Let's suppose you kept EVERY player we currently have on the defense BUT added a sure fire top five 1 Tech/NT to the current defense. What do you think the impact of it would be on the defense, with the new coaching hire?

I think that a dominant 1 tech would have a vast amount of impact on this defense. I think with that addition, we would have a top 10 DL. We have the ends and an up and comer in Gallimore. Our run defense would be vastly improved. It would keep our linebackers clean.

I think we instantly move somewhere in the 15-20 range, with that one change.

If you add a very good safety to that equation, then its suddenly a 10-15 defense. That's how poorly we have played, and I think coaching is a part of that.

What is hard to quantify in a team game is how one really bad player can affect the operation of that unit. Bad coaching also matters.

The effect of that is exponential when you figure out that a "stop" instead of long drive keeps players fresher, and takes the sync away from and offense. The effect good or bad is magnified.

You put Donaldson on this defense he makes a big impact, getting pressure right up the gut and in the QB face without having to blitz can create a lot of trouble for opposing offense. I don't buy into the notion Dallas has to replace 6 to 7 players on the defense to be good. You get players who are impact players it can have a big effect on the entire defense.

This is where I am going to differ with you. Our run defense INSIDE is what is killing us. If we fix that, this defense is going to be vastly improved.

Nope.

"keep linebackers clean" doesn't matter when your linebackers are never in the right gap, and the idea of this giant 1T who commands double teams doesn't really exist in today's NFL anyway. If they can't penetrate, they don't matter.

Both of these guys are 3T and can penetrate.

Donald leads the league in sacks almost every season.

Huge. Right now, I don't believe we have a starting NT/1tech that fits this scheme. That guy is pretty critical to making the entire defense work. That would be a very valuable piece if we had that.

But I'm curious, when you say top 5, are you saying spend a top 5 pick on one or one of the top 5 in the NFL right now?

I would not spend a top 5 pick on one but I'd love to have a guy who is top 5 at the position.

This is true but he is moved around to take advantage of vulnerabilities. He is not moves around for position flex, which is what is being discussed here. I.E., he isn't moved from a penetrating difference maker to a guy who is schemed to simply eat blocks. Kind of a different thing all the way around.

I know, so does Cox. But neither of them is ever used as a 1T/NT like the OP is suggesting, and no 1T/NT has the skillset to have that same versatility. They are penetrating, quick players. The OP is talking about space eaters.
