wouldn't mind smith as a QB2.
not crazy about him as QB1.
i like trask...i also like stanfords davis mills and smu's shane buechele.
i'd sign vet QB tyrod taylor...let him start til mills or trask or buechele is ready.
if they out perform the vet in camp...then you go with the rook.
but if this thing with Dak goes side-ways...i think you might be on to something with signing a vet QB til the rookie is ready.

I agree with you. I like Mac Jones. He has something about him but yes we need to improve the defense whether through the draft or free agency.

Exactly, so we would need to go defence, imo, at 10 if we're not able to get Jones. If we go that route, then we'd need to try to at least keep Dak for one more year with the understanding that we'll be drafting a QB next year, or trade Dak, if able to (and Chicago might be one such team that'd make that deal) to obtain ammunition for a possible trade. I would also, again, put Gallup on the trade block. IF we can get a first or more, I'd move him. IF NOT, I'd hold on to him. I'd at least test the market with him. See if we can get another 1 which would allow us the ability to get a QB at 10 (or move up further), and still defence in round 1 as well. I'd then use the later of our 3rd round picks on WR.

I like Buechele. Buechele is a good 6th round option for us. I'm not crazy about Alex Smith as the QB1 either, tbh, but, for one season or even a half season while we get Trask, Mills, Buechele, or Ramsey ready. Smith at least gives us the ability to not have our hand forced at QB in the draft. We can sit back, stick to our board, and know that we can take a QB in round 3 or later knowing that we'd have a veteran to help him develop. We've had success with this method. In fact, I'd argue Romo being the QB2 when Dak took over helped Dak develop. Even if the plan is to have Smith as the QB2, he'd be an invaluable resource for the rookie to learn from. Nothing like having a vet like Smith to talk over what you saw.

If our O-line doesn't return to form, Smith would just quit and retire mid-game.

I could see that, and, if we get someone like Mac Jones, then Smith would serve as a veteran QB2 that Mac could talk to, as well as the coach, about what he saw.

I'd take Surtain or Farley over Pitts. I think we're fine at TE and we're in great shape at WR. We're good on weapons imo. QB and oline would be the only spots where offense makes sense imo at 10. I'd really prefer a trade down anyway.
you dont take good prospects over elite ones.

Alex Smith is done. Dude can’t play anymore. He simply can’t move around well enough.

It’s insane to think of him as any kind of option.
People get caught up by the way he lit up our defense but if you watched him play the rest of the season you would see he was horrible and needs to retire. Dak will be our quarterback no matter what next season anyway.

Normally, I agree, but we already have insane firepower at WR and good talent at TE. I guess we could take Pitts, but man, how much longer must we neglect defence? I mean, at this point, we're going to have to put up 50 points per game with this defence. I guess if we're not keeping Dak, it'd open up FA to sign a big LB in FA, but then the defencive pickings in FA for run stopping aren't great either.

I seriously want Dak as the QB. I seriously do. If we do, then the smart move is draft Buechele in round 5 or 6, and use at least the vast majority of our high picks on defence.

I will take Alex Smith as a back up. Needs one more touchdown I have 200 in his career

I could take Alex Smith as QB2. In fact, whether we keep Dak or not, I'd have Alex Smith. Smith would be a nice backup behind Dak, and, if we lose Dak, then he could help whoever we take at QB either as the starter or as the backup and mentoring the rookie from the sidelines.

Mods, feel free to move if needed.

I know that this is yet another QB thread, but here's an angle I'm thinking. I would LOVE to keep Dak if we can. However, if he leaves, then we, of course, need a new QB. I personally suspect that he goes to Chicago. But that's for another thread. This thread is talking about an idea I had if we do have to let Dak go. That is what we shall get into now.

So, I saw a thread earlier stating that Alex Smith is expected to be let go from the WFT. My plan would be to essentially sign Alex Smith as sort of a reboot of Drew Bledsoe. If you recall, we had Drew Bledsoe after Vinny Watchthebirdie to help Romo develop until Romo took over. I'd essentially reboot that with Alex Smith with hopefully better decision making with players along the way. This would mean that we could keep 10 for drafting defence, which we desperately need, while also drafting Kyle Trask in round 3 (as we should have 2 3rd round picks). Full disclosure, I wasn't high on Kyle Trask beforehand, but I do think, with development, he can become a solid starter for us. Alex Smith would allow us a year with a veteran QB to develop Trask into what we need him to become for us. Funny enough, Trask kinda reminds me of Romo a bit with the way he throws (but he is taller than Romo).

Here's a video on Trask:

Thoughts?

I appreciate the effort but I'm not crazy about Smith or Trask.

I remember early in the college football season somewhere here was touting Trask as a top ten pick. :muttley:

NFL Zone material

I normally would, but it's not like anyone's really follows that. Plus, this is about an idea of possibly having him join our team, so I figured it still counts as Fan Zone anyway.

Oh, I don't think Trask is a top 10 pick either. In fact, I even said in the OP that I was not high on him and I still am not. I think with the right development, he can become a solid QB. As for Smith, he and Fitz would solely be here to help a rookie QB develop or, if we keep Dak, as the QB2.

Anyone but the Nuch..... I heard he has ties with MM brother. The guy needs to be cut immediately and MM should never be aloud to give influence to drafting a quarterback again.

I hear ya on that. I think Buechele or Trusk would be better options anyway.
