you can get at the trade deadline for Griffen, Poe, Crawford, Lewis. Most likely no takers. Then just cut them. I’d rather see Anae, Armstrong, Gregory get the majority of snaps on the Edge. Hamilton Gallimore and Woods inside. I have hopes Awuzie can contribute the second half of the season - I recall in August he was at least excited about the changes in scheme. Then come off-season, take the salary cap hits and release Lawrence and Jaylon. They’re not the “right kind of guys”.

The first words he uttered almost
Amazing

I wish he was coaching. If a coach told me I was garbage, I would prove him wrong.

Get the feeling that this org does everything it possibly can to avoid hurting their player's feelings.
