This isn't about Prescott, it is about the team. It's not about establishing his worth. Or any QB's worth.

Do you think the Cowboys would be a championship caliber team with Mahomes or Watson? The two 40M QB's. Think Rodgers or Wilson at 35m and 33M would do it?

TB did what they did with a 25M QB considered the GOAT. KC got there with their QB still on his rookie deal. BAL and BUF got their with QB's on their rookie deals.

When NE was winning all those trophies, what were they paying their QB and why was that? Kraft even said Brady really has no choice meaning if he wanted to stay in NE and keep gathering jewelry, he had to be cooperative on the salary. Because Kraft as the owner understood Belichick the HC was all about the team.

The most successful HC in NFL history would not pay any QB 40M. He had the best and was willing to trade him if he didn't fit in the cap formula. He actually planned on doing that. There's a lesson to be learned there.

It doesn't matter what QB the Cowboys have, they cannot pay him that much of the cap because they are challenged in deciding what to pay other players. They are average team builders at best.

Because of how they distribute the cap, they have to be dead on in the draft, particularly on the D side. Are they? Are they even good in FA with the D? Paying any QB 40M only exacerbates what is already the problem along with being challenged with player evaluations.

The Dallas Cowboys are the prime example of what happens with a team paying too much to too many, it is feast and famine on the same team. And they will all stay hungry.

In the short run, the best thing they can do is get a rookie QB, keep Dalton and focus on the rest of the team. If they don't, the long run doesn't matter.

Not with Jerry running things. Other teams understand the need to build a team around the key pieces like the QB. Jerry has failed to understand this concept for over 25 years. If Jerry gives in yet again and hands out a 40+ million contract, he again won't be able to build a team around this person and the team will remain mediocre. Relevant and interesting, but no where near championship caliber.

They need to figure out how to get the Jets pick so they can take Zach Wilson.

Except for the Dak worshippers you are pretty much preaching to the choir. I know some here think a Brady waves his magic wand and suddenly a team wins a SB. He got another ring because like all the others he got he had a excellent coach and a real team around him. A TOP D by the way. Now as last year proved you do not need a TOP D to win a SB but the odds of winning it are a lot higher. You can get by with a D that plays lights out when it matters; the Saints and Colts each won one like that. Now Mahoones won a Ring last year because he made plays when it really mattered and the other QB did not; and that was more on him then the Chiefs D.
So THERE is where a TOP QB makes the difference.

I ask all those on the band wagon of having a great QB at all costs thing about those costs. We started to see this year the problems that KC is starting to have because so much of their cap space is tied up in what more than a few think is the best QB in the NFL; certainly the best YOUNG QB in the NFL.

I think the most sure way to get to and win a SB is to have a very good QB and a very good team OVERALL. Offense, Defense, Special Teams and a VERY GOOD COACH.

NOW let us address the Boys situation.

Do we have a very good coach? Hard to say one way or another right now. But leave that aside.

Dak wants to be paid and that is understandable. By the way those praising Brady might want to remember he was married to a woman that made 10 TIMES AS MUCH AS HE DID EACH YEAR.

BUT paying DAK especially now with the cap situation very questionable for the next couple of years - in the brutal reality of the current situation that is a very shaky bet.

Now as regards a player wanting every penny. What difference is there between getting 35 million a year and 40 million a year? REALLY?
HERE is where its all about EGO and so on. Because it to does not materially affect anything for that person. That person is going to get enough money to be set for the rest of HIS life and his families life.
THAT is where someone can realistically question his motives and claims to want to win a chamipionship.
I will now cite Drew Brees as someone who is what DAK appears to want to emulate. Here is a GREAT QB who TOOK EVERY PENNY HE COULD GET.
And he only has ONE RING. And that years ago. I think an excellent case can be made that he did not get a second ring because a good part of that reason was the amount of cap space he took.

and cap space this year and next year at least is going to be very shaky.

I think DAK is an excellent QB just below elite status. You can certainly win a SB with Dak. IF HE HAS THE FULL TEAM AROUND HIM.

I do not believe that the Boys can build a SB winning team paying DAK what he wants.

Because our D sucks and we need all our draft picks and some more than dumpster diving FA's to fix it. We will not have the money to get any real FA's if we pay DAK what he wants.

If we pay DAK we are sentencing the Boys to be 8-8 or so once again.

You will never win a SB without a D playing like a top 10 D when it matters. and that means you have to have the TALENT of a top 10 D and right now we are WAY short of that.

The Pats won a bunch of SB and were in the hunt every year because of several factors: Brady, Bellicek and not to mention a VERY WEAK division.
WE do not have that luxury. Our Division is historically a lot tougher than the AFC East.

So in conclusion while I would love to keep DAK we cannot afford him at this time.

Can they afford to pay a guy 40M this year? No.
Can they afford to have a 40M AAV QB? Yes.

And in fact virtually every team with a non-rookie franchise QB have a 40M AAV QB in 3 years.
That's how fast these things move.

And that 40M AAV will cost high 20s to low 30s the first season or two then jump.

The Cowboys paid Tony Romo 27.3M in 2015 on a 143M Cap.
That's a little over 19% of the cap.
wWth a 185M cap that would equal 35.5M
With a 220M cap that is 42M (the assumed number forecast for this year pre-pandemic)

So yes all teams and including your Dallas Cowboys can handle a 40M AAV QB.

BTW, this NEVER changes. You find and then keep your QB and you draft well.
That's how you win.

KC will be in the convo every year Mahomes is healthy.
Same way GB and NO has been for the majority of their QBs healthy careers.

You won't always win it all but a quality QB is the starting point and basically ensures franchise remains profitable.

Can we afford a rookie QB that doesn't pan out (and what are the odds of that?) while we build a stellar D, which is also no guarantee to be accomplished? In much less sentences, this is basically about having a known quantity (that will cost you) vs. a big unknown with bad odds. People slam Jerry & Son for taking risks on signing guys early that don't pan out but want to trust them on a bargain-hunting risk with the most important position on the field. Good luck with that. Maybe our new target will be 2 times the player our last target Paxton Lynch was and actually be 3rd string worthy.

This is the old way of thinking and unfortunately the guys running the show will think like this too.

No matter how many QBs are screwing up their teams with their inflated deals you just gotta do it dont you....

Yes.. Dallas isn’t going to be a winning team anytime soon.

The division being awful is the 1 thing going in our favor but Dallas is a team trending down.

We got WRs though!

The best thing that could ever happen to the Cowboys short of new ownership would be to have to pay a QB 40 million a year because his play warrants it.

We don't have that player.

Yes, another way of saying it is paying Dak $40 million does not make him a $40 million QB. It's like saying we drafted a guy in the 1st round so he must be good enough to be a first rounder. Results are all that matter.

Can any team afford to have a big question mark at QB? I think the problem really is the QB salary vs the cap. I think the player’s union has to step in here to protect the interest of all players.

Lol imagine actually thinking that.

Yeah.. He wasn’t worth it at all was he? Lollll

What in the world are you talking about? When did I say he wasn't worth it? I said he had the 4th highest cap hit in the nfl..and they won the super bowl..you and many others claim teams can't win paying qbs, just like this post above basically claims, it's dumb and it's wrong.

If we won't be winning anytime soon then what difference does it make what route we take to mediocrity? We'd probably have been in the playoffs with Dak this year so at least we would have been mildly competitive. By the time Dak's 4-5 year contract is up we'll have built that stellar D, right? Or do you want to draft a QB every year with our first rounder and hope we hit on one of them roulette-style?

He’s an elite QB.. We don’t discuss QBs like Dak with QBs like Brady. Brady is a difference maker.

I want to get rid of Dak and build the entire roster and yes I’m willing to draft new QBs all the time in this QB market.

Dak is proof that even a 4th round QB like him can have success if the foundation is solid.

He was at his best when Zeke and he OL were rolling.. The more we ask of Dak the more average we get as a team.
