The best analogy I can give you is from my service days.

I think Quinn should play an Officer role and oversee the Scheme and Game plan vision but I hope they let/hire Positional coaches (Enlisted role) whom can teach and rely the scheme and overall vision.

I have nothing against Quinn in fact he’s a great signing, but sadly, just in my opinion Quinn is a retread.....everyone has tape. Romo probably call every PLAY....on gameday

Cowboys are the most valuable and visible Sports Franchise. We can’t do better or think out the box per say...

Unfortunately for you, the DC gets the blame when defenses fail and so they aren't going to rely on just position coaches to teach HIS schemes. Please tell me with verifiable proof all the DC that just sit back and don't actually do any coaching. Your retread thinking is bunk. The saints who had the 2nd ranked defense this season has former head coach of the raiders Dennis Allen and there are 5 other teams that have former head coaches as DC's, including 4 of those that made it to the playoffs this year.

Gus Bradley built that Seattle defense. He did such a good job, he got the Jaguars HC job in 2013. The year Quinn took over a stockpile of young talent on defense that was so deep and talented. They had so much talent up front, they could constantly rotate guys all game to stay fresh and get after the QB.

Switzer took over an extremely talented team in place and had zero work to do. Just keep the car on the road with the cruise control on. And he did just that. Won a ring. So did Quinn.

When Quinn went to Atlanta, his defenses were trash. And yes, he had a big part of those defenses. It was the same as when Garrett was the HC but he was still responsible for the offense. The gameplan and playcalling. Quinn was in charge of those defenses that were really bad. Quinn is also responsible for turning the Falcons into a running meme of how many historic leads they have blown. The Super Bowl is obviously the biggest but they have so many more. Cowboys fans here will be well aware of one of them this season.

I don't think one person on our defense this year could even start for his Seattle defense and many probably could not even make the 2 deep.

Spare me he was the DC at Seattle 7 years ago. Marinelli was apart of great defenses and got a ring. And we saw how he worked out.

Another recycled, retread head coach hire.
Dallas is a country club.. What do you expect?

The recycling of coaches in the NFL is disgusting.. They hate letting outsiders in.
Kris Richard should have been kept by the Cowboys as DC. That big blue M&M should have stayed in his basement in Green Bay with his worthless hiring of Mike Nolan as DC.

The Cowboys are a country club team. The worst kind of country club that only let coaches like Garrett, Kellen Moore, and now maybe Sean Lee gets that country club coaching treatment. Coaches like Kris Richard are not admitted to the Country Club.

Under Kris Richard, the Cowboys were 11-5 and 8-8 and he performed this while under constant attack by the "Grumpy Old Men" being Rob Marinelli and Jerry Jones. Gus Bradley and Dan Quinn did not turn around the Seahawks defense. Until the arrival of Pete Carroll, and Ken Norton Jr. with Kris Richards, who is a Dennis Thurman disciple, the Seahawks defense was below average coming off a 5-11 season. From 2010-2014 were the Legion of Boom glory days. After 2014 most of that legion of boom talent he developed was leaving (free agency/age), Kris Richards as defensive coordinator continued the defense with lest talent never to have a losing season and 2 playoff appearances in his three years as coordinator. Since he became a full time position coach and coordinator, 2012 to present, he has never had defense give a team a losing record.

Dan Quinn under Jerry Jones will not hire him (he sure will not come back to the same position). So I am hoping Robert Selah gets a HC job to give Kris Richard the opportunity he deserves as a defensive coordinator and eventual HC in the NFL.

I’d modify this to say Gus didn’t really build it, more likely had way more say than Dan Quinn who had gone to Florida in 2011-2012, while key players were being drafted. Plus, Quinn was DL coach when Sherman and Earl Thomas were drafted in 2010. Pete Carroll has control over personnel decisions.

The Legion of Boom is a generational defense that completely shut down the Broncos record-setting with ease. At the same time, their DBs were tall and lanky and physical, and would probably not be allowed to get away with their aggressive style in this era. This point about the LOB completely locking down these offense in the modern era also demonstrate that the modern offenses are really just a product of new rules favoring offense.

Imagine playing pre-1978 when defenders were allowed to make contact after five yards?

You are totally correct. Another retread bringing nothing new to the DC role. He will be gone in year 2 of his 3 year contract.

Each year Switzer was the coach the Dallas Cowboys got worse and worse, to the point they flat out quit on him in'97. Switzer was a good college coach but nothing in the NFL. Aikman, Irvin, Emmitt, Woodson, Haley, Lett, Tolbert, Larry Brown, Deion Sanders, Erik Williams, Nate Newton, Mark Tunie(sp), Lary Allen, all those guys willed us to win super bowl '95 despite Switzer's "coaching".

Well, modern FA was introduced which completely drained Dallas of the talent it had.

I think other factors were crucial as well, including the loss of Norv and Jay Novacek’s back injury. You already began to see it affecting the offense on the Steelers SB, when Dallas started having a lot of trouble scoring in the red zone.

The problem with guys like MM is that older coaches are stuck in their ways. Guys like McVay had no trouble letting go of an time great DC in Wade, when he felt it was better for the team. He also adapted the offense this year as well. We should have gone for a guy like McVay, McDermott or Reich, guys who’ve shown ability as position coaches, through innovation and actually improving a team, not inheriting a great team like Quinn did in the Seattle defense.

and many here on this board are optimistic and content with this hire.

Many on this board wanted to make Kris Richard the head coach.
Many on this board believed Dalton was an upgrade over Prescott.
Many on this board thought there was going to be a feeding frenzy for Earl Thomas when Baltimore cut him.

The list goes on...

This is so disgusting and boring...

The Cowboys can't find an up coming DC.

Quinn is an Ace and a great Coach but this recycle and retread is pathetic.

I just hope he stays away from the players and handles scheme stuff and not teaching.
Brilliant, lets just have a DC who has never been introduced to his players. That should work perfectly....

Switzer did what ironically everyone who wants Saint Urban Meyer to do with this team.

I love Barry Switzer. He is a heck of a good football coach.

Pete Carroll built that defense. HE is the reason it stayed so good for so long and remains good most seasons. He's one of the best secondary coaches ever and has a great mind for the game. Gus Bradley owes his success to Carroll.

Seattle's defense has been bad for 5 years now.

Yeah I agree, I think it was a combination of Switzer not being a great coach, really bad drafts and injuries. I compare us to the 49ers of the same era. Dallas and San Fran had the two most talented teams in the league. In 94 they beat us in the NFCCG, one of the worst days of my life. I feel in '94 both teams "peaked" and in '95 both of us were not as good as we were in '94 but they lost to Green Bay in the divisional round in '95 and we won he SB. We had a huge drop off the next five years as far as success goes but the 49ers went on to be competitive with similar retirements and injuries. They had better coaching and better drafts. I think if one of those factors would have been different, coaching, drafts or injuries then I think we would have been competitive longer but having all 3 go against us was too much. And to this day we are still in the same position. Sucks.

I don't think Switzer is a bad person. I would like to see what he could have done on a different franchise that he was able to build from the ground up. Then I would think he was a good NFL coach if he built his own program and won the SB. . But I agree with your point that losing Novacek hurt us, also losing Harper, and Stepnoski on offense hurt us. It was like body blows to a boxer. No one thing knocked us out but the consistent injuries, bad drafting and bad coaching of other players that were not superstars, took it's toll on us and we went down for the count in '97.

Barry S was a great college coach. As an NFL HC? Not so much.

His greatest talent in college was his ability to recruit some of the best players in the country to Norman, OK. He was a great football mind, but by the time he took the job in Dallas in 1994, he was a shell of what he had been as a college head coach. In Dallas he was more of a figure head than an invested HC. I respect him as a great college FB coach. In the NFL, he was a lucky head coach.

Great analysis.

If we had home field, I see us beating the 49ers. Those sloppy conditions killed us with the TOs to start and of course that ignoring by the refs of her blatant PI by Sanders on Irvin cost us the comeback. That would have gone down as our greatest victory.

Also, don’t forget the injury to Kevin Smith, who I believe, didn’t suffer the Achilles tear, would have gone down as HOF CB.

I agree but this past season even with the lack of talent up front there was no excuse for giving up historical poor play especially in the run defense. To give up 280 rushing in 1 game and then over 300 in another is beyond pathetic. Hell teams did not have to put the ball in the air that often given their ability to run pretty much at will vs the defense. I dida not expect 85 Bears entering into the season but sure as hell did not expect record breaking poor play
A bad coach dies even worse
Nolan is a bad coach
Quinn is not a bad coach
When he’s had talent he’s had good defenses and when he was a DC
Some guys aren’t HC material and he’s not
But he’s a good DC
Is he the best, probably not
Probably not the best available but if you give him players he has shown he can have a good defense

I agree. Quinn has been apart of 3 SB, 2 as DC and 1 as HC. I think Quinn is a good DC but all coaches need talent.

1st two picks of 2015: Defense, 4 out of 7 picks on defense

1st two picks of 2016 Defense, 3 out of 6 picks on defense

1st two picks of 2017 Defense, 3 out of 6 picks on defense

2 and 3 pick of 2018 Defense, 3 out of 6 picks on defense

2 and 3 pick of 2019 Defense, 3 out of 6 picks on defense

4 of 6 picks of 2020 on defense, including 1 and 2

Basically, their drafts targeted defense, irrespective of ‘salary cap’ numbers. Plus, Quinn looks like he drafted way too many LBs. They also drafted plenty of CBs, and they still continued to suck in the secondary. I think within the mix, 2 safeties, the point being Quinn didn’t contribute to drafting any Legion of Boom in his time as HC of the Falcons. Those salary cap numbers are probably skewed overall, because guys like Julio Jones signed a 22 million dollar a year three year contract a couple years back.
