Hard to keep Brown off of any top 5 list. Maybe he was a product of an era that had smaller dlinemen and lbs than him, but there hasn't been a player that has dominated their era more.

"dominated their era"
I believe in normalizing for era while comparing the greats. Compare players versus their contemporaries. The game has changed. Medicine has changed. Training has changed.
Brown played while we still had leaded gas.

As Nate Newton would say, "I was just a fat guy until Emmitt Smith showed up."

Sander's OL in Detroit had a couple pro bowlers on it when he showed up (Lomas Brown & Kevin Glover).

Growing up in Florida I got to watch Emmitt play for the Gators. The Gators back then were average to poor. Emmitt was clearly talented with scrubs around him.

While Dallas had a great OL, Emmitt was the catalyst for the entire team. He elevated the triplets. Give me 22 over Barry any Sunday, Thursday, and occasional Saturday.

Even to this day, Emmitt still doesn't get the credit he deserves as the all time leading rusher. Non-cowboys fans feel he simply had the best OL with All Pros down the lineup. Which is true, but you play the hand you're dealt. He actually elevated their play as well and turned them into All Pros. And they weren't highly drafted players either. His record will stand the test of time.

It is still crazy to me that no one will ever break Emmitt's record because the NFL has changed so much.
I will say this and get destroyed but if it is only one game and I needed one of the two I am taking Barry, behind a great line, and the most spectacular RB or even player I watched.

If you wanted the guy for a franchise many years then of course Emmitt. All time you kinda have to give it to Emmitt, but best I saw at any one given time was Barry.

I agree...Barry averaged 5.0 yards per carry over his entire career. no one does that.

Speaking of O-line, only 2 of Emmitt's linemen from Florida got drafted, but only one of them made it, and that was David Williams. He played 9 years with the Oilers and Jets. The other guy was Bob Sims, who was drafted by the Saints in 1988 but didn't make the team.

Let's also not forget that Emmitt is the only running back IN THE HISTORY OF FOOTBALL to be his state's all-time leading rusher in high school, his school's all-time leading rusher in college, and the NFL's all-time leading rusher.

To me Emmitt was the perfect RB. He did everything at a high level. Barry Sanders, although one could argue he was a better runner, he had flaws. He was for the most part a runner. He didn't catch out of the backfield to the extent Emmitt did, and he was taken out in goal lie situations. To me that's a liability. That's why I put Emmitt above him. And probably because I'm a Cowboys fan.

Barry Sanders was on the K&C Masterpiece show this past Tuesday and talked about some similarities and differences with Emmitt Smith. They even introduced Barry as the "greatest running back of all-time". Here are the quotes from Barry that stood out to me:

"“We were different in that I probably could have used a few more Nate Newtons in front of me, or [Mark Stepnoski]. You know, or Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin. But, no — I think we’re both kind of shifty in our own way."

"Emmitt was probably a little more patient as a runner. It’s funny because I was hearing about Emmitt Smith when I was in high school. He was highly touted, one of the nation’s top players. So, it was just cool for me to end up being his nemesis, or adversary, or thought of as the top running back in the league along with him. But I think there are a lot of (similarities between us), being that kind of slippery, elusive guy, that can hit a home run from anywhere on the field.”

Here's a link to the article(s) these quotes came from:

Classic misinformation/half-truth from you.

Neither one of those guys made the Pro Bowl until Sanders came onboard.

Jim Brown was the GOAT.
I have three autographed footballs. One Emmitt, one Jim Brown and a Dorsett. Unfortunately, the Dorsett one was on a practice used football and I didn't take care of it in my youth. You can barely see the autograph and wouldn't recognize it, unless you knew it was his.

Emit was very elusive, never or do not recall ever seeing him blown up.

Emmitt was perfect for the Cowboys in the 90’s. His ability to get positive yards and put games away just ground down our opponents

if Barry had been here instead, we still win those Super Bowls and his career would probably have been longer and his profile would have been even more elevated than it is. He would have provided more trouble for opponents than Emmitt imo.

Hate to say it but give me Sanders

Emmitt was the smarter of the two. He knew when and how to cut losses. He got the hard yard. He was never taken off the field in a goalline situation for fear of losing yardage. I Take nothing from Barry who was spectacular in his own right but I'd take 22 over him everytime.

My goodness ........speak for yourself ( lol) and did I hear you right, Emmitt was also smarter than Barry? Don't make me go leopards and stipes on you :lmao2:
