I like him as well. Not sure if Atl keeps him in some capacity though. Guy has been one of their only bright spots in a disappointing season
Yea, I think it's possible he stays as HC, but I can't imagine he stays there as a DC after being the interim HC. That would be a really awkward dynamic I think.

i'd bring in parcells as a consultant to assist in the decision making process.

It's absolutely going to be #1.

McCarthy doesn't want to fire any more of his friends and Edwards is the path of least resistance. Jerry will also call Zimmer and Zimmer will recommend him.

If you bring in a guy like Fangio or Wade, they will probably want to bring in their secondary coach, DL coach, or LB coach which means McCarthy will have to fire more of his buddies.
That was my original thought process, but since Edwards has been here, he's part of the problem.

I'm not discounting his experience but let's not bring in Wade Phillips.

He said some things as head coach that would concern me if he were DC.

Not the culture or vibe I would want in Dallas.
Remember he ok'd that special teams draft. Can't have another Marinelli given power choosing terrible players that set the team back.

My top 3
1) Fangio (won't be available)
2) Patricia
3) Wade

I'm not sure what Quinn, Richard and Smith are doing on the list.

I hope McCarthy gets to choose.
You want more of a hybrid scheme, those coaches would fit if they run more of a traditional 4-3 that we ran under Marinelli.

1-George Edwards- Does nothing for me.
2-Marvin Lewis-Good guy, professional. Doesn't move the needle though.
3-Vic Fangio- Very good DC, 3-4 guy.
4-Matt Patrica-Also a 3-4 guy. My guess is he goes back to New England.
5-Dan Quinn- No, no, no, no
6-Wade Phillips- Ehhhh
7-Iowa State Coach - Matt Campbell? Is Fisher dumb? One, he'll be an NFL HC or a major college HC soon. Two, he's an offensive guy. Like one of the better offensive guys around. Does he mean Iowa State DC Jon Heacock? 35 years of college coaching, no NFL experience. Would be interesting.
8-Kris Richard - Really?
9-Rahiem Morris- If he doesn't get Atlanta HC job this is a sneaky good choice.
10-Lovie Smith - Better DC than HC, gets the most out of his players (as a DC).

The correct answer is Gus Bradley.

Thoughts about some of the candidates:

-Edwards-originally thought be would be the #1 target, but he has to take some of the blame being here. He also was more of a game planner under Zimmer and never called the defense.

-Marvin Lewis-he is my #1 choice as he has run the 4-3, 3-4 and a hybrid scheme. Will have the ability to bring in a quality staff and is firmiliar with the college prospects.

-Fangio-excellent 3-4 coordinator, but I don't see him getting fired after this season.

-Wade-thought his defenses here were solid, but he ok'd that special teams draft that set this team back. He cannot have another DC choosing bad players like Marinelli.

-Patricia-runs a hybrid scheme, but want no part of him. His defense in Detroit was worse then when he took over. Lions, just like the Cowboys were having similar issues stopping the run.

-Lovie/Quinn/Richard-rather move away from the simplistic defense based on execution.

I think it’ll be pick #1, don’t want to start completely over. We don’t want to hear that the defense needs another full season to figure out how to play again.

Just saw a podcast with Mike Fisher speculating the top DC's to replace Mike Nolan with:

1-George Edwards-believes he is the heavy favorite as Jerry with call Zimmer about him.
2-Marvin Lewis-found out there is a Pitt connection with him and MM, both on the staff together in the 90's
3-Vic Fangio-Fisher said he wanted him to interview for the GB DC job in the past.
4-Matt Patrica-he runs a similar hybrid scheme that MM likes
5-Dan Quinn-from the Seattle coaching tree, similar to the Marinelli Defense
6-Wade Phillips-connection with the Jones Family, former HC. 3-4 DC
7-Iowa State Coach
8-Kris Richard
9-Rahiem Morris-interim HC with Atlanta
10-Lovie Smith-runs the Tampa 2, Marinelli was his DC with Chicago

Bonus-Sean Lee
Give me Edwards, if we will truly be a 4 man DLine and more importantly, a one gap scheme that suits our DTs and DEs to play fast and aggressive. Please no more 2 gap system of read and react.........that doesn't fit our personel.

They have to make that determination, own it and build it for the future.

I would take either but probably prefer Marvin Lewis. I don't blame Edwards for the problems this year because A) a lot of it is on the pandemic and the players not getting the reps to put in the new scheme and B) The Scheme. I think Edwards is making tactical decisions in a bad scheme right now, while the scheme is the responsibility of the DC. If the strategy is bad, its a lost cause from the start.

You can bring in the greatest defensive coordinator who ever lived and it would make no difference. It is the players. Too many times the players don't know their responsibility, are just freelancing, or are making business decision tackles. Too many players are just weak both mentally and physically.

Too many players cannot even fill their gaps. Too many players do not even know if they are playing man or zone. A defensive coordinator can't even dumb down a system for many of the current players. Even the perfect defensive call gets washed out because some knucklehead is afraid to tackle and is ankle grabbing. As a GM of another team, ask yourself who would you try to trade for on the Cowboys' defense.

The only players worth keeping are (in order): Diggs, LVE, Gregory, Gallimore, Aldon Smith, Brown, Lewis(serviceable), and Lawrence (begrudgingly since he is way overpaid for his little production).
Possible upside players worth keeping: Anae, Carter, Hamilton, Bernard, and Reggie Robinson (McClay's pet cat being the only reason).

Good luck trying to build a defense around those players.

Edwards certainly will be in the running for the job. Think MM is going to try to convince Jerry/Stephen that we need more of a diverse scheme then what we have played in under Marinelli. Not sure how much difference Edwards scheme is compared to the one Marinelli ran.
