Give Dak a nonexclusive franchise tag

1000%......I seriously doubt Jerry and Stephen have any intention of letting another team decide how much they should pay their QB.

If the Cowboys did use the nonexclusive tag it would almost guarantee Dak plays on the tag again and then the Cowboys risk losing him for nothing in free agency the following year.

Well, actually somebody said Russell Wilson is like a Dak and I brought this stat of him being the top ranked qB rating in the NFL after the first progression as a refutation of this claim that Dak is ‘close’ to Russell Wilson who doesn’t have anywhere near a stacked roster like Dak has had his whole career as not being true. And then I mentioned that Dak is pretty much right where Goff is in terms of drop-off in QB rating from first to second progression, so again, that’s not other QBs stats without taking into account Dak’s. It’s no surprise both Goff and Dak throw more play action than any other QBs in the league year in and out and Linehan and Moore basically almost completely eliminated the traditional drop back for Dak, because he sucks at it.

No one that believes Dak is a top 10 QB will agree with you on this. They are of the belief that the team is close to the contenders with a few moves. In reality, the defense basically needs a complete overhaul and the offense may need 2 new tackles and maybe a center due to health concerns. This team is at least 3 years from serious contention (and that with excellent team building and good contact signings).

This team nucleus should be blown sky high and started over again. Though if they sign Dak to a long-term deal, you can probably bank on 2 of 4 division titles in the next 4 years (which I can see gets many on here hot and bothered). They would much rather mediocrity than real garbage results.

Think about it, how many teams give their QB a long term deal if they're not going to be in serious contention for at least 3 years? I can think of one, Houston, and look at that organization. Detroit? That's another one and look at their history. Dallas would fit right in.

All of you that seem to think the non-exclusive tag would cure everything are only fooling yourselves. Here's what people that actually understand everything see. The Cowboys made an offer and Prescott or France rejected it and repeated his offer of 40 mil a year. The Cowboys tweaked their offer a little and France again rejected it and repeated his original offer. So then the Cowboys as you think should have put the non-exclusive tag on him and the minute the do that, Prescott like any other player that has had the non-exclusive tag applied know that their team is actually trying to trade the player for two #1 draft choices. The other thing that happens is the other GM's that may be interested in signing Prescott knows that a couple of offers have been rejected and that France just made the same demand as he did originally so those GM's know that if they want Prescott they'll have to offer pretty darn close to what France's demands are. So what then happened, by applying the non-exclusive tag the Cowboys just opened up the negotiations into a bidding war with the rest of the league. VERY DUMB! That would have made it so the Cowboys now have to worry about other teams for the QB they believe is their franchise QB for now and the future where they don't have to worry about any other teams with the exclusive tag. What you're calling a mechanism to call France's bluff is nothing more than a mechanism to trade Prescott. Leave the GM duties to those that actually get paid to do it and actually understand how to do it.

The market is $40. If, say, Chicago came in and said "we'll go to $45," that's now the price. The reason you don't do non-exclusive is because it forfeits all of your control. It's the same as not letting a guy get to UFA before signing him.

That’s possible. It’s is also possible that Dak would not get as many offers as people think. Keep in mind that teams not only have to pay Dak, they also have to give up 2 first round picks to do it.

I’m not saying you aren’t correct in your assessment. It might be spot on. In fact I lean towards agreeing with your assessment.

But wouldn’t it be something if it drove Dak’s contract price DOWN? I mean...think about it...Dallas should be willing to pay him more than anyone else..because they do NOT have to also give up two first round picks to sign him.

That’s a LOT of assets tied up in one player. Maybe Dak is worthy of such an investment by another team. We gave up a first and signed Amari Cooper, so the compensation is not other worldly in terms of draft pick compensation.

But how many teams would be willing to give up two firsts? Most of the teams who would be willing to do that pick low enough that they don’t need a QB—they already have one.

A team like the Jags would be giving up two high picks. But they can get Sunshine for one pick at a low cost. So why do it?

You would have to watch out for a team like the Commanders. They might do it for multiple reasons. Of course it just takes one.
