When you grossly overpay for past production your team building suffers. Doesn't matter if its RB, QB, or kicker. Stop overpaying when you can aquire similar talent at much cheaper rates.

Really? Mahomes and Russ are the only QBs to win on a rookie contract in the last 15 years.. Maybe Flacco? Am I missing anyone? The fact of the matter is in order to win you need to be good at all levels on both sides of the ball and you can't suck at special teams. This nonsense of highlighting one position or another is a fool's errand. Build a good team.. Period. The rest will take care of itself. The Cowboys failings have mainly been because they have glaringly refused to invest in the secondary and interior defensive line. As such they have been weak up the middle against good running teams and unable to match up with good passing teams.

There are three levels on the defensive side of the ball d-line, LB and secondary. The Cowboys defense sucks at all three. There are four levels on offense.. Line, receivers, backs and QB.. Once Dak, Tyron, Zack and Collins went out the Cowboys sucked at 2 of the 4. If we want to win we need to get down to only sucking at one level on each side of the ball. And maybe stop with the dumbarse 4th down punt fakes deep in your own end. Coaching was a net minus for the Cowboys this year too. So you can dump Dak,draft a rookie QB, draft o-line, sign FA studs on the d-kline and still suck in those other areas. Even if you hit on all the draft picks and FA signings you still have the remaining holes.

Our ONLY hope for any kind of success in 2021 is Dak, Tyron, Collins to all get healthy, Quinn to fix at least two of the units on defense and Fassel has learned his lesson with the stupid fake punts. Otherwise this team will look much the same as it did early last year.. Scoring a ton but only beating bad teams because it cannot stop a good offense to save its life. I have no interest in "formulas." My formula is be better than the guy in front of you at as many positions as possible.

Stop with the common misconception that having just the right QB or RB is going to give you super bowl success.

You got it, if it was only 1 position that determined the SB winner guys like Rodgers would have more than just 1 ring.

Obviously 2013 is slightly disingenuous because Harvin just happened to have a good super bowl despite Lynch being a big part of that offense...but even Lynch didn’t have a crazy contract.

QBs who were paid among top 5 that year or

top 10 WRs who won SB in last 10 years or

WR duo picked in Rd 1 that won a SB in last 10 years

Don't know.. But I guarantee you Eli wasn't making peanuts when he won and neither was Peyton. We know you need to manage the cap properly to build a good enough team to win a Super Bowl. That's not the argument. The notion that you gotta have one making bottom 5 money (rookie contract) is. And if I'm not mistaken even when Flacco won it was on his 5th year option year. So while he may have technically been on his rookie deal he was no bargain that year either if I recall correctly. By the way.. in case you are new to the United States.. the Cowboys had a QB on a rookie contract for 4 years and have 1 playoff win to show for it. Maybe the problem isn't how much you pay the QB but the team you build around him.. Just a thought.

Who cares about value? zeke has carried this team to exactly nowhere and he has those cool little worthless rushing titles his fans can brag about.

Some of you need to realize what’s best for this team and keep things in perspective. Paying top dollar for an over glorified RB is what really matters, it’s been proven time and time again. We could have never made it this far without her.

Brady made 25 million this year.. about 20 million more than Mahomes did.. Seems like having the lower paid QB was not the magic bullet for KC.

None of them were on big contracts when they won the Super Bowl.

Once they got hugely paid, the roster talent lessened, and they haven't been able to do it again.

Kansas City's roster is about to erode slowly. They 've had their 3 years of about a 4-year window. Next year might be it for them with a roster like this.

I didn't say they were on big contracts when they won, I said some of them still played on contending, highly competitive teams, and that Brady winning so many limits the opportunity for others.

It's a bit off base to say a team that was in the Super Bowl this past season, and another team that went 13-3 and lost a close game in the playoffs to the eventual Super Bowl winner (Green Bay) were rendered ineffective because their QB's got big contracts.

Hell, Rogers last won the Super Bowl in 2010. Roethlisburger in 2008. Are we blaming 10-12 years of the Packers and Steelers not winning the Super Bowl on the fact their QB's are on a big contract now, or is it maybe that repeating as a Super Bowl winner isn't that easy for any QB not named Brady?

most of those had elite QBs you have to have one or the other..

so EE deal made it impossible to win championships? seriously bad defense, injuries', and turnovers by the offense, some bad coaching play calls and decisions etc etc etc these are the DC failure to make it to the NFCCG..PERIOD

Zekes deal has not hindered the DC one bit..ridiculous..its dak thats not Brady, brees, Rogers, PManning, or wilson.. not even close so paying him what he wants would be worse then zekes deal its 2.5 times what zeke makes so its 2.5 times the cap hit..

BTW what were the highest paid WRS on those staffs? QB salary at the time?

You need to add in the prorated bonuses. Base salary is often irrelevant when examining true cost.

I "don't know" because I don't care. Paying market value for a QB is not the same as "overpaying for him." Overpaying would be 40-45 million a year.. Market value is 35-39 million. It's not rocket surgery. As for his "suddenly lead us to SBs?" The answer is simple.. He has to play better and so do his teammates. The good news is based on 4+ games.. HE has shown that he can play better than he had in the 4 previous years. It's not unusual for QBs to get better as they gain experience in the league.. Dak appears to be no different. He's entering his prime.. He's a better passer and he has a better command of the offense. We should see the best 5-7 years of his career coming up. He deserves market value.. but he also needs to work with the team re: the cap. I believe it can be done. Fine if you don't. We're going to find out in the next few weeks. He'll either sign a long term deal and finish his career a Cowboy or he will be tagged and finish his career elsewhere. Time will tell.

Easier said than done. Did the Cowboys "grossly overpay" Emmitt in 1993? Or Deion in 1995? Based on what happened after they got paid, no. But if they had paid Emmitt and no more SBs resulted, then for sure there would have been howls from many that "they shouldn't have paid Emmitt that money".

It's also not so much the Cowboys overpaying, as waiting too late to do the deal, as in Dak, or too early, as in T. Crawford.

If you don't pay for past production, what do you base the payment on? Potential? Why is there a rookie contract scale? Partly because teams had to pay top draft pick quarterbacks, e.g. ridiculous money based on nothing but college play and a great combine show, then when they were busts the teams suffered for years.

Pay is based, or should be based, on a combination of past performance and anticipated performance, obviously you shouldn't pay a 36 year old running back top dollar for a 4 year deal (extreme example, yes), but why would anyone assume a 25 year old running back with 2 rushing titles under his belt wouldn't continue to be a top running back?

And the whole "you can get similar talent at much cheaper rates" is a fallacy most times, how many Joseph Randles or Troy Hambricks have there been in the league? The "we can replace player x with this low round rookie and he'll do just fine", but how well did Randle and Hambrick do?

Running backs and other players get paid more mostly because they ARE more talented, talented running backs don't, regardless of popular belief, "grow on trees"..

I believe Zeke could muster up 35 to 50 yards rushing in a given Superbowl. Arians, is the perfect coach in this era. He does not care about the status quo, and he has an owner that allows him to be the public lead. The Cowboys, are constructed backwards. The owner, trumps the GM, Coach; and players. Everything is done to his satisfaction, and what his ideology is, of a championship team.
