Greatness Perspective: CeeDee passes Bullet

You may have missed this interesting stat yesterday: Cedee Lamb passed the great Bullet Bob Hayes’ 55 year team record with the most receptions by a rookie WR- the old record being 46. Cedee now has 48. And he did it in just 10 games. This is rare air Mr. Lamb has entered.

But I also want to take a moment to put Bob Hayes’ greatness in perspective. In his 1965 rookie year, Bullet had 46 receptions for 1,003 yards, averaging a whopping 21.8 yards per reception, and had 12 receiving TDs plus a rushing TD in 13 games. This was done during an era when the passing game was not the dominant force it is today. Hayes also averaged nearly 13 yards per punt return that year. And his amazing speed produced 76 receiving TDs in his HOF career, including 5 TDs over 80 yards! And, he averaged 20 yards a reception...for his career!

Hats off to Cedee Lamb. And I’m happy to say that I was wrong about what he would accomplish this year. I had him catching about 40 passes in 16 games. I was wrong.

How lucky were the cowboys to have lambo fall to us in the draft. Seems this draft class of top wr's has been outstanding. I'm biased, but i think we got the best of the lot.

I can’t remember if I made a prediction for Lamb this year or not... but if I did it was a significant number because I had big expectations for that kid. Even though I had high hopes for him, he’s exceeding my expectations.

The guy is going to be a great, great player for a long time.

CeeDee Lamb is a lion among men. The man can ball. If the O-line can hold up Thursday I expect CeeDee to go off against the blitzes. He will dominate on Thanksgiving. Pass old NO 7 and pass the turkey leg. A feast is coming.

Ceedee is going to be an elite receiver in a year or two, IMO.
He's already a stud. His game leads me to think he will be a high volume player (85-100 catches a year).
Another question, though, is; do you keep him primarily in the slot where he has excelled, or do you eventually move him out wide?

Also, you have to keep in mind that there is significantly more passing today then there was in that era. In the 65 season, the Cowboys only had 362 attempts for the entire season. As of last Sunday, 20 team has already attempted 422 passes and we are only through 10 games. Who knows what Bob Hayes could have done had he played in today's offense?

lets not pull out the anointing oil , its all there in your statement, 21YPC is unheard of m=no way CEEdEE is on his level..YPC, total Yards and Tds matter far more then how many receptions..

But yes great job kid even despite having Dak, dalton, Nooch, and Gilbert throwing to you..

Right. He hasn’t earned what Bullet did yet. Nice start though.

He could do either, but I think he’s currently best in the slot.

I'm old enough to have watched Bullet Bob. Folks don't see to remember he wasn't a little guy. Talking 6 foot 1". Never ever ran that 40 because they didn't do that back then. Talk about a burst, once he hit a seem he was indeed like a bullet.

Given the differences in eras and how the game is played, I’d still say Hayes has had the more impressive rookie campaign.

in 2020 what lamb is doing shouldn’t be dismissed, but it certainly isn’t uncommon. Scary to think what his numbers would look like had dak never gone down with injury. It just seems that WR is turning into what the RB started to become a decade ago....devalued and over saturated with talent.

I think the era in which a player plays has a lot to do with the stats. Cedee Lamb is GREAT and will continue to get better. But in the 60's, there was none better than Bob Hayes.

I assumed he would have something similar to what Cobb had last year (55 receptions, 828 yards, 3 TDs) but it appears he will surpass that. He's on pace for 77 receptions, 1,006 yards, 6 TDs. If he can do that he will have made a significant rookie contribution, especially considering the team as Cooper and Gallup as well.

They changed the way they ran defenses because of Hayes. I hope the same for Lamb.

I don't know - he certainly would have to become a much more well rounded receiver today. When he came into the league he was dominate because zone coverage didn't exist and he could out run everyone. Team's eventually developed zone coverages specifically to help deal with Hayes, and of course there are complex coverage schemes today, so it's a little harder to beat coverage just by being faster than everyone else.

Metcalf is in his second season, but yeah, you’re right, this year has been unreal for the rookie wideouts.

The big 3 rookies have been Lamb, Jefferson, and Claypool. Ruggs and Jeudy aren’t far behind.
