I have a what if question about the defense

Taking the temperature here. What if we sign Neal for WLB and Kazee and then draft Surtain at 10 but don't really add another defensive player that figures to be a big factor this year.

What's your opinion on that defense in 2021 under Dan Quinn?
Could live with that scenario

The name of the game is still TO’s. We were on a record pace early last season for the least amount. The second half they dumbed down the Defense and started Wilson and we led the league in takeaways.

Our LB’s scare me more than any other position.

If they did that and added a couple more pieces in the draft (simply competent depth/rotation pieces) then I’d be optimistic.

I hope Surtain is still there at 10. I’ve been sold on him as the best case pick for a while now (our of likely scenarios at least).

fans saying the guys we signed are jags are not competent before they see them play is just par for the course.

they added Urban(3rd rated run defender at DT), Watkins, Basham(upside easy be very good rotational pass rusher) added to healthy woods, Hill, Gallimore in the middle rotation and Dlaw, RG for 14/17 if possible, and getting Anae and the other backups plus few draft picks sprinkled in and Quinn cooking the meal arent going to be compeptint..id say its possible to move from, 30-32 to 16 with this roster so far and more changes coming..

im going to also keep reminding fans how the offensive turnovers, scoring droughts, ST gaffs on fakes and some poor high risk failed play calls ut an already bad defense on short fields and playing from behind, it wasn't ALL defense that caused the issues..last season was a total team failure mostly due too injurys and a few other things added in..

i can see a vastly improved just getting a redo, a mulligan of sorts..

Awesome consensus...the middle of the defense has to be fixed. NT, MLB n S are necessary to turn this thing around.

I hope I'm missing something here, but if we combine the 2019/2020 Falcons defensive backfield with the 2020 Dallas defense plus a new corner then I am probably going to brace myself for when the whoopins commence.

Looking back at least season, I will say this. The defense did appear to get better towards the end of the season. Maybe it was who they were playing. Maybe it was that they started to get Nolan's scheme. Or maybe Nolan made some adjustments, but the stats don't lie. They started getting more turnovers and gave up fewer points. I am not saying they were a good defense. They were still terrible, but they were better than earlier in the year.

Making the assumptions they pick up Neal and Kazee, but no other FAs and they draft Surtain, I think the defense will be better in some ways. But I don't see the pass rush getting any better unless they can find a way to generate more pressure up the middle. Maybe with Diggs and Surtain, Quinn will be willing to take some chances with the blitzes to get pressure. Then they need to get better protecting the edges. Maybe Urban will help there but our $21 million DE has a nasty habit of crashing inside and letting RBs and mobile QBs cut outside on him. They have to fix that as well. The biggest improvement on the defense will be getting Xavier Woods off the field. I swear he was involved in every big play against the Cowboys defense last year. Other than that, I don't see any other personnel improvements. We'll see how good Quinn is at coaching defense.

To be honest, I might be in the minority here, but I need to see this offense do something against the better defenses if they want to win the division. The WFT is going to be improved this year and the Cowboys will need to score some points against them, and their improved defense. Dak and his OL have to stay healthy.

Why would it make you mad? There is a long history of punters and kickers going in the first and second round. Hall of famer Ray Guy was drafted 23rd overall by the Raiders. Then again in 2000 the Raiders drafted Kicker Janikowski with the 17th overall pick. There's at least another dozen examples of complete idiocy in the first and second round drafting punters and kickers!

No matter what, in the draft they need to get CB, S, DT, LB within the 1st 5 picks. As they may go with an OL or TE in the mix somewhere.
So if CB is the only pick on defense, that would be the most stupid draft ever when defense is the need no matter how many FA's they sign.

don’t see that happening.

the OL is the priority.

RT is a problem.

Assuming LVE can stay healthy and Jaylon is better utilized in Quinn’s scheme, this defense could be good enough. Not the “enough” - not good, but good enough to certainly win the division with this offense and maybe challenge in the NFC.

I’m not a big fan of Surtain. I’d rather draft Pitts.

Did JErry go out and get himself some mo injured players? IF he did he's an imbecile....

Same here.

Granted, playing behind a poor DL didn't help matters, but the coaches/team also played the LBs far too much.

Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch should not both be on the field on passing downs and it's past time to have a dime set that doesn't have any LBs.

Improving the DL can help, but recognizing Smith and LVE aren't great match-ups in the passing game, especially together, might do more.

Playing less snaps is not a bad thing.

Good. Getting defense in free agency.
Let's us take advantage of drafting offense in a great offensive talent draft.

Does it matter if Dak has to score on every drive?
